Push America

This fall went exceptionally well for our Push America efforts.

We successfully raised $1,500 just this semester without having

empathy dinner. In the spring newsletter we said we had decided to

push the empathy dinner to the spring, and we are continuing with

that. If empathy dinner goes well, we could raise around $4,000 for

Push this year from a total of just two major events.

We’ve been working more and more with the Happiness Bag,

and all of the actives absolutely love it. It’s a wonderful experience

to participate in, and it really makes you appreciate Push America,

what it does, and the people who it works for.

Also, we had three members attend GAP weekend this year,

these members are Jerry Cooper, Shane Sizemore, and Nathan Lee.

“My goals in Pi Kapp are to be

extremely involved in order to

give everything I can to the

brothers.”

One of the ways we sell men

on why they should join a

fraternity is by being "Men of

Class". We have done our best

to make sure we are men of

C.L.A.S.S. and to not fall into

the stereotypical image of "frat

boys" on campus. We’re

always working towards being

gentlemen, and we continue to

pursue excellence in every

aspect of campus life to show

that we Pi Kapps are truly

“Leaders by Choice.”

“In order to be a successful

chapter, bringing in new

members is very important. I

aim to aid the chapter by doing

my best to bring quality men

around for every rush class.”

out of my comfort zone socially.

I’d like to make this chapter by

The theme for Homecoming 2013 was Chicago. We were paired with the ladies of

Delta Gamma and the gentlemen of Theta Chi. Our standings for this pairing didn’t

end up too well for several reasons. I believe the main reason is just simple

participation throughout our pairings and us. Problems arose which allowed us to

only have four Pi Kapps in all of Sycamore Sync, and in the trike race, our trike

broke midway through the race causing us to lose several positions by the end.

However, we’re working toward assuring that we have everybody doing something

because that’s the easiest way to assure you’ll place decently at worst.

We Got a Composite!!!

We decided that as an up and coming chapter that it was time to finally get a

composite picture; something that solidifies the idea that we have a fully functional

chapter with enough members to be able to set aside money for our investment in

the future of our chapter. This was an iconic time for our chapter, and it couldn’t

have been done if it weren’t for the help of all you alumni!

Letter from the Archon

Alumni of Pi Kappa Phi,

Thank you for your continuing support of the Eta Beta chapter here at Indiana State University. I am honored to be serving as the Archon for this year and looking forward to achieving our goals. First let’s take a look back at last semesters accomplishments.

The fall semester started with our two weeks of Rush where we recruited 16

new associates. We had a very successful No Boundaries Week where we raised

$1,100! On Saturday, 15 November, we initiated 11 members of "Nu" class. We

ended the semester with the election of a new executive board with men who are

all extremely excited and motivated to be leading the chapter.

In January, the executive council attended Midyear Leadership Conference

in Baltimore, Maryland. This was a necessary drive as three of us are enlisted in

the Army National Guard and had drill the same weekend as MYLC in St. Louis.

While we were there the Eta Beta chapter received the "Silver Star Award for Push

America" and "Commitment to Continued Growth" awards for our continued

success in Push America programing and recruitment success for 2013. Again this

year, Eta Beta’s own Paralympian, Evan Austin, spoke in front of all the Pi Kappa

Phi’s in attendance at both the Charlotte and the Dallas locations for Midyear. He

spoke of his experience of overcoming obstacles and the courage it took to get him

to the London Olympic Games. This was a great experience for him as well as

opportunity for our chapter to be known nationally throughout the fraternity.

We began the semester with 28 active members. We had several seniors

graduate: Tyler Collins, Brandon Gaston and Jarred Royer. We also have two

actives currently away from the chapter; Nathan Lee is studying abroad in Europe

and William Andrews is attending basic training for the Army. Our chapter is now

made up of primarily freshman and sophomores which puts us in a great position

for the future as they are groomed for leading our chapter to the top on campus.

The big event for the chapter this fall was Homecoming where we were

paired with Theta Chi and Delta Gamma. We had a great introduction social but

suffered from lack of participation and motivation from all sides and did not place

well as a fraternity or pairing. We are looking to correct this behavior and attitude

this semester as we move forward into Spring week with our pairing with Phi Delta

Theta and Alpha Omicron Pi. We have already had our introduction social and was

Page 11: Eta Beta (Indiana State) Fall 2013

a huge hit, which we will use to continue to motivate the chapter to be active in

faithfully upholding the traditions and activities of our college.

This semester we are looking forward to Empathy Dinner, Our First 5K for

Push, and Rose Ball. These events will be held in April:

Empathy Dinner, 4 April at 6:00pm in HMSU, tickets are $25/Plate

Nationwide 5K 3 April HMSU Campus, Time: TBD

Rose Ball, Friday 25 April

We are looking forward to raising awareness and money for Push America this

semester as our primary focus. We hope to continue of the tradition set before us

with always having Pi Alpha's every summer and this summer we have three

actives signed up for Crewing Gear Up Florida; Riley Witvoet, Ben Baumgart and

I. We hope that you can all join us again for Rose Ball again this year to celebrate

our accomplishments of the chapter.

Finally, I would like to address the grades issue we had again last semester

with having the lowest GPA since our re-founding. We had made every attempt

that we knew of last semester to check and verify that our associates were

academically sound. However, we found that to not be effective. Thankfully this

semester Garrett Hamblen has come to our chapter to effectively use our Academic

Program and individualize the plans for each brother and associate. After sitting in

on these meetings and personally heading our academic committee, I know that we

have made the corrections and will not suffer from those poor scores again.

I sincerely hope that you will join us this spring for our exciting Fundraising

events here at Indiana State. I am extremely excited for this semester and

upcoming year as we strive to make our chapter the ideal chapter. I look forward to

meeting you all.

We Will Lead.

Fraternally,

Nathaniel Hyde
