Depending on your pointof view, the 1960's werea time of change, excitement, or of dreadfulupheaval. Maybe a bit of allof these. With interior design, however, the 60's were daysof creativity, imagination andthe willingness to try newthings, with new materials.Modern shapes were pushingagainst traditional ones, andtrying to make space forexpanding ideas in the lookof the home. One of the best things for
people seeking vintagepieces from this decade isthat there is such a widevariety of styles to choosefrom. Traditional, country-home wood furnishings cosyup against groovy chromeand plastic in the pantheonof collectable 1960'sfurniture--each style is aperfect example of the era.Look at any Homes andGardens magazine from thisperiod for reference.
Maple, oak, teak and plywere some of the popularwoods used, and G-Planfurniture in the UK was oneof the style leaders, which iseasily available to collectorsnow and look as good in amodern home as they didwhen they were first made. Then there was the fun stuff.Lots of bright colouredplastic and chrome, withdesigns that were bothminimalist and striking, andusing bold fabrics andmaterials. Chairs thatresembled amoebic shapesand tables that seem to defygravity. Many 1960s itemsfall into the collectablecategory, but what youcollect is more importantoften than who designed the
item, as it still has to be livedwith, once you have broughtit home!During the 60s ideas wereshared freely (or copied
widely) round Europe andAmerica, as the sense of excitement snowballed in theindustry, so common featuresappeared and were watereddown for the mass market. Here are some of thedesigners, whose authenticfurniture is worth looking outfor, though modern copiesare available.Americans, Charles and hiswife Ray Eames who weresynonymous with MidCentury design, producedstylish and functionalfurniture with clean lines, andno extra embellishments.
Danish, Verner Panton, whose designs came in boldbright colours, as well asstark white, mostly made inlight-weight plastics.Italian, Joe Colombo wasanother designer whoworked primarily inplastics. His signature designswere the Universale chairs,
(the first to be moulded usingonly one material) and the allin one Boby trolley.Swedish, Arne Jacobsondesigned the Swan and Eggchairs, which are still aspopular today.Collecting pieces from thisdecade, has become morefashionable over the lasttwenty years, as modernfurniture designers look backto this period of exceptionalcreativity, and bring the spiritof this extraordinary time, into their work. Peoplerealise how wonderful theoriginals were, and that iswhy they have earnedthemselves the title of Modern Antiques

During a recent visit to the beautiful Italian regionof Tuscany, Etcetera magazine has had the chanceto catch up with Boro legend MassimoMaccarone. We met Massimo in a restaurant near the town of Certaldo, amongst the Chianti vineyards and thepicturesque hilltop villages dating back to therenaissance, and had the opportunity to meet his wife
Jessica and beautiful daughter Ginevra, who is now overa year old and full of mischief.Massimo seems to thrive in Tuscany, where after a spellplaying for Siena and scoring overall 40 goals for theclub in serie A, in the last couple of years has beenplaying for Empoli, the Team from which he came fromwhen he joined Middlesbrough. This time he has helpedthe team, that in the 2011-12 season only managed toavoid relegation to serie C, to the serie B play off finallast season scoring 17 goals on the way but missing outon a return to serie A by a single goal, and this year isonce again playing his part to help keeping Empoli at thetop of serie B, and in pole position for a possible return tothe Italian top division.Although his time at Middlesbrough had highs and lowsMassimo has not forgotten the fans at the Riverside, andhas asked Etcetera to bring his best wishes to everyoneon Teesside, where he hopes one day to visit once againto enjoy a good Parmo!Arrivederci Massimo

are conning highly vulnerable peoplePrivate Addict ion ServicesA t l a n t e a n o n
Print deadlines are sometimes so unfair -I need to file this copy whilst waiting forcontact with Daniel Gerrard, a self confessedaddict who has set up a nationwide helplineto help drink and drug addicts throughoutthe country.
Unfortunately its dressed up as a local servicewhen it is nothing of the kind, and has takenmoney from desperate people in the North Eastat prices far higher than would be normal, and forservices which are often free on the NHS. I wouldbe interested in learning what the charitableconcerns working in this sector think, and willbe making contact with the reputable North EastCouncil on Addications, based at Swalwell, to seewhat they have to say. A desperate lady who we shall call Sarahcontacted me after being persuaded to spend2,200 on a home detox course, lasting aweek. She was also quoted a higher figure forcounselling which was later revised upwardsby another addiction helper and after paying3,000 in total for the detox and part of thecost of the counselling, Sarah decided not toproceed with the counselling and asked for her
800 back. She was initially told this could not beprocessed for 14 days, and when this period wasup she made several calls to the company andeach time they had no record of her request for arefund, even though she was speaking to the samepeople and made a note of their names.Sarah became more suspicious of the companywhen she discovered that the North East helplinefreephone 0800 140 4825 was the same numberas used by the South East helpline freephone, also08001404825andso on around the country. Theyeven claimed on their website to have an office inSarahs town. Meanwhile, ads for the companypopulate Google and other search engines if youlook under addiction or alcoholism etc. Sarahis now desperate to recover her 800 which ismoney that she has borrowed, and enlisted myhelp so I took a visit to the address on the websitewhich is given as in Park Road, London N2. Thishappens to be an accountancy practice in EastFinchley, home to a much bigger corporate entitywhich is no stranger to criticism, by the name ofMcDonalds.
I spoke to the people at Accura accountants in EastFinchley and they have given me the mobile phonenumber of Mr. Daniel Gerrard who has asked meto call him just after this magazine goes to press. This addiction helper phone service, run under thename Addiction Treatment Ltd purports to helpaddicts who are often, like Sarah, in considerabledistress when they call. They are persuaded topay more than the market rate for advice andcounselling and considerably more than is chargedby the reputable rehabilitation clinics. I wantto know why these parasitic organisations areallowed to trade, and am considering a referral tothe Care Quality Commission. Meanwhile, Sarah just wants her 800 back after four weeks ofwaiting. Atlantean is always interested to hear fromreaders affected by issues he raises.

pre-existing Roman street plan. The Domesday Book wascompiled in the city late in thereign of William the Conqueror, but did not cover the city itself. The novelist Jane Austen spent herlast few weeks in Winchester anddied in Winchester on 18 July1817 and is buried in thecathedral, fifth window up on thenorth side. Winchester Cathedral, the longest cathedral in Europe, was originally built in 1079. It wasonce an important pilgrimagecentre and housed the shrine of Saint Swithun, who was Bishop inthe 9th century. The ancientPilgrims Way travelling to
Canterbury begins at Winchester. The earliest hammer-beamedbuilding still standing in Englandis also situated in the CathedralClose, next to the Deans garden. It is known as the Pilgrims Hall,as it was part of the hostelry usedto accommodate the many
pilgrims to Saint Swithuns shrine.Left-overs from the lavishbanquets of the Dean would begiven to the pilgrims who werewelcome to spend the night in thehall. The city is well known forthe Great Hall of its castle, whichwas built in the 12th century. TheGreat Hall was rebuilt sometimebetween 1222 and 1235, and stillexists in this form. It is famous forKing Arthurs Round Table, whichhas hung in the hall from at least1463. The table actually datesfrom the 13th century, and as suchis not contemporary to Arthur.Despite this it is still of considerable historical interest
and attracts many tourists. Thetable was originally unpainted, but was painted for King HenryVIII in 1522. Winchester College,a boys public school founded byWilliam of Wykeham, stilloccupies its original buildingsdating from 1382: two courtyards,
gatehouse, cloister, hall and alarge college chapel. The collegeexpanded considerably inVictorian and later times, and nowhas 10 boarding houses inaddition to College for thescholars.I hope I have given an
