Ethics in business workplace is about setting priorities to moral values for

workplace andensuring the alignment of behaviors with corresponding values. Several mythshave thrivedabout practicing business ethics. Some come up from general confusion and others

arise fromnarrow views of ethical dilemmas.

Picking five out of ten myths and giving my notions in terms of rejection, acceptanceor just observation

Myth 1: Business ethics is more a matter of religion than management.I reject this statement for several reasons. First, all religious ethics is not the same

or I canrefer that ethics is not s pecific considering different religion. For example,

Jews are alwaysconcerned about individual welfare in exchange of any activity. Moreover,

fundamentalistsmotivations are misdirected form the original code of ethics of their

religions though theyclaim that they chosen the right way. Secondly, management

can strictly authorize ethical practice in business. So, directions from religious

eth ics are no longer requi red for bus iness ethics. Thirdly, business ethics are not meant to

change peoples belief of their own religions because two of them are different.

Myth 2: Our employees are ethical so wedont need attention to business ethics.

I reject this statement for some reasons. First, all my employees are ethical thisstatementdoes not guarantee that the employees are not doing wrong or will not be

doing wrong. Itmight be emerged when all the emplo yees have moral values in the

    same direc tion. Thisresu l ts a s i tua t ion where nobod y is b lami ng anybod y.Bu t t h i s i s n ot b us ine ss e th i cs . Secondly, ethics is not only the responsibility of

employees, but also a burden of employers, stakeholders and other business users. Unlike the

employees, if the others are not ethical, then business ethics might not work. Thirdly, anyorganization cannot depend on benchmarked hones t empl oyees . Or gan i za t i ons

    s hou l d moni t o r eve r y empl oyee s ac t i ons . Becaus e , honestly is not a permanent

    human nature.

Myth 3: Business ethics is a matter of good guys preaching to the bad guys.I reject this statement for some reasons. First, this is not a universal solution to

resolve anyconflict of interest or confusion in workplace environment unless th e

leaders have goodmorals and their subordinates are following them without hesitations. So,

this theory is onlyapplicable on single situation only. But ethics in business areresponsibilities of all sorts of business users. Secondly, being a good person does

not restrict individuals become bad person especially in a hostile or confused

situation. So, there is always a possibility that agood person takes wrong steps.

Thirdly, ethics is a thing which is not to be taught but to be practiced or be retainedpracticing.

    Myth 4: Ethics cannot be managed.I r e jec t th i s s t a tement though ra re ly e th ics become unmanageab le bu t

mo st ti me it is manageable. If it is enforced or supported by laws, regulation and

rules even democraticcultures which can bind individuals to behave ethically. Agood leadership can enhance the management of ethics.

    Myth 5: Our organization is not in trouble with law, so we are ethical.I r e jec t th i s s t a tement . Not necessa r i ly a f i rm which i s no t f ac ing lawsu i t

o r p rov i d i n g litigations to its claimants is not doing anything unethical. Because everyone is

not supposedto claims its unethical behaviors. There are lot actions which may not be forbidden

    by law. If a manufacturing company is damaging environment but nobod y is hurt forthat, it is stilld o i n g u n e t h i c a l a c t i o n s . M o r e o v e r , w i d o w d r e s s i n g

    f i n an c i a l s t a t e me n t s , de p r i v i n g s tockholders values, compensat ion pol icies

which is poorly aligned with employee tenure, confining critical information to users isunethical behavior. A company might not break lawfor these actions unless specified
