Etihad set for fifth equity stake as Jet confirms talksCodeshare and equity mix fuel Gulf carrier’s global expansion plans

Confirmation last week that Eti-had, the national carrier of Abu Dhabi, is in talks with Jet Airways is widely expected to lead to the Gulf carrier’s purchase of a 24% stake in the troubled Indian budget airline.

If the deal goes through, it will be the first such investment in an Indian carrier since the gov-ernment in Delhi passed a law last year allowing foreign airlines to take minority stakes of up to 49% in domestic airlines.

The move would come as a wel-come boost to Jet, which holds debt of over $600m. Etihad is un-derstood to be prepared to invest between $280m and $330m in the publicly-listed Mumbai-based airline. Jet’s shares rose 4.7% as news of the talks emerged.

Etihad has been expanding its global reach through a series of equity investments and codeshare agreements, and has built up a network serving over 300 destina-tions, closing in on rival Emirates of Dubai, which reaches a similar

The mooted tie-up with Jet will vastly enhance Etihad’s links to the subcontinent. Traffic be-tween Abu Dhabi and India pres-ently stands at 119 flights each week, well below Emirates’ 352 weekly flights.

James Hogan, Etihad’s CEO, said the proximity of the subconti-nent to the Gulf and the sheer number of potential passengers made India an ‘obvious market’ for expansion. “Not many Euro-pean or American airlines fly to the secondary cities of India, Pa-kistan and Bangladesh,” he said.

Latest Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 takes to the skies

Rolls-Royce successfully achieved two major milestones in its Trent 1000 launch engine programme for the Boeing 787-9. A demonstrator engine, part of a pro-gramme that will deliver an upgraded 74,000lb thrust version of the Trent 1000, successfully completed a first flight on a Rolls-Royce 747-200 flying test bed, at Tucson, Arizona, USA. A series of test flights will progressively demonstrate new technologies for the 787-9 engine, including an advanced turbine case cooling system. A second engine, built to the 787-9 certification configuration, successfully completed its 150-hour endurance type test and FAA overtemperature test in Derby, UK. The 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft is due to be delivered to Air New Zealand in 2014. The Trent 1000 powered the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s entry into service with All Nippon Airways (ANA) in October 2011 and has now completed more than 41,000 flying hours with better than 99.9% engine dispatch reliability.

Aircelle builds first components for its engine nacelles to equip Airbus A320neo jetliners

The production of Aircelle (Safran) engine nacelles for Airbus A320neo jetliners has be-come a reality with the manufacture of initial full-scale thrust reverser components using concurrent engineering, rapid prototyping and lean manufacturing techniques. Aircelle’s first-build components include the thrust reverser’s forward frame and structural beams, its inner fixed structure and aft extension, along with the aft core cowl. They represent a major percentage of the thrust reverser’s structural framework – which becomes an important portion of the overall engine nacelle. The el-ements were produced with composite and metallic materials, applying the same manu-facturing process that Aircelle will employ in its series production of the A320neo nacelles – including automated composite lay-up. They subsequently were assembled at the compa-ny’s Le Havre, France facility, enabling a one-to-one assessment of their integration, along with a confirmation of the ergonomic aspects for production line build-up.

GE to acquire aviation business of Avio S.p.A

GE agreed to purchase the aviation business of Avio S.p.A., an Italy-based manufacturer of aviation propulsion components and systems for civil and military aircraft, for $4.3bn (€3.3 bn). GE plans to acquire Avio’s aviation business from Cinven, a leading European private equity firm that has owned Avio since 2006, and Finmeccanica, the Italian aero-space group. The transac-tion is subject to regulatory and governmental approv-als. GE will not be purchas-ing Avio’s space unit. The acquisition of Avio’s avia-tion business, which pro-vides components for GE Aviation and other engine companies, would fur-ther GE’s participation in jet propulsion, one of the most attractive sectors of the aviation industry. Avio will strengthen GE’s global supply chain capabilities as its engine production rates continue to rise to meet growing customer demand. Avio and its customers will benefit from GE’s planned investment in expanding Avio’s products and services. Additionally, GE sees excellent opportunity in the acquisition of Avio related to margin expansion. Founded in 1908 and headquartered in Turin, Italy, Avio operates in four continents and employs about 5,300 people, 4,500 of whom are in Italy, including approximately 800 in the space unit. In the jet propulsion industry, Avio is a provider of low-pressure turbine systems, accessory gearboxes, geared systems, combustors and other components. Avio’s 2011 revenues in the aviation sector were €1.7 bn ($2.4 bn) with more han 50% of that revenue derived from components for GE and GE joint venture engines.

United Airlines announced that pilots, rep-resented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), ratified a new joint labor agreement

January 7, 2013 / Vol. 370

The IdeaWorksCompany consultancy published a report analyzing car and hotel re-wards for frequent flier programs among 30 major global airlines, revealing the follow-ing observations:

- Six airlines (American, British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Southwest, and United) use online methods that mimic the ease of booking a car or hotel at an online travel agency website such as Expedia.

- Car rental reward booking queries showed an average retail value of $0.012 (1.2 cents) per mile. On the higher end, an Air Canada Aeroplan reward for a 2-day car rental at Or-lando for February 1-3, 2013 priced at $204 at Hertz.com required 8,500 miles – a value of 2.4 cents per mile.

- Hotel reward booking queries showed an average value of $0.007 (0.7 cents) per mile redeemed. On the lower end, an Air France Flying Blue reward for a 2-day stay at the Hilton London Heathrow for February 1-3, 2013, priced at $280 at Hilton.com, required 135,000 miles – a value of 0.2 cents per mile.

- Full feature car and hotel reward programs, which offer multiple brands online, usually represent 5% to 10% of a carrier’s overall mileage or point redemption activity.

According to the IdeaWorks report, car and hotel rewards are now offered by every major frequent flier program in North America and Europe with the exception of Turkish Airlines and US Airways. Of the 30 frequent flier programs reviewed, 20 offer hotel rewards and 17 provide car rental rewards.

During 2011 these top 30 airlines flew more than 1.5 billion passengers, 70% of whom flew on an airline offering car and hotel rewards in its frequent flier program. Among the top 15 airlines, only US Airways and those based in China don’t offer car and hotel rewards. Ryanair (ranked #6) is the only airline in the top 30 list that doesn’t provide loyalty program benefits. The prevalence of car and hotel rewards indicates it has become a “must have” amenity for frequent flier programs wishing to compete on a global scale.

The report suggests that airlines ‘might be better served by a more focused approach that supports the unique attributes of a carrier’s brand’ and cites two examples of ‘great brand building’:

“Virgin Atlantic builds on its unique identity by featuring the goods and services of sister brands in the Virgin Group such as Virgin Balloon Flights and stays at Richard Branson’s private island retreat. Etihad Airways polishes its reputation as a purveyor of grand com-fort by including grams of gold, a $20,000 Swiss watch, and a 69-foot yacht in its Etihad Guest reward catalog. But too many airlines fail to identify their unique qualities and only offer a dreary collection of everyday consumer products that could be found in a Walmart or Tesco. Airlines are the focal point of the travel business and should celebrate the magic of travel.“

According to the report, three primary methods exist for delivering car and hotel reward benefits to members. Online booking, with automatic deduction of miles or points, en-sures instant gratification. This method is most favored by consumers and mimics the on-line style of Expedia.com by providing a wide variety of car rental brands and vehicle types and hotel properties. Some airlines choose a second “preferred supplier” style which lim-its the online selection to one or more select brands. The third method relies upon paper or electronic vouchers, or gift cards, exchanged for services with a car rental company or hotel. The latter delays gratification and relies upon rather antiquated methods.

Competing forces always exist, concludes the report . . . “other airlines will happily poach customers and banks seek to lure away cardholders. The most effective method to main-tain the loyalty of members is to improve the appeal of your program. This can be ac-complished by adding reward seat inventory, improving access to upgrades, providing better personalized services, and of course by boosting reward choices through car and hotel rewards”.

One carrier’s recent advertising campaign said it best, “Loyalty programs should be loyal . . . After all, it’s called a loyalty program. Rewarding you is the whole point.”

IdeaWorksCompany reveals findings on airline redemption programs

Embraer and Boeing released that they will provide customers with a shared set of tools, called Runway Situation Awareness Tools, to reduce runway excursions. This further strengthens the collaboration between two of the world’s largest aerospace companies. To significantly reduce runway excur-sions in the near term, Boeing and Em-braer will provide customers with new pilot procedures and a training video on landing performance. In the longer term, the companies will also develop joint technology and systems for the flight deck to improve pilot information about approach and landing. Based on data analysis of past incidents, the companies believe the Runway Situa-tion Awareness Tools’ broad strategy to reduce runway excursions could be utilized by pilots flying other commer-cial aircraft, supporting overall industry safety. “Runway excursion is one of the three major contributors to aviation ac-cidents, and we firmly believe that a robust set of pilot procedures, training and new technology will substantially reduce these events,” said Paulo Ce-sar Silva, president and CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “This is another result of a successful joint effort from Boeing and Embraer on technological fronts, with important gains for our air-line customers.”

for all United Airlines pilots. “The ratifica-tion of this agreement is an important step forward for our pilots and the company,” said Fred Abbott, senior vice president of flight operations. “We look forward to the efficiencies and teamwork we will achieve as our pilots become one group once they complete their seniority integration.” The agreement runs through December 2016 and covers nearly 10,000 United pilots. Since merging with Continental, United has made significant progress in bringing together work groups. The company has reached several agreements including a combined agreement for pilots, agreements with flight attendants from the United, Continental and CMI subsidiaries; and agreements with technicians from the United, Continental and CMI subsidiaries.

Air Botswana implements ADSoftware’s AIRPACK Fleet Management System and Logistics Solution

ADSoftware announced a successful implementation for AIRPACK Fleet Management Sys-tem and Logistics Solutions at Air Botswana. Air Botswana has recently implemented a maintenance package that includes fleet management, inventory and logistics control, doc-umentation management, security management and reliability statistics reports. Though not required by any regulation, Air Botswana elected to proactively implement a framework of internal controls over its maintenance department as part of its continuing efforts to adopt global best practices. To achieve this in the most efficient way, Air Botswana chose AIRPACK as its ERP software platform. ADSoftware has first migrated the data of the three ATR42-500s; two ATR 72-500s and two BAe146 -100s owned by the airline. AIRPACK Suite was then installed and implemented across twenty users; trained on site by two experts responsible for the start-up assistance of the system.
