The Commissioner met with representaves of Government, civil society, business and industry, the media, with representaves of youth movements, arst and the diplomac community. A main joint programme on electrificaon was signed and the Commissioner discussed with Government the implementaon of the current programme of cooperaon and future acvies. Minister Mahiga of Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperaon met with the Commissioner for a wide ranging discussion of all dimensions of the relaons between the European Union and Tanzania, including the programme of development cooperaon, economic cooperaon and the many polical and global issues on which the EU and Tanzania engage in ongoing cooperaon and consultaons. Minister Mahiga visited Brussels last year and Commissioner Mimica's visit this year is yet another mile stone in the further development of the partnership between the European Union and Tanzania. It is a pleasure to present this special edion of our Tanzania News Flash, providing an overview of the highlights of a successful and producve visit by the Commissioner to Tanzania. Roeland van de Geer, Head of Delegaon O n 2 November the European Commissioner for Internaonal Cooperaon and Development, Mr Neven Mimica and the Government of Tanzania signed a 50 million Euro Financing Agreement to support the Rural Electrificaon Programme in Tanzania. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mr Doto James, who signed on behalf of the Government, explained that the support would play a significant role in implemenng the ambious Naonal Energy Plan to see all 12,000 villages powered by 2020. Together with the contribuons of key development partners such as Sweden, UK, Norway and the World Bank, the programme will provide more than €207 million to connect 3600 villages to the main energy grid and benefit more than a million people. The visit of European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica to Tanzania, was a true

reflection of the dynamic relations between the European Union and the United Republic of Tanzania.

YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE CENTRE STAGE

A head of the upcoming 5th African Union – European Union Summit which will be held under the overarching theme of "Investment in youth for accelerated inclusive

growth and sustainable development”, Commissioner Neven Mimica met with partners implementing EU supported youth programmes, at Nafasi Art Space. Commissioner Mimica presented the EU Spotlight Initiative – a 500 million Euro programme – to fight all forms of gender-based violence, including early pregnancy, female genital mutilation, child marriage and forced labour. During his visit to Nafasi Art Space, the Commissioner also met with young Tanzanian artists portraying gender based challenges, while the Muda Dance Group depicted 'young people migrating across oceans to Europe' in a modern dance performance.

O n 5 November, Commissioner Neven Mimica met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, to review the relations between the European

Union and Tanzania in the developmental, economic and political fields. They also discussed the upcoming AU-EU Summit in November in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Commissioner Mimica also met with representatives of the European Union Business Group (EUBG) based in Tanzania on 3 November. The Commissioner used the opportunity to discuss the European Investment Plan and underscored the importance addressing business and investment in line with the development agenda. On the afternoon of 2 November, the Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union in Tanzania met with the Commissioner for a working lunch.

VISITING THE PORT OF DAR ES SALAAM

O n 3 of November, Commissioner Neven Mimica concluded the day with a press conference which was held at the National Museum of Tanzania in the city

centre. During the conference, Commissioner Mimica reiterated the European Union's strong and well established partnership with the United Republic of Tanzania which was reflected in his official visit. He also gave a briefing on the discussions he had with government officials, civil society and non-governmental organisations, the business community and young people. The Commissioner also answered questions on the progress and challenges regarding Tanzania’s Second National Development Plan, as well as the cooperation between the EU and Tanzania in the fields of job creation, socio-economic development, sustainable agriculture and energy, rural roads, governance and human rights.

COMMISSIONER MIMICA MEETS WITH MEDIA

O n 3 November, Commissioner Neven Mimica visited the Tanzania Port in Dar es Salaam where he was received by Mr. Lazaro Twange, Ag. Deputy

Director General of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA). The TPA team gave a presentation on the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP) which aims at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the Port of Dar es Salaam. As Tanzania is well placed to become a regional multi-modal transportation and logistics hub, the Commissioner stressed the importance of keeping the Port of Dar es Salaam competitive both in terms of infrastructure and efficiency. An enabling business environment that allows private sectors investments is an important factor to strengthen the port’s competitiveness.
