CANFORD’S PRINCESS IS CHIUSURA HEROINEThe French-bred, but German owned and trained, Princess Asta (Canford Cliffs) boosted her paddock value with a fine win in the Gr.3 Premio Chiusura over 1400m for two-year-olds and upwards at San Siro yesterday.

The three-year-old filly settled well and relaxed behind the decent pace, and jockey Carlo Fiocchi asked her to move wide just before the 200m pole. Winning Jockey Carlo Fiocchi said: “The trainer decided to try blinkers with the filly and asked me to wait as long as I could. When I switched her, Princess Asta really showed speed and won very easily”.

The win was the eleventh for Germany in the Chiusura and the first for trainer Mario Hofer.

and this was just his third start. Bolger said: “He’s a nice staying two-year-old. He’s basically a middle-distance horse, so it’s good that he could do that over a mile on goodish ground. We have something to play with.”

Bred by Bolger and Ennistown Stud, he is out of the placed Rock Of Gibraltar mare Bring Back Matron, who is out of a winning half-sister to the Listed-winning dam of the European Champion Two-Year-Old and his own sire Teofilo (Galileo).

KNOCKAIRE STAKESSeven-year-old Sovereign Debt (Dark Angel) returned to Ireland for David Nicholls and landed back-to-back victories in the Listed Knockaire Stakes. The grey has a liking for the Emerald Isle, as his biggest and last victory, the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes, came at Tipperary last year and his records on Irish soil is now four wins from nine starts and he has been placed four times.

Truffles (Canford Cliffs) set the early pace, but Blue De Vega (Lope De Vega) took it up two furlongs from home. Sovereign Debt was never far away and, pushed along by Declan McDonogh entering the final furlong, he took it up soon after and stayed on well to score by two lengths from Blue De Vega and Downforce (Fast Company) kept on for third.

McDonogh said: “He seems to like it here. The ground was lovely for him as he just likes to get his toe in. He retains plenty of enthusiasm, even though he’s rising eight next year. He felt good and I was always happy. I was able to use Michael O’Callaghan’s horse as a lead horse and I just went by him easy. He idled a little bit, I pulled my stick into my left hand and it was never in doubt.

“Strawberry Martin was a bit keen in the early stages, but I had a nice trip and she won easily,” said Fabrice Veron.

She is one of the three winner foaled by the three-time scorer Strawberry Lolly (Lomitas), who is also the dam of the Stakes winner Tony Curtis (Rock Of Gibraltar). She is a half-sister to the Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed Strawberrydaiquiri (Dansili) and has a two-year-old full-brother to Strawberry Martini.

DUBAI SAND CONTINUES BOLGER’S RUN IN EYREFIELD STAKESJim Bolger and Kevin Manning recorded their third consecutive win in the Listed Eyresfield Stakes at Leopardstown yesterday as the Godolphin runner Dubai Sand (Teofilo) followed in the footsteps of Parish Boy (New Approach) and Moonlight Magic (Cape Cross).

Close up throughout, he disputed the lead over three furlongs from home and soon went clear. Asserting in the straight, he repelled the challenge of Diodorus (Galileo), the outsider of the four Ballydoyle runners and the John Feane-trained Youarewonder (Thewayyouare), who was a further length and a half back in third to win by half a length.

Unplaced on debut at the Curragh over a mile in August, Dubai Sand returned to run second at the same track earlier this month

“He’s a gorgeous horse to ride, he’s a push-button job. He lobs there on a long rein and doesn’t overdo it. When you ask him to pick up he does plenty.”

Bred by Yeomanstown Stud, he is a dual Tattersalls graduate. He is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Fred Darling Stakes winner and Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes-fourth Puff (Camacho), out of the multiple Listed-placed Kelsey Rose (Most Welcome).

REALLY SPECIAL REMAINS UNBEATEN IN MONTROSEThe first of three Listed contests at Newmarket yesterday saw a one-two for Godolphin when the favourite Really Special (Shamardal) proved her worth in the Montrose Fillies’ Stakes.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained filly followed up her impressive debut success at Chelmsford earlier in the month to make it two from two. Ridden by Jim Crowley, she made every yard of the running and won convincingly by two and three-quarter lengths from the Charlie Appleby-trained Kazimiera (Dubawi) and there was a dead-heat for third between Island Vision (Arcano) and Tansholpan (Dansili).

Bred by Darley, she is the first foal out of the Listed Ballymacoll Stakes winner Rumh (Monsun), who has a yearling filly by Dubawi and a filly foal by Oasis Dream. Her second dam is the Champion Royal Dubai (Dashing Blade), while the further family includes the Gr.1 winners Royal Highness (Monsun), Electrocutionist (Red Ransom) and Robertico (Robellino).

JAMES SEYMOUR STAKES The Brazilian-bred Energia Davos (Torrential) returned to Newmarket for the first time since his Gr.3 Darley Stakes victory last year and returned to the winner’s enclosure after landing the Listed James Seymour Stakes.

The striking eight-year-old grey was returning after 315 days off the track and he was settled at the rear by George Baker. The Godolphin runner Basem (Pivotal) took it up in the dip, but drifted badly right under pressure and Energia Davos asserted close home to win by a neck in a photo from the John Smith’s Cup winner Educate (Echo Of Light).

Bred by Haras Estrela Energia, he won the Gr.1 Grande Premio Linneo de Paula Machado in his native Brazil and is out of the twice-raced Star Brisingamen (Maria’s Mon). She is a half-sister to the Listed-third Quiet Trail (Quiet American; dam of the American Gr.2 winner Two Trail Sioux) and three Stakes-placed runners, out of the unraced Dixieland Band mare Unending Love.

BEN MARSHALL STAKESRichard Hannon recorded a one-two in the Listed Ben Marshall Stakes over the straight mile. Last year’s Gr.3 Craven Stakes winner Kool Company (Jeremy) jumped out to the fore and made the running, but was just denied on the line by Estidhkaar (Dark Angel), who got the nod in a photo by a neck, while there was a further three and a quarter lengths back to the favourite Latharnach (Iffraaj) and the rest of the field.

Owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, the four-year-old won the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes here as a juvenile, followed up in the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and ran fourth in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes on his last outing that year. He was second on his return in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes, but failed to fire in the Gr.1

2,000 Guineas and Gr.1Prix Jacques Le Marois. He returned earlier this month to take second in a conditions race at Salisbury and this was his first win since his Champagne Stakes victory in 2014.

Bred by BEC Bloodstock, he was purchased for £200,000 by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock at the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to the Gr.1 National Stakes and multiple Gr.2 winner Toormore (Arakan), who has recently retired to stud and will stand at Dalham Hall in 2017 as part of the Darley Club. They are out of the unraced Danetime Out (Danetime), whose Declaration Of War yearling colt was sold at Tattersalls this year to MV Magnier, Mayfair Speculators and Peter and Ross Doyle for 290,000gns.

LISTED GLORY FOR LORD OF ENGLAND JUVENILE PENNY LANETwo-year-old Penny Lane became the latest Stakes winner for Gestut Etzean’s Lord Of England yesterday as she claimed the Listed Prix des Sablonnets at Nantes on her third start. Smartly away, she was settled in the middle of the pack by Pierre-Charles Boudot as Just A Formality (Spirit One) cut out the running. Challenging wide on the home turn, she was carried to the stands side rail by the wandering Danarosa (Clodovil), but she had enough class to get balanced and win by neck from that rival, while the pacesetter stayed straight on the far side and was a further two lengths back in third.

AUSTRALIA

OCEANOGRAPHER RACES INTO MELBOURNE CUP CONTENTIONGodolphin will have its biggest Gr.1 Melbourne Cup representation ever after Oceanographer (Sea The Stars) forced his way into the field of 24 for Australia’s biggest race with a barnstorming victory in the Gr.3 Lexus Stakes at Flemington yesterday.

He joins Hartnell (Authorized) from the John O’Shea stable, Beautiful Romance (New Approach) and Secret Number (Raven’s Pass) from Saeed bin Suroor and his own stablemate, Qewy (Street Cry) to line up in the A$6 million race.

Oceanographer came from last with 500m to run to score by a neck from Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas), with another Godolphin runner, Tally (Street Cry), in third for John O’Shea and James McDonald.

The victory continued the great form in Australia of the small team sent to Melbourne by Charlie Appleby. Before the Lexus victory, Appleby had sent out the winners of the Gr.3 Geelong Cup [Qewy] and Gr.3 Bendigo Cup [Francis Of Assisi] and had Scottish (Teofilo) run second in the Gr.1 Caufield Cup.

Appleby passed on a large share of the credit to winning rider Kerrin McEvoy, who has ridden all of his runners. “Kerrin’s given him a fantastic ride, he’s on fire,” Appleby said. “I told him to ride him however he wanted, I wasn’t going to tell him how to do it, and the horse has found for him.”

Appleby confirmed that Oceanographer would be a definite

Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, she is owned by Ecurie de Montlahuc and was bred by in Germany by Gestut Etzean. She is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Schwarzgold Rennen and Gr.3 Preis der Spielbank winner Peace Royale (Sholokhov; dam of the dual Listed winner Peace Society), the Gr.3 winner Peaceful Love (Dashing Blade; dam of he Gr.3-placed Fort Hastings) and the Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes runner-up Phiz (Galileo), out of the Listed-placed Peace Time (Surumu).

GRAND PRIX DE NANTESLater on the card, four-year-old Holdthasigreen (Hold That Tiger) gained a second Listed success for his owner and trainer Claude Le Lay in the 2,400 metre Grand Prix de Nantes.

The winner of the Listed Prix Hubert Baguenault de Puchesse in July, the chesnut was ridden prominently by William Saraiva and he took it up before the home turn. Seeing off the challenge of Spirit’s Revench (Spirit One), after the pair had battled up the straight on the stands side, he asserted close home to win by two and a half lengths. The filly Glade (Bertolini) was a further three and a half lengths back in third for Christophe Ferland.

Bred by Jean Gilbert and Le Lay, he is out of the winning Hero’s Honor mare Lady Honorgreen, who is a half-sister to the Listed Prix Georges Trabaud scorer Kadgreen (Kadrou) and the Listed Derby du Midi winner Kingren (King Of Macedon).

Chris Waller likening him to his former stable star Kermadec, who won the Carbine Club in 2014.

“He’s followed exactly the same path at this stage,” Waller said. “They’ve got to keep improving to get to Gr.1 level, but he’s still quite raw. He’s got a lot of maturing still to come and it’s a recipe to suggest he could be a Guineas horse in the autumn, and we’ll thoroughly look forward to plotting a path towards that.”

The Gr.2 Sandown Guineas (1,600m) has been an option for Carbine Club Stakes winners in recent years, but Waller said he would recommend to the owners that the horse be spelled for the autumn. “I would suggest looking after him,” Waller said. “The autumn comes around so quick, especially these Guineas races. That would be my suggestion.”

He is the eighth foal and eighth winner for the remarkable producer Mica’s Price, who has also left the Stakes winners Silently (Anabaa) and Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice), as well as multiple Gr.1 winner Criterion. Her current two year-old by Pierro sold for $750,000 at Easter this year and she has a yearling colt by Fastnet Rock.

Comin’ Through is the 102nd Stakes-winner for Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, who has proven very successful with this female family also producing Stakes-winners Upon This Rock, Bull Point and Amah Rock.

ANOTHER MILLIONAIRE FOR HOLY ROMAN EMPERORFresh from siring his 60th Stakes-winner in Ireland on Friday with a Listed success at Dundalk for Kadra, high-class shuttler Holy

runner in the 3,200m Gr.1 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. “He’ll back up for sure,” Appleby said. “Whatever he does, he’s done us proud. We’ll just turn up on Tuesday and enjoy ourselves. The horses are thriving out here. The sunshine is doing them a power of good.”

Bred by Earle I Mack, he finished third to Qewy in the Geelong Cup last week on his last start, having progressed through handicaps in the UK. He is was purchased by John Ferguson for 360,000gns as a yearling at Tattersalls and is one of three winners from three runners produced by the Gr.2 Nassau Stakes winner and triple Gr.1-placed Que Puntual (Contested Bid). She is a half-sister to the Listed winner and Gr.1-placed Delivery Man (Southern Halo) and their dam, Repartija (Tempranero), was a Gr.1 winner in Brazil.

CARBINE CLUB WIN FOR REGALLY-BRED FASTNET COLTDerby Day at Flemington kicked off with a strong finishing win in the Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes for three-year-old Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock), who is a half-brother to $7million earner Criterion (Sebring).

Retained to race by his breeder Sir Owen Glenn and given to Chris Waller to train, Comin’ Through has been handled patiently and made a winning debut on 14th September at Warwick Farm.

Beaten at his next run by Niccolance, he improved sharply on that performance when stepped up to the 1,600 metres, relishing the big track and added distance to surge home and win by a head in a thrilling finish. The colt has now won two of three starts earning over $170,000 and the best is probably still to come with

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWBRITAIN

CAVALIER ATTITUDE FLOORS FAVOURITE CUE CARDIrish Cavalier put his more fancied rivals in their place with a confident display to take the prestigious Gr.2 Charlie Hall Chase, the feature race at Wetherby and the first major race of the 2016/17 National Hunt season. Racing with enthusiasm behind the leaders in third, he took over the running from Cue Card (King’s Theatre) at the third last fence. The son of Aussie Rules set sail for home, but his lead was gradually eaten into by the veteran Menorah (King’s Theatre), so that by the time the line came he only had an advantage of three parts of a length.

Trained by Rebecca Curtis and the winner of a Listed handicap chase at Cheltenham in 2015, this was his first win at Graded level and his eighth from 23 starts. He currently holds entries in the Gr.3 Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in a fortnight and the Gr.3 Hennessy Gold Cup Chase at the end of the month.

Bred by Limetree Stud and a Tattersalls Ireland graduate, he is a half-brother to the Gr.2-placed hurdler Make A Track (Hernando) and the Gr.2 Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race-third Shattered Love (Yeats), out of an unraced Bustino half-sister to the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle winner Make A Stand (Master Willie).

Roman Emperor was also in winning form at Flemington, where his five-year-old daughter Sheidel captured the Gr.3 Sensis Stakes to become racing’s newest millionaire.

Formerly trained by David Harrison and now with the Hayes/Dabernig parthership, Sheidel carried the Dorrington Farm colours of Robert Crabtree to yet another well-earned victory.

A brilliant last start winner in Gr.3 company at Caulfield, Sheidel was sent out a heavily backed favourite for this 1,100 metre sprint and produced her typically brave performance to return a winner. She led throughout with Joao Moreira in the saddle and fought off all challengers to win by a short head, her 14th win from 24 starts with earnings topping $1million.

“I’d say she won the race at the start. She was just too fast out,” Moreira said. “I wasn’t told to be in front, but she was left in front by herself easily and when I asked for her she responded very well, showing off what she’s capable of.”

Co-trainer David Hayes said Sheidel may be given her chance to live up to his assessment of her as a top-notch sprinter in next Saturday’s Gr.1 Darley Classic (1,200m). “I’m really thrilled with her. She’s a filly that wins more than she loses and a jockey that wins more than he loses so they were good combination,” Hayes said. “I think she’s a Gr.1 filly and she’ll probably get her chance at the end of the week to see if she is. We’ll see how she pulls up. If we’re happy with her, we’ll certainly look at it.”

Sheidel is a half-sister to Stakes-winner Latoria (Oratorio) and is the best of three winners from ill-fated Laventour (Metal Storm), who was a half-sister to the Gr.3 Strickland Stakes and Gr.3 Bunbury Cup winner Track Jester (Tenby).

These outstanding sales are certain to attract numerous European buyers, agents and trainers.

Midnight Legend took the lead three fences out and drew clear before the last, running on strongly to win by six lengths from Noche De Reyes (Early March), who kept on well under pressure.

This was the winner’s fifth victory and first since January, from 30 starts and his first at Stakes level and, according to Tizzard, he is likely to run next at Cheltenham in a fortnight.

Bred by Sybil Newell and twice a DBS graduate, he is out of a winning full-sister to the Gr.3 National Hunt Novices Handicap Hurdle-second Hopbine (Gildoran), from the family of the Listed-placed pair Lucky Man (Manacle) and Sugar Loch (Lochnager).

ASCOT HANDICAP CHASESternrubin, who jointly won the Gr.3 Ascot Handicap Hurdle over course and distance last December, had to pull out all the stops to take the Listed Ascot Handicap Chase. The five-year-old son of Authorized made all the running but on the run to the line after the last, as he hung left, four rivals began to breath down his neck and he had to cling on grimly to score by half a length from Instant Karma (Peintre Celebre), who was closing with every stride.

Also the winner of the Listed Gerry Feilden Hurdle last November and third in the Gr.3 Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, he has now won four of his 15 starts and is likely to run next in the Gr.3 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in a fortnight.

Sternrubin was bred by Gestut Karlshof and is a BBAG and Tattersalls graduate. He is out of the French Listed-placed Sworn Mum (Samum), a half-sister to the Gr.3 Preis der Winterkonigin winner Sworn Pro (Protektor), from the famous ‘S’ family, which has produced the Champion German Three-Year-Old Fillies Saldentigerin and Salomina. The latter landed the Gr.1 Preis der Diana, whist the former was third in it.

BABY BOY SNATCHES LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE PRIZEBaby Boy stepped up on his previous rivals to take the Listed Grand Steeplechase de Loire-Atlantique, the only National Hunt Stakes race on the Nantes card, which included the Listed Grand Prix de la Ville de Nantes and the Listed Prix des Sablonnets on the flat. Gold Dreamer (Early March) made the running tracked by among others Baby Boy. The five-year-old son of Maresca Sorrento made his challenge to take the lead at the final fence and quickened up well on the stands’ side to get up and score by a neck from Unzo Du Bara (Network), who made his way home on the far side, the pair some eight lengths clear of the rest. The winner of three other races, this was the winner’s first attempt in Stakes company.

Bred by Brigitte Daverne, he is a half-brother to Tarot D’Angron (Robin Des Pres), the winner of four races out of the unraced Miss D’Angron (Panoramic), a half-sister to the winner Fanie D’Angron (Sarpedon). The next dam Unique D’Angron (Rolling Ball) is a winning half-sister to the winner Quovaria D’Angron (Le Pontet; dam of the Gr.1 Gran Premio Merano Frost-third Gael D’Angron)

WEST YORKSHIRE HURDLEThere was a thrilling finish to the Gr.2 West Yorkshire Hurdle, with five horses all with a chance approaching the last. However, as Silsol put in a big jump to gain a clear advantage, one of his rivals Ballyoptic (Old Vic) stumbled on landing and fell heavily, though he got to his feet unscathed later. After the last, Silsol was driven clear and scored a shade comfortably from Native River (Indian River), who had cut out much of the running but could only stay on at the same pace.

The winner, a seven-year-old son of top German sire Soldier Hollow, who in landing this recorded his first Graded victory has now won nine of his 27 starts, including one on the flat in France and two over fences. He was the second German-bred winner of the day, following Sternrubin’s victory in the Listed William Hill Handicap Hurdle.

Bred by Gestut Hof Iserneichen, he is out of a half-sister to the Gr.3 Lillie Langtry Stakes winner Sevenna (Galileo; dam of the Gr.3 Prix de Royaumont winner Savanne and the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Sassella) and the Gr.2 Schwarzgold Rennen winner Scatina (Samum). His third dam is the dual Classic winner Slenderella (Alpenkonig).

MARES’ HURDLEStephanie Frances, who has been in good form already this season, collected her second Stakes win when collecting the Listed mares’ hurdle on the same card. The eight-year-old daughter of King’s Theatre tracked the leaders before making headway to take the lead at the last. She blundered badly, but managed to keep her footing and her advantage and, though pressed all the way to the line, kept on to score narrowly.

Speaking after the race, her trainer Dan Skelton nominated the Listed Yorton Stallions Mares’ Novice Chase at Bangor-on-Dee as her next target.

Bred by Maynard Hamilton and a DBS graduate, she is out of the unraced Brownlow Castle (Supreme Leader), whose dam is a half-sister to the Gr.2 Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle-third Stormhead (Move Off), from the family of the Gr.3 Brandon Handicap Hurdle winner Rupert Lamb (Central Park).

Stephanie Frances is catalogued as Lot 1357 in Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale.

ASCOT GOLD CUP HANDICAP CHASEAntony took full advantage of his low weight to take the Gr.3 Ascot Gold Cup Handicap Chase, the feature race at Ascot yesterday. Always handy behind Junction Fourteen (King’s Threatre), the six-year-old son of Walk In The Park closed in on the leaders three fences from home. He took up the running at the penultimate fence and then quickened clear at the last, staying on well to win by four and a half lengths to register his first win at Graded level and his fourth from 16 starts.

He is trained by Gary Moore, who has high hopes for his charge as a future Gr.3 Grand National horse.

Bred by Marie-Laure Besnouin, he is out of the winner Melanie Du Chenet (Nikos), a daughter of Biolaine (Iron Duke), who won 19 times and comes from the family of the multiple Gr.1 winner Le Sauvignon and the dual Gr.3 winner Vitray, both by Morespeed.

BYRNE GROUP HANDICAP CHASEThe Listed Byrne Goup Handicap Chase was won easily by the Colin Tizzard-trained Quite By Chance. The seven-year-old son of

From his first crop of three-year-olds in 2016, Sidney’s Candy is led in South America by his filly Pluja (Arg), winner of the Gr.2 Polla de Potrancas Stakes at La Plata. In America, he’s led by first-crop three-year-old colt Converge, winner of the Gr.3 Palm Beach Stakes earlier this year at Gulfstream, and Santa Anita Graded Stakes-placed filly Sheeza Milky Way.

RACING NEWSIRELAND

IRELAND CELEBRATES ITS CHAMPIONS AT LEOPARDSTOWNHorse Racing Ireland chairman Joe Keeling presented trophies to the Champion Owner, Trainer, Jockey and Apprentice, as the 2016 Flat season drew to a close at Leopardstown yesterday afternoon.

Through her association with the likes of the brilliant Gr.1 Matron Stakes winner Alice Springs (Galileo) and the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes winner Caravaggio (Scat Daddy), Sue Magnier has done just enough to retain the title of Champion Owner. She withstood a strong challenge from His Highness The Aga Khan, who counted the recently retired Gr.1 Irish Derby winner Harzand (Sea The Stars) and Gr.2 Blandford Stakes winner Shamreen (Dubawi) among his big winners.

Aidan O’Brien, who enjoyed five domestic Gr.1 victories in 2016, is once again the Champion Flat Trainer. The fillies Minding, successful in the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes, and Found, both by Galileo, were his big prize money winners during another tremendous season for Ballydoyle. O’Brien saddled Seventh Heaven (Galileo) to land the Gr.1 Irish Oaks and he also enjoyed top-level wins with the two-year-olds Churchill (Galileo) and Caravaggio. His other domestic Gr.1 winner in 2016 was Alice Springs.

Pat Smullen set a personal record in terms of the number of winners and prize money as he was crowned Champion Jockey for the ninth time. Smullen ended the term on the 115-winner mark and amassed over €3.5 million in prize money, helped in no small part by the success of Harzand in the Gr.1 Irish Derby. He also enjoyed notable victories with Fascinating Rock (Fastnet Rock), Shamreen and Zhukova (Fastnet Rock). For the second successive year, Smullen beat Colin Keane, who rode 77 winners, into second, with Seamus Heffernan in third.

Donnacha O’Brien (18) was another to enjoy a memorable year and in just his third season riding captured the Champion Apprentice title with 48 winners. Donnacha finished clear of Gary Halpin, Killian Leonard and his sister Ana in the table. The standout moment of his season was undoubtedly his first Gr.1 success which came at the Curragh, where he won the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on Intricately (Fastnet Rock), trained by his brother Joseph. For good measure, the filly was bred by their mother Anne Marie.

I Am A Star is the first three-year-old to win this race and she did it the hard way, racing from the front and repelling the challenges to score. The winner is the second at the highest level for I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), following Brazen Beau, who won the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby day in 2014. The son of Invincible Spirit is advertised at Yarraman Park Stud in 2016 at a fee of A$55,000.

A full-sister to the Listed-placed Band On The Run, I Am a Star is the third winner for Star Band (Dixieland Band), an unraced half-sister to the Gr.3 Gladness Stakes winner Common World (Spinning World) and the Listed Prix Yacowlef winner Speciale (War Front). Le Romain has raced consistently since winning the Gr.1 Randwick Guineas last season and he raced near the front rank here to the home turn before reaching the lead and holding off the challenge of the unlucky McCreery (Big Bad Bob) along the inside.

The winner is the best horse from the Australian crops of former Darley shuttle stallion Hard Spun, now back at their Jonabell Farm after a stint in Japan.

Part-owned by Mark Carusi, who bred Le Romain with his brother Anthony, Le Romain was not offered for sale as a yearling, though his dam Mignard (Strategic) was sold for A$18,000 at a Darley Reduction in 2009. Her dam Mielleuse (Night Shift) was placed in the Gr.2 Reisling Slipper and is a half-sister to the Stakes-winner and multiple Gr.1-placed Pursuits (Quest For Fame). Further back, Le Romain’s fourth dam Black Tights (Ngawyni) is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Black Shoes (Osmunda).

Mignard has a two-year-old filly Isabeau (Domesday) and has a yearling colt by Kuroshio (Exceed And Excel) and returned to him.
