Her full-sister, Ladies Are Forever, won the Gr.3Summer Stakes and the Listed Totepool Two-Year-OldTrophy, and Woods added: “Hoof It could become a Gr.1winner at some point, while Bryan Smart has a closerelative [Bop It, by Misu Bond] who he says goes well. This is a 9th May filly and there’s a lot of improvement inher. At the moment training plans will depend on thewishes of the owners who become partners.”Hoof It’s bid to gain top-level black type failed in the Gr.1

Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes when he was sixth, butbeaten only two lengths by winner Margot Did (ExceedAnd Excel). He attempts to go five places better onSaturday in Haydock’s Gr.1 Sprint Cup.

WINNING TEAM LAND THE DREAM

The teamwork between an agent and their client usuallyinvolves one doing the research while the other providesthe readies.

Yet Jon Aisbitt does not rely solely on Gill Richardson’sadvice when it comes to buying horses – he gets involvedtoo, by assessing the family. After the pair had combined to land an £85,000 Oasis

Dream filly (Lot 32) from Denis Brosnan’s Croom HouseStud, Richardson explained: “Jon’s a great client who putsa lot into his interest in racing. [At the sales] He picks outthe pedigree and I decide on the horse.”City-based Aisbitt has an intriguing two-year-old – a

Cape Cross half-brother to the Classic winner TreasureBeach, bought by Richardson last year for 120,000gns –who is in training with Mick Channon, and the yearling willbe heading to the same yard. After seeing off bids from agents Hugo Merry and

underbidder John Warren, Richardson said: “She’s alovely-looking filly and a good walker. Jon is getting somebroodmares together, but he wanted a real two-year-oldand she fitted the bill. She won’t take long to get ready.”Another choice filly with a page that could serve her well

in the paddocks – this one by Oratorio (Lot 173) from thefamily of Palacegate Episode – was knocked down toAiden O’Ryan for £80,000.O’Ryan was acting for Bill and Kenny Foley, who will put

her in training with Jim Gorman – he handles winning two-year-old Pierre D’Or for the same owners.Oasis Dream is a stallion whose progeny rarely fail in the

ring, and his colt (Lot 22) from Noel O’Callaghan’sMountarmstrong Stud put another £65,000 into the day’stakings. O’Callaghan, who raced the top-class filly AlexanderGoldrun, bred the yearling from the Danetime mareAlexander Alliance, a half-sister to the useful Ruby Rocket.Trainer Jedd O’Keefe signed for this February youngster,

who was the mare’s first foal, and later revealed he wouldtrain him for Paul and Caron Chapman, owners of the Yorkmaiden winner Satanic Beat (Dark Angel).

KHELEYF COLT HAS TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW

Wootton Bassett was regularly mentioned on BBC newsbulletins yesterday morning, but not in reference to thetop-class racehorse and his yearling half-brother who wasappearing at Doncaster. The news revolved around the Wiltshire town of Wootton

Bassett, which is being replaced by RAF Brize Norton asthe homecoming base for the coffins of British soldiers. The racehorse’s younger sibling, by Kheleyf, was notquite so newsworthy, but nor so sad.Richard Fahey, who saddled Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj)

to win five races as a juvenile last year – including the Gr.1Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere – was among those who wantedthe sibling, but Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brownhad the decisive say with a bid of 80,000gns.Brown’s purchase could be boosted on Saturday if

Wootton Bassett returns to winning ways in Haydock’sGr.1 Sprint Cup, although he said: “I bought DreamAhead (Diktat), and he’s running, too.“I’ve bought this yearling for Sheikh Sultan [Bin Khalifa

Al Nahyan] who owns Vita Nova [second to Blue Buntingin the recent Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks]. I’ve been buying horsesfor him for about three years.“I really loved this horse, although at this stage I’m not

sure who will train him – the family speaks for itself and thehalf-brother was a top-class two-year-old.”Offered by David and Trish Brown’s Furnace Mill Stud on

behalf of the Bryce family’s Laundry Cottage Stud, thisMarch foal’s price did not match that of his Kyllachy half-sister, who made 120,000gns in this ring last year. AndrewTinkler was the buyer on that occasion – he called herPretty Primo and placed her in training with RichardHannon. A minor injury has delayed her first racecourseappearance, but she is expected to be in action soon.

O’SULLEVANS FIND PROFIT IN IFFRAAJA glance at the pinhookers’ table revealed a lot of‘plusses’, but few jackpot results.

The better ones involved a bay colt by Iffraaj (Lot 75)who was bought by Maura and Gerry O’Sullevan ofIreland’s Cooneen Stud. They paid €18,000 for theJanuary foal at Goffs’ November Sale, and enjoyed a fineresult when he was knocked down for £72,000 yesterday.Ed Sackville, and underbidders Kevin Ryan and Stephen

Hillen, helped push the price into profit, but it was RossDoyle whose bid brought the hammer down.A son of the unraced Invincible Spirit mare Brave

Madam, the youngster stood out as a foal because “He wasvery forward, quite imposing and a good walker,” saidMaura. She added: “We thought he would cost more as afoal, but we followed him into the ring in hope and werepleased to get him for the price. Since then he’s doneeverything right.“It’s good to get a result at our first yearling sale of the

season, and we owned him ourselves.”The O’Sullevans are selling 24 yearlings this season,

involving pinhooks, and homebreds from their five mares.Gerry said: “We’re selling four each at Goffs, Tattersalls in

Doyle and Hannon involvement were the Cashmanfamily’s Rathbarry Stud – which gained £70,000 for anAcclamation colt (Lot 157) – and County Cork-basedDenis McDonnell, who brought a home-bred son ofChoisir (Lot 13) to the ring.McDonnell, who bred the March foal from the mare

Acidanthera (Alzao), looked on as the Hannon and Doylesteamroller took the price to £65,000, thwarting adetermined John Fretwell.Ross Doyle said: “He’s for Julie Wood to be trained by

Richard. We’ve been very lucky with the stallion – you canjust get on with his horses. They’re tough and genuine.”No doubt he will hope for the same result from a

£56,000 son of US-based, first-crop sire English Channel(Lot 45), who he bought from pinhooker MichaelFitzpatrick’s Kilminfoyle House Stud McDonnell was no less pleased with the Choisir colt’s

sale, although the business of breeding has its downsidetoo, as he revealed when saying: “We’ve failed to getAcidanthera in foal for the past two years, but she’sgetting a bit ‘agey’ [she’s 16].“We’ve not given up on her and will cover her again next

year. I’m very happy with the price and delighted this colt’s

Newmarket and Fairyhouse, and we’re selling here [at theSt Leger Sale] for the first time next week. We werehopeful this colt would do well because he has given 130to 140 shows since he arrived here.”

HANNON/DOYLE AXIS SO IMPORTANT

If Doncaster Bloodstock Sales needed a trainer’s resultsto advertise the horses it offers one name would towerabove his contemporaries – Richard Hannon. In partnership with agents Peter and Ross Doyle

Bloodstock, Hannon is a leading player at DBS, and hegets cracking results at the track. No better example ofthat is Canford Cliffs (Tagula), who was bought by PeterDoyle for £50,000 at this sale in 2008 and earned £950,000before being retired to Coolmore Stud. A giant canvas ofthat colt adorns a wall to the side of the auctioneers’podium at this week’s sale.Yesterday the Doyles bought 17 horses, headed by an

£80,000 Kyllachy colt (Lot 209) from the O’Callaghan’sTally-Ho Stud. This early foal was produced by the Listed-placed First Trump mare Ivania, and had made 52,000gnsat Tattersalls’ December Sale.Other vendors who enjoyed a good result thanks to

Gestüt Ebbesloh

Maura O’Sullevan of Cooneen Stud, vendors of Lot 75, anIffraaj colt, who made £72,000 when selling to Peter andRoss Doyle Bloodstock.

gone to Richard Hannon. It’s good to get a nice result withthe first yearling we’ve sold this year. In all we’re sellingten over the coming weeks – another one tomorrow, plusfour at Goffs and four at Tattersalls.”

TWO THAT GOT AWAY …

When Hannon and Doyle pursue a horse they often signfor it, but that was not the case with two high-value colts. The first, a son of Kyllachy (Lot 174), offered from Paul

and Sara Thorman’s Trickledown Stud, had a page totempt any trainer, let alone Hannon, who would havenoticed the name of his Gr.1 2000 Guineas winner Don’tForget Me under third dam African Doll.Of more recent relevance was the yearling’s dam,

Gleam Of Light (Danehill), a dual winner who hasproduced six successful foals, headed by Arabian Gleam,a full-brother to the yearling. Michael Dods was one trainerminded to land this April foal, and Richard Hannon Jrjoined Ross Doyle in trying to take him back to EastEverleigh, but Michael Bell, sitting alongside agentRichard Frisby, put up £85,000 and claimed him forNewmarket. Also bound for racing’s ‘HQ’ is an Acclamation colt (Lot

224), who, late in the day, became the session’s secondsix-figure achiever.Brendan Holland of Grove Stud bought this smart-looker

for €46,000 at Goffs last year, and was in profit once RossRoyle and Johnny McKeever squared up. Doyle put up£100,000, but McKeever added £5,000 and nailed theprize. The successful buyer said: “I’ve bought him for Steve

Parkin of Clipper Logistics to go into training with RogerVarian [at Kremlin House in Newmarket]. I bought a Listedwinner for Steve called Beyond Desire who did well forRoger’s predecessor, Michael Jarvis, and this colt followson from that.”

A mother’s kindness was rewarded by a £42,000 saleearly in the action.Susan FIeld was bought Xtrasensory as a present by

her son for taking care of him after a farming accident hadleft him wheelchair bound. That has proven to be some gift, as Mrs Field was

qualified for French premiums. Both Con Marnane andWillie Browne have a keen insight of resale value andknow that, with prize money as it is, a horse qualified forFrench premiums has added allure to a purchaser. It wasBrowne who secured the colt with a bid of £20,000.The vendor, Keith Reidy, of Haras de Moricand, was

happy with the price and has two more yearlings, colts byAmerican Post (Lot 269) and Choisir (274) to go underthe hammer today. He relocated to France from Limericktwo years ago with his wife, Annette McMahon, who alsotransferred her trainer’s licence to France. “We looked at the options with the French-breds,” Reidy

said. “The obvious place to go was Arqana but we thoughtwe would bring the horses over here to the breeze-upbuyers and save them making a trip. “There are plenty of them selling at the Arqana Breeze-

Up Sale [British & Ireland consignors] and they areobviously more keen to sell French-bred horses. They arethe only three horses [French-breds] in the sale and thereis less competition than last week [at Arqana]. I am happywith the price of the first one.”Those premiums for owners equate to 75% of the prize

money for two-year-old winners, 63% for three-year-oldsand 48% for four-year-olds and upwards. Tara Myerscough was looking at horses her fatherPhillip was due to auction at the Tattersalls December FoalSale last year when she fell in love. The object of heraffection was a foal by Sleeping Indian and after hermother, Jane, had looked at the horse and agreed to gohalves, Tara entered into her first pinhook. At that time he was a rig, but after successful treatment

he appeared yesterday as twice the horse with twopalpable testicles. The colt also had the addition in black

type of the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Zain AlBoldan (Poliglote) on the page. It was Will Edmeades, bidding on behalf of established

syndicate Thurloe Thoroughbreds, who trumped a host oftrainers when going to £52,000, a significant mark up onthe 12,500gns paid as a foal.Myerscough, who was quick to praise her brother

David’s input, comes from a racing dynasty – hergrandfather is Vincent O’Brien – and it would seem shehas inherited a good eye for a horse. As the transfer window in Football drew to a frenziedclose, Platt Promotions Ltd, aka former England footballerand Manchester City assistant manager David Platt, solda filly foal (Lot 140) for 12,000 to Malton trainer JohnQuinn. To put the craziness of the football market into

perspective, that figure would not cover half a day’swages of City’s highest-paid player, Yaya Toure. Colin Murfitt, a Soham-based building contractor, wasecstatic yesterday after selling a Kyllachy colt (Lot 160)for £78,000 to McKeever Bloodstock.Asked why he got involved in racing and breeding, Murfitt

replied: “It’s his fault,” pointing to trainer Rae Guest, whohad bought the colt’s dam Fen Guest in 2004. Murfitt nowhas nine mares at his purpose-built Pantile Stud, which heclaims is the only breeding operation in his home town. Hebelieves the former fen land is ideal for rearing horses. Manyof his homebreds he has put into training himself, includingVinnie Jones, a half-brother to the colt who sold yesterdayand who won at Lingfield last week.Murfitt had no thoughts of keeping this colt “as I can’t

afford it – I already own eight and a half horses.”Reflecting on the building trade, he said: “I started the

company in 1973 and in the good times I employed over a100 people. I now employ 80-90 people and while there isstill plenty of work on, there is not as much money in it.Murfitt built houses for Guest and Ed Dunlop and also

renovating Clarehaven Stables after it was purchased byJohn Gosden. “My house is still standing, so he can’t bethat bad,” opinied Guest.

sold, this colt is sure to have plenty of admirers from boththe Northern and Southern Hemisphere here atNewmarket next year”.Apart from triple Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner Makybe

Diva, the colt’s dam Tugela has also produced Gr.3 winnerValkyrie Diva and the Gr.2 winner and sire Musket, whose first yearlings will grace Australian sales in 2012.In just a short period Santic’s Makybe have built up a

formidable reputation of producing world class horses, such as Australian and European Champion sprinter andnow dual hemisphere Coolmore sire Starspangledbanner, and the Victorian operation will again bring another star-studded draft to Inglis’ flagship sale in Sydney.“We are extremely excited with the entire draft marked

down for Easter next year, but this colt is without doubtsomething extra special” said Tony Santic.“The Diva gave us an amazing ride and being such a

PERFECTIONS’S SON PLANET TOSTAND IN AUSTRALIA

The Niarchos Family’s homebred sprinter Planet Five(Storm Cat) has left trainer Pascal Bary’s yard in Chantillyto stand at stud at Touchstone Farm in Western Australia. The five-year-old son of the Champion racemare SixPerfections (Celtic Swing), has not been seen on aracecourse in 2011. His best victory came in the Gr.2 Prixdu Gros Chêne over five furlongs at Chantilly in 2010. His second dam Yogya (Riverman) is an unraced half-

sister to the legendary Miesque (Nureyev; dam of thesires Kingmambo, Miesque’s Son and Mingun).Planet Five will stand alongside Vital Equine and Flying

Pegasus at a fee of A$6,050.

MARCH STAKES, 14F, 3YO+, GOODWOOD

Though there were only five runners, the race was well upto standard and Motrice (Motivator), who stays further, was sent into the lead some way out and, though idling infront, was never seriously challenged. She has knockedon the door in Group races three times recently but nowhas the big black-type her connections will have craved. The obvious target would be the Gr.3 Jockey Club Cup atthe Champions’ Meeting, but she could have a go at theGr.2 Park Hill Stakes, confined to fillies and mares, on theway.

HOPEFUL STAKES, 6F, 3YO+, NEWMARKET

This renewal was just about up to the mark, but notexciting, with only one of the eight runners rated over 100(and he ran poorly). Swiss Dream (Oasis Dream) likes torun from the front, on a day that suited such tactics, andshe gained deserved black-type after a busy season intough handicaps, thus making herself a welcome additionto Lordship Stud, where she will eventually join her dualGr.3 winning half-sister Swiss Diva (Pivotal), whoseretirement with a fetlock injury was announced yesterday. It is largely job done, but Swiss Dream will doubtless runon in such affairs, though she will carry a penalty in Listedraces such as the National Stud Boadicea Stakes andthere is very little at Group level for her confined to filliesand mares, which would be her best chance.

BEVERLEY BULLET STAKES, 5F, 3YO+, BEVERLEY

This was a strong and competitive sprint up the sharp hillin the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a good view of the fineMinster church in the town. PEDIGREE FOCUS

MOON LATEST STAR DESCENDEDFROM LADY SYBIL

During World War II most racing in Britain was conducted ona regional basis, with many courses requisitioned by themilitary, and travel restrictions undoubtedly had an impacton the level of competition. It was inevitably more difficult togauge the merits of runners than it had been in peacetime,so it was hardly surprising that in those troublous times thereemerged only two horses who were generally recognised asoutstanding Champions. One of those acknowledged stars was Dante, whose

Derby victory on the Newmarket July course actuallyoccurred a month after V E Day, and the other was thetemperamental but brilliant SunChariot, heroine of the 1942Fillies’ Triple Crown. The daughter of Hyperion provedmarkedly superior to contemporary Derby victor WatlingStreet and, though there was no knowing how she mighthave measured up against a possibly worthier male inWindsor Slipper, the dominant colt of their year in war-neutral Ireland, some were inclined to rate her in the class offabled Pretty Polly, the triple Classic Champion of 1904.While Sun Chariot was establishing her claims to

greatness as a three-year-old, a year-younger tail-femaledescendant of Pretty Polly was turning in an impressiveseries of performances that resulted in her heading thejuvenile Free Handicap, 1lb clear of Nasrullah, so notionally4lb higher than that colt, taking the sex allowance intoaccount.

Like Nasrullah, Lady Sybilwas a daughter of Nearco, whowas already on the way to proving his outstanding merit as asire. The filly was bred and raced by Martin Benson, who hadpurchased Nearco for £60,000 shortly after he had ended his14-race unbeaten career with victory in the Grand Prix deParis, and she won six of her seven starts at two, impressingno less a judge than Phil Bull as “an exceptional filly.”Lady Sybil did all her racing that season between late May

and mid-September on the July course at Newmarket. Herreputation preceded her debut, for which she started at evenmoney against 17 rivals, and she duly won in pleasing style.Next time out, at 11-4 on, she failed to give 5lb to Cincture, going under by a length and a half, but a month later sheproved that the form was all wrong, trouncing that rival bysix lengths at level weights. For her first six races, all over five furlongs, Lady Sybil was

trained by Tommy Hogg, but he died at the end of August, and she was in the care of Willie Pratt when she contestedthe Cheveley Park Stakes, her first venture beyond theminimum distance. Underlining her dominance of her sex,she won readily by three lengths from the Queen MaryStakes winner Samovar, with Cincture far behind. In Best Horses of 1942 Phil Bull enthused about “a

beautifully neat and well-balanced, in every way charmingfilly.” He was impressed by the smoothness of her action, said that she was reasonably certain to stay the distance ofthe 1,000 Guineas, and noted that she had been entered forthe Derby as well as the Oaks. All his observations werepositive, but what followed for Lady Sybil turned out to bewholly negative. The champion of 1942, now trained by George Lambton,

had just a single start in 1943, and she was desperatelydisappointing. In the Chatteris Stakes, over the July coursemile, she received the statutory 3lb allowance fromNasrullah and, until entering the Dip, she looked as thoughshe might make a race of it with him. But her effort thenpetered out and she wound up nearly ten lengths behind him

in fourth, with only a 50-1 no-hoper who had dwelt at thestart behind her. That lamentable display made a 1,000 Guineas challenge

seem pointless and it was widely assumed that Lady Sybilwould be promptly retired to stud, but she remained intraining with Lambton to try her luck back in sprints as afour-year-old. The venture proved a total failure, as althoughshe started a hot favourite in both her races, she finished lastof three in one and seventh of nine in the other, a handicap.Just what caused her spectacular fall from grace was

anybody’s guess. It may be that she did not stay a mile, butshe must have given her experienced connections a degreeof confidence that she retained some of her old ability or shewould not have reappeared on the racecourse at four.It is interesting to note that in its remarks on the two-year-

olds of 1942, the Bloodstock Breeders’ Review noted thatLady Sybil was the sixth foal, sixth filly and first winner outof her dam, Sister Sarah. The writer opined that “as theothers were sired by Fairway, Cameronian, Dastur andWindsor Lad, it is evident that Nearco must be given thecredit for this most brilliant filly.” (He omitted to mention thefilly by Caerleon, who ultimately outranked the other four interms of their records as broodmares.) That observation serves to show that in the early 1940s

Pretty Polly had yet to be recognised as the outstanding tap-root mare that we acknowledge now. The best of herdescendants in tail-female to that point was Donatello, aNewmarket-based stallion, but one without a British profileas a runner, his nine-race career consisting of eightundefeated runs in Italy and a second place in the GrandPrix de Paris. The daughters of Sister Sarah played a significant part in

enhancing the profile of the Pretty Polly family, not least thatCaerleon mare, Caerlissa, whose daughter Edie Kelly (BoisRoussel) became the dam of Derby, St Leger and EclipseStakes hero St Paddy (Aureole). Edie Kelly’s daughterFighting Edie (Guersant) also made important contributions,as the dam of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Felicio(Shantung) and grandam of the admirable Flying Water(Habitat), whose successes included the 1,000 Guineas, thePrix Jacques le Marois and the Champion Stakes. The writer in the Bloodstock Breeders’ Review who so

readily ascribed Lady Sybil’s merits to the influence ofNearco was perhaps baffled when her full-sibling Sybil’sSister ran six times without reaching a place, but time wasto show that the daughters of Sister Sarah would beremembered more for their influence at stud than for theirracecourse performances. Sybil’s Sister became hugely important, first as the

grandam of Great Nephew (Honeyway), runner-up in the2,000 Guineas, winner of the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, and later sire of two exceptional colts in Grundy andShergar, as well as an outstanding filly in Mrs Penny.Among many other notable performers descending fromSybil’s Sister were such as Swain (Nashwan), FantasticLight (Rahy), Love Divine (Diesis) and Sixties Icon(Galileo), all Gr.1 winners here, and a host of stars in NorthAmerica, including Gorgeous (Slew O’Gold) and SeasideAttraction (Seattle Slew).

Sister Sarah’s 1944 daughter by Hyperion was LadyAngela, renowned as the dam of Nearctic, whose sonNorthern Dancer had an unprecedented impact on thebreed worldwide, and as the grandam of Northern Taste(Northern Dancer), an immensely successful sire in Japan. And later Sister Sarah products to make their mark wereHell’s Fury (Dante), the third dam of 2,000 Guineas hero To-Agori-Mou (Tudor Music), and The Veil (Nimbus),ancestress of such as Desirable (Lord Gayle), Park Appeal(Ahonoora), Shadayid (Shadeed), Alydaress (Alydar),Cape Cross (Green Desert) and Diktat (Warning).Lady Sybil’s own record has been less distinguished than

that of some of her siblings, and for some time she wasrecognised best for Count Rendered (Precipitation), thecolt conceived shortly after her withdrawal from training inher four-year-old spring. A smart, though not top-class,performer, rated 115 by Timeform, Count Rendered had aneffective stud career Down Under, siring a number of high-class runners in New Zealand and Australia. The daughter of Lady Sybil who was responsible for

keeping her branch of the family going was Esquire Girl (MyBabu), who produced Coronation Stakes and NassauStakes victrix Lucyrowe (Crepello), was grandam ofClassic-placed half-sisters Suni (Crepello) and Media Luna(Star Appeal) and the third dam of the Irish St Leger winnerOpale (Busted).Media Luna, beaten only a neck by Circus Plume as a

66-1 shot in the 1984 Oaks, was afterwards taken into theJuddmonte fold, and she has become the grandam ofClassic winners on both sides of the Atlantic. Flute (SeattleSlew) came first with her victory in the 2001 Kentucky Oaks, and two years later Brian Boru (Sadler’s Wells) triumphedin the St Leger.Brian Boru was out of the Gr.3 (then) Park Hill Stakes

winner Eva Luna (Alleged), whose current three-year-oldSea Moon (Beat Hollow) galloped to the head of the StLeger market with his recent impressive eight-length victoryin the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York. Although LadySybil’s own racecourse record was all about precociousspeed, her best descendants have required time andexperience, while exhibiting plenty of stamina. Sea Moon isnot going to fail at Doncaster for want of staying power.

MUFHASA LANDS SIXTH GR.1 INDOMINANT FASHION

Champion New Zealand sprinter Mufhasa (NZ) (Pentire)turned in a dominant display to claim the Gr.1 MakfiChallenge Stakes (7f) at Hastings on Saturday, defeatingan elite field containing a number of Melbourne springcarnival hopefuls. The outstanding short-courseperformer made easy work of the first Gr.1 race of theseason and opening leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown, with an impressive display of pace and power. The winner of the Champion Sprinter title at the New

Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards the night before, the crack son of Pentire (Be My Guest) has now won sixGr.1 events and NZ$2.28 million.“It was great to see him back in top form,” Ardmore

trainer Stephen McKee said. “All going well we’ll be backhere for the next leg [the Windsor Park Plate] as well.”

David Archer for NZ$50,000 at the New ZealandBloodstock Select Sale at Karaka in 2006, he has beendependable throughout his star-studded career. He is by the dual Gr.1 winner and sire Pentire (GB) out of

the Mi Preferido (USA) (Island Whirl) mare SheilaCheval (NZ). “This is more special than any other race and, as a

seven-year-old, you had to wonder if he was going tocome up again,” said Archer, who races Mufhasa (with hispartner Diane Wright and family). “Against a field of thatquality I had my doubts but I don’t think the stable did. He’s won at two, three, four, five, six and now seven andhe’s pulled up the best he’s ever pulled up.”The 2009 New Zealand Horse of the Year, Mufhasa was

stunning in victory at Hastings and there was alsoconsiderable merit in performances behind him.Jimmy Choux was encouraging on his resuming run and

he made up good ground in the straight after settling welloff the pace. The four-year-old entire’s joint-owner hasannounced the 2011 New Zealand Horse of the Year willhave only three more starts before he retires to stud. He willrace in the Windsor Park Plate on 17th September, CoxPlate at Moonee Valley on 22nd October and have his finalrace in the Gr.1 Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin in December.

Mufhasa (Pentire) and Samantha Spratt winning the Gr.1Makfi Challenge Stakes last Saturday

Mufhasa jumped away well to stalk the leader Fleur DeLune (NZ) (Stravinsky) and was travelling sweetly as thefield swung for home. He quickly took control and strodeclear to win easing down by a length and three-quartersfrom the recently-crowned Horse of the Year JimmyChoux (NZ) (Thorn Park) and a game Fleur De Lune.“He ended up in the perfect spot for him on the leader’s

flank and he’s got a great turn of foot,” McKee said. “He’swon a few from the front but he’s not a great leader to behonest.”Regular partner Samantha Spratt has enjoyed a superb

association with Mufhasa and she gave the crack sprinterthe perfect ride.“How can you not be in love with this horse,” she said.

“I’ve won six Gr.1s on him and he does it so easily. On thecorner I had to grab another hold and he was just bolting.”Bred and sold by Rich Hill Stud to the bid of joint-owner

Horse Of The Year Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park), who willhave just three more starts before his retirement to stud

Fleur De Lune was brave and passed her toughest testto date with flying colours, while the fourth Lion Tamer(NZ) (Storming Home) was also excellent. He finishedpowerfully along the fence over a trip well short of hisbest, while 2008 winner Fritzy Boy (NZ) (Brilliance) was afighting fifth. St Germaine (NZ) (Keeper) ran homegenerously for sixth ahead of Scarlett Lady (NZ)(Savabeel), who came from last in an effort that auguredwell for her forthcoming Australian campaign. RiderJames McDonald was delighted with her performance. The major disappointment of the race was the

performance of the highly-fancied Wall Street (NZ)(Montjeu). He over-raced and dropped right out ofcontention in the straight to beat only two home.

Stakes in the bravest style, making all and resisting allcomers. He was put in his place in the Gr.2 Temple Stakesand Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes, but is a tough nut at thislevel.

AUGUST STAKES, 11½F, 3YO+, WINDSOR

Four-year-old Opera Gal (Galileo), having risen up thehandicap though only winning twice in 16 starts, had beenplaced in Listed races on her last two starts, but wastaking no nonsense in this decent contest on ratings. Shewas ridden to post early and pushed her stall open comingout, though she did not gain an unfair advantage, andmade all to win without anyone else getting in a blow, herfive rivals strewn out behind her. It is a valuable win forLittleton Stud, which is having a good run at the moment, and job done, though she will doubtless run on and couldwin again, even at Group level against her own sexparticularly, but the only opportunity is the Gr.2 PrideStakes, which will probably be a hot contest.

CHAMPION TROPHY, 6F, 2YO, RIPON

There is often a small field of little consequence in thisrace, but this was rather better and up to snuff. Gerfalcon(Hawk Wing), third in the DBS Sales Race at York, swooped late to score from dual winner Gold City(Pivotal). He holds an entry in the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakesand, though he would have to improve further one wouldthink, that contest is not always the strongest and hecould bridge the gap to be competitive.

OYSTER STAKES, 12F, 3YO+, GALWAY

There was a good turnout and one-time Derby possibleZanughan (Azamour), who had not run since finishingfifth in the Gr.2 Derrinstown Derby Trial in May on his thirdstart, stayed on well to give hope that he may be a Grouphorse of the future. He wears a tongue strap but he shouldstay further and there are thoughts to supplement him forthe Gr.1 Irish St. Leger, which would be quite a step up butnot a forlorn hope.

CONDITIONS RACES

The first Tattersalls Millions race for two-year-olds over sixfurlongs on Saturday inevitably drew horses of a widevariety of ability trying to garner a bit of cash, but thehigher rated came to the fore and Mehdi (Holy RomanEmperor) led one group all the way and hung on to win bya short head from Samitar (Rock Of Gibraltar), with threelengths back to the third, the 92-rated Balty Boys (CapeCross), who was receiving three pounds. This makes thewinner a Listed-winning prospect at least and the Gr.2 MillReef Stakes is being mentioned for him too, with similarterms to Gerfalcon applying.Godolphin five-year-old Vesuve (Green Tune) is a

Listed winner and on Monday won a ten-furlongconditions race at Epsom, run at a slow early pace but ofListed class on ratings, in the manner of a horse thatshould compete in a Group race, but every time he has runin one, he has been well held. He will presumably headback to Stakes races, however, for another go.Colonial (Cape Cross) made all in another decent

conditions race over seven at Warwick on Monday, also

for Godolphin. He won three Listed races for Andre Fabreand knocked on the door in Group races, and he seems tohave retained a fair degree of his ability, though it is quitea while since he won prior to this. Hopefully this win willgive him the confidence to challenge at Stakes level again.Wrote (High Chaparral) is taking an apparently unusual

route for Ballydoyle horses of potential, running in anursery, but they have plenty to run and this chap shouldnot be overlooked as potentially smart after he took apremier version over seven at Galway on Monday, to betwo from three, off a rating of 89. For none other thanTreasure Beach (Galileo) won this last year for the stableand, though Wrote has a long way to go to match him, heshould be a smart sort over middle distances next seasonand could perhaps win a Stakes race this year.
