With the help of La Jolie Ronde, we've come up with some great ideas to celebrate European Day of Languages with the children, either at school, at nursery, at the childminder’s, or simply at home. We've listed some French and Spanish event themes, however these can be adapted for any languages you like!

European Day of Languages is a council of Europe initiative, that falls on 26th September each

year. It is an event of language and cultural diversity, that is celebrated throughout the UK and

in 45 countries across Europe. With the help of La Jolie Ronde, we've come up with some great

ideas to celebrate European Day of Languages with the children, either at school, at nursery,

at the childminder’s, or simply at home. We've listed some French and Spanish event themes,

however these can be adapted for any languages you like!

Music - A whole session devoted to singing using La Jolie Ronde’s Chante en Francais or Canta en Espanol CD with musical instruments at (www.lajolieronde.co.uk/online-shop.asp). Or why not hold a Eurovision song contest with each group of pupils writing and performinga different song with a prize for the best.

Games - Play a traditional game such as French boules.

Quizzes - Create your own quiz, crossword, word search in either French or Spanish.

Story time - Read well known fairy tales in French or Spanish.

Speak - In French/Spanish for the whole day in every class/at home.

Decorate - The School/home with flags and hold a competition in relation to France/Spain ie. What is the capital? Who is the president? Name 3 famous monuments, plus other questions you can think of.

A French or Spanish Breakfast Morning - Where parents and friends are invited. Offer a café style area where pupils dress as waiters and waitresses and serve traditional foods. French Croissants, pain au chocolat, preserves – Seville marmalade, Spanish and French pastries. The pupils could create invitations and menus as well as designing posters to celebrate the event and display throughout your school/home.

Further ideas could include:-

Dance Classes - Spanish flamenco or the Can Can.

Fancy dress - All pupils to come dressed as a famous French/Spanish personor in the colours of the national flag.

French/Spanish - Show a foreign film and discuss it afterwards.

Public speaking - Have a debate in French or Spanish where pupilsare encouraged to choose topics to discuss.

Language Marathon - Organise and see who can keeptalking in which language for as long as possible.

School Assembly - Hold a French or Spanishthemed Assembly where songs are sungand poems read out by the pupils.
