and processability o the non-crosslinkedsilicone sealant. Due to their ne particlesize, AEROSIL® R 8 S or AEROSIL® R are especially well suited or applicationin transparent silicone sealants, which areused, or instance, to seal shower stalls.Structural glazing adhesives based onsilicone materials are extensively testedwith regard to product quality, mechanicalstrength, aging, and compatibility. Thehydrophobic grades AEROSIL® R 7,

AEROSIL® R 8, and AEROSIL® R 8are suited or the ne tuning o themechanical and rheological propertieso silicone materials. They are alsosuperior to the hydrophilic products intheir improved resistance to aging, thanksto their extremely hydrophobic nature.High ller loading with low-thickeningcan be obtained using AEROSIL® R 8and AEROSIL® R which makes itpossible to ormulate structural glazingwith excellent mechanical properties.

Using AEROSIL® to optimize your production processes creates strong bonds

Polyurethane structural adhesives areused to bond automobile body parts madeo ber glass reinorced polyester resins. The automobile body parts are attachedby a structual adhesive to a steel rame, which bears the main weight o thechassis and the engine. The properties o structural adhesives and the demandsplaced on them are extremely diverseand include:

• Improved rigidity and strengtho the automobile body• Improved crash properties

o components• Waterproong of the raw

automobile body• Corrosion resistance

• Resistance to washing out by

means o rheology or pre-curing• Compatibility with immersion coatings

• Adhesion to oily substrates, ability

to be thoroughly welded• Good viscosity stability and

sag resistance• Process stability, string resistance

• Resistance to aging, good storage

stability

Another important application oradhesives in the automotive industry isthe window glass segment or the directsealing o windshields and side windows.Windshield sealants were introduced tothe automotive industry in the 7s, andremain standard practice today.Polyurethane adhesives are used or thisapplication. The requirements orwindshield sealants are:

• Direct adhesion, adhesion on glass, plastics, and coated substrates• Fixing of components with adhesives

during assembly• Improved structural integrity

• Increased rigidity of the automobile

body• Low electrical conductivity

AEROSIL® improves structural adhesives or construction o automobile bodies

Bonding is the technology o the uture inthe modern automotive industry. Thereare tailor-made adhesive systems or nearlyevery application in the construction o vehicles. The use o structural adhesivesor building automobile bodies hassteadily increased since the s, andoers the ollowing advantages overclassic bonding techniques, such as spotwelding:

• Bonding of dierent materials, suchas steel, aluminum, magnesium, andplastics

• For lightweight design components,

such as bonded roo modules• Improved mechanical strength

• No thermal inuence on the materials

• Low-stress composite structures

without load peaks• Useful for dicult-to-reach

components

Meanwhile, many automobile bodies are

bonded by weld bonding with an epoxystructural adhesive. Spot welding isused additionally to x the part until theadhesive has cured completely.

The hydrophobic grade AEROSIL® R is a very eective thixotropic and anti-settling agent or structural adhesivesbased on epoxy resins and polyurethane.AEROSIL® R and AEROSIL® R 85provide epoxy resin-based structuraladhesives with sag and process stability, combined with very good storagestability. The hydrophobic gradesAEROSIL® R 7 and AEROSIL® R have been used successully or many

years as thixotropic and reinorcing agentin windshield sealants based onpolyurethane.

Both hydrophobic AEROSIL® umed silicagrades can be used to achieve highlyviscous, thixotropic, storable adhesivebeads, which remain ready or applicationwith automatic glue guns onto theautomobile body components. For lowconductivity window glass adhesives, theAEROSIL® umed silica concentration isslightly increased and the carbon black

concentration is reduced.

AEROSIL® provides modern wind power stations with an edge

An important application or AEROSIL®

umed silica in the adhesives industry isits use as a thixotropic agent in specialadhesives or the construction o windturbines.

Wind turbines must be able to providetwenty years o service without requiringlarge-scale repairs. High demands areplaced on the durability behavior o therotor blades, especially in large units withpower outputs o .5 and 5 MW. Thequality o a rotor blade is determined by

the reliability o its many adhesive bonds. The use o systems with a high degreeo thixotropy is necessary to preventthe sagging o the adhesive on slopingor vertical walls during processing. Thespecial hydrophobic AEROSIL® gradesare particulary well suited or thispurpose. Currently, there are adhesivesbased on epoxy resin, polyurethane,vinylester/polyester resin, andmethacrylates available or this application.

The hydrophobic AEROSIL® R grade

is a very eective thixotropic agent oruse in polar epoxy resin, polyurethane, and vinylester resin-based adhesives.Furthermore, very good storage stabilitycan be achieved with the latter adhesiveswhen AEROSIL® R is used; theviscosity builds up again even aer highshear orces are applied, ensuring goodstability o the adhesive. The morecompacted AEROSIL® R VV grade oers the ollowing advantagesover the standard AEROSIL® R : less

development o dust during processing, shorter incorporation times, betterwetting into the adhesive, and also ahigher bulk density. This oers advantageswhen planning the installation and alsowith regard to logistics. Due to the highshear orces that prevail during thedispersion o AEROSIL® umed silica inthe adhesive, the levels o viscosityattainable with AEROSIL® R VV are almost the same as those o

AEROSIL® R . The ast-curing

methacrylate adhesives are especiallysuitable or carrying out small repairs.AEROSIL® and AEROSIL® 3 arethe primarily used thixotropic agents ormethacrylate-based adhesives.AEROSIL® R 7 and AEROSIL® R 7are two new AEROSIL® grades that havemethacrylate unctional groups attachedto their surace. AEROSIL® R 7 has athixotropic eect, while AEROSIL® R 7demonstrates a low thickening eect inadhesive systems, thus enabling higher

levels o loading.

The use o AEROSIL® R 7, inparticular, makes it possible to improvethe mechanical properties and the ageresistance o radical curing adhesives orgel coats. This is an advantage or unitsbuilt close to the coast or at sea, since theenvironmental conditions there areharsher.

AEROSIL® helps the electronics industry in sticky situations

For decades now, the electronics industryhas been the astest growing and astestchanging industry worldwide. Adhesivesare used in the electronics industry toadhere electronic components to printedcircuit boards and to seal electroniccomponents (e.g. relays). Miniaturizationis the main trend in the development o circuit boards and in manuacturingtechnology. The introduction o SMDtechnology (Surace Mounted Device)

in the 8s, replacing the then standardwired elements, made it possible toachieve urther miniaturization o thecomponents and a higher degree o rationalization during abrication. TheSMD process involves the direct solderingo the device contacts onto solder spotslocated on the surace o the circuit board.SMD adhesives play an important role inthe mounting o circuit boards withsubsequent soldering. They attach theelectronic devices to the circuit board

beore the completed circuit boards areipped for immersion in the soldering

bath. The adhesive is dispensed rom acartridge; this requires the adhesive tohave a suitable drop prole. The volumeapplied must be sufcient to bridge thegap between the circuit board and theSMD components. The diameter o theglue spot must remain within the spacebetween the solder spots, withoutinadvertently wetting the connection

spots with glue. The drop prole o theadhesive is dened by the thixotropy, the viscosity in a state o resting, andthe surace tension. Furthermore, theadhesive has to ulll additional highrequirements during application:

• Thixotropic ow behavior,

high viscosity in resting state• Sag-resistance during the

curing process• High drop prole, no strings

• Constant drop prole and volume

• High green strength

• High cure strength

• Rapid cure rate

• Guaranteed rapid application

o very small drops• Bubble-free application, low

moisture adsorption

Both epoxy resin and acrylate-basedadhesives are available or use as SMD

adhesives. The hydrophobic gradesAEROSIL® R 7, AEROSIL® R , andAEROSIL® R 85 are very eectivethixotropic agents or these adhesives.SMD adhesives can be adjusted usingAEROSIL® R 7, AEROSIL® R , andAEROSIL® R 85, to ulll the demandsfor thixotropic ow behavior, high

viscosity in resting state, high dropprole, and anti-sagging during the curingprocess.

AEROSIL® provides the construction industry with the strength to hang in there

Chemical plugs are composite anchorcartridges which have the ollowingadvantages over mechanical plugs anddowels:

• Adaptation to uneven drill holes

• High break resistance due to elasticity

• Simple handling at building site

• Corrosion inhibiting eect

Chemical plugs are available or use in

concrete applications, hollow block andaerated concrete constructions. They areused, or example, in the construction o tunnels to attach signs, lighting xtures,or ventilators. One- and two-componentsystems are commercially available ordierent applications. A standard one-component system consists o a glasscartridge containing a special syntheticresin, llers, thixotropic agents, and a

second smaller glass cylinder containingthe hardener. In order to anchor steel pinsused in the construction o bridges, theglass cartridge is placed into the drill holeinside a screen case, and is then brokenopen with a drill or hammer. The steel pinis xed directly into the reaction resinwhich is now beginning to cure. Improvedbonding strength is achieved betweenthe concrete, the adhesive, and the steelrod. Due to its elasticity, the system is less

likely to crack than classical plugs, especially as a result o expansion withinthe concrete.

Finally, there are also two-componentsystems available as exible foil cartridges,

so-called “side-by-side” cartridges, whichrequire the resin and hardener to be mixedwith a static mixer prior to application. These systems are advantageous i a

precise drill hole cannot be made, or i an irregular drill hole already exists.

Vinylester resins, epoxy resins, orpolyester resins make up these syntheticresins. The hydrophobic gradeAEROSIL® R is especially suitable orproviding vinyl resins and epoxy resinswith an eective thixotropy, whereas thehydrophilic AEROSIL® is used inpolyester resin applications.

During the exothermal curing, the highdegree o thixotropy and high yield valueo the reaction resins prevent saggingon sloping and vertical suraces duringapplication. Both AEROSIL® gradesunction additionally as anti-settlingagent and prevent the settling o llersin the cartridges during storage.
