    Front cover analysis

I had to annotate a number of front covers, The first front cover I looked at was that of a Kerrange

magazine which had a very distinct target audience as the theme and genre of the magazine is Rock and

heavy metal, the use of images and home style represent this with the un-even jagged lettering showingthe madness and anger of the music.

Text they have used is different throughout showing that it is text heavy and aggressively laid out even

though there is an order to it they have still made it very unique in comparison to other magazines .

The use of the main image takes up a large space of the cover showing the audience what they want to

see and using a small amount of text.

The second magazine cover I annotated was the Mojo magazine the theme looks very old school and

designed for a specific age group a more mature audience. in comparison to the Kerrange magazine it is very

different and targeting in a very different way but still not including a lot of text and information the image is the

main feature to the front page. The Mojo magazine has a lot more structure and space in the layout showing

the theme off in a more serfisticated and clear way.

The sub titles are relating to the interest of the audience name dropping celebrities that are of interest to the

    buyer and the target audience.

The third magazine that I had to annotate was Top of the pops it was clearly aimed at a more younger

girlier audience with the use of pink feminine text and font style.

The mid shot of Tulisa looking very thin beautiful and glamorous is seen as a role model to the

audience encouraging girls to but the magazine. Informal language used in the magazine cover

making it more personal to the buyer making it feel like it was written specifically to them.

Out of the magazine this is the most different as it is very colourful and aimed for females, They have

shown being feminine in a very stereo way as the colours they have chosen to use is pink.

    Content pages

In the Top of the pops Content page it is clear to see that they have continued the home style

from the front cover on throughout the magazine making sure that there theme is not lost

keeping in with the target audience being of the younger generation and female.Showing information and gossip in a very minimal and age appropriate language making sure

that they are relating to the audience .Showing images of young celebrities that are of interest

to the reader helps regain attention and showing them the kind of gossip and news that is

featured in the magazine giving them things to look out for.

The colours throughout stand out as being very stereo typical for a female audience. On the

content page they have gave many sub titles and different things of interest personalising the

magazine by using headings such as All about you

    and we love shopping .

In comparison to the Kerrange magazine it is obvious to see there approach, kerrange has a

majority masculine audience which they have catered for using dark images and home style

making it more relevant to the audience.

Keeping it very simple with the Sub titles making it very easy on the eye.

The Kerrange content page its substantially less manic than the front page like they have

dumped it down adding less images and less text trying to make the layout more clear andstraight to the point.

But sill keeping in with the home-style text of the Kerrange title.

Top of the pops and kerrange are a good example of the different genres and how different

sexs and ages ranges are approached by the media.

    Double page spread

Behind Bars! Is the double page spread featured in the Top of the pops magazine even though

they haven't followed on with the house style they have cleverly keeped in with the context in which

the audience can understand seen as they are a younger readers the words and information is very

    age appropriate.

They have chosen to use purple and burgundy colours on the page drawing the attention back to the

main image of JLS as they are wearing similar colours to the background.

Showing images of a group that are very recent and attract a female audience. They have chosen touse question and answer format through out the page involving the audience and making them

interact and get involved making them feel like the magazine is more personal to them and

encourages them to make it a regular thing to buy.

The kerragne double page spread is very packed and full there is no space left blank.

With the amount of text used it shows that they have a more mature and more intellectual fanbase as they have chosen to include a lot of writing. even though there is a large image.

The amount of text and image is balanced.

They have kept in with the theme of darkness throughout showing images of a band that are of

particular interest to the reader encouraging them to read.

The expressions on the bands face is very serious and straight to the point like the page itself.

Informal language used throughout with the use of swearing.

In what ways does your media product use, develop orchallenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media music magazine to some extent challenges and develops formsand conventions as the when doing the parliamentary task of planning andwriting out a music questionnaire I have gone against this as looking andanalysing my questionnaire me target audience was for 40+ rock. I wentagainst what people wanted as I thought it would be interesting to seehow people reacted to my magazine and I wanted to provide to a morecomplex audience.I have challenged the stereo type as on my front cover I have used animage of a black Dj showing that we live in a multi cultural society and it isnot just young white middle class boys that are interested in being a Dj.Still now in are society it is not often that you see a black person on thefront cover of magazines, I want to embrace the fact that we live amongstmany cultures and hopefully it has a positive reaction off the consumer .I am trying to both challenge and reinforce as the way I have chosen torepresent the young audience i have use appropriate text including artist

of interest and included a lot of pictures so that they stay involved andinterested.

How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represents a particular social group by containing images of

young teenagers doing positive things and contributing to society.I feel like teenagers are looked down upon by people in society and I think I have

shown them in a positive light, and gave something to aspire to be like.

In my double page spread I have shown an interview with Nicola Roberts a

normal girl like everyone else who always aspired to be in the music industry, I

hope by using content such as this and upcoming artist explaining the way to

fame hopefully it will have a positive effect in the consumer.

I think it is a positive representation on my chosen social group I have targeted atteenagers and young adults. I shows them in a way in which will have a positive

effect on the reader motivating them in to doing good with their lives and making

    the most of it.

In the magazine I have incorporated new artist and some interviews showing how

the artist made it to where they are today in hope it will motivate the consumer

inspiring them to focus their attention on good things instead of going down thewrong path.

When doing my music magazine I have been aware that young people do not

always get good press and have made a bad name for them selves.

I have research a number of dance magazine mix mag,DJ.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think the most suited media institution to distribute my magazine would be IPC media. Ithink this because IPC media only produce one music magazine at the moment and that isNME. Although I think my product isnt similar to this magazine I feel I could help IPCmedia become a bigger industry in the music world. IPC media is a respected well knowninstitution however I feel there is a market for my magazine in their buissness. Mymagazine could help them become bigger and get a more diverse audience and they couldhelp my product become a well known magazine.

The media institution that would distribute my music magazine would beName them and find examples that are similar from them then compare yours to theirs.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience I have targeted my music magazine on is teenagers and young adultsthat are interested in dance music which is planned in clubs and pubs 18-25.I have tried to attract a trend young and fresh audience with the use of imagery, Ihave use to represent the kind of audience of am targeting it to.style the type of clothing worn is a big part of the over all image as it is the first thingyou notice if the person in the front cover image wasnt dressed in the way that wouldrepresent coolness and youth it would not be as successful when attracting the

audience.I have challenge the conventions of my target audience as the content includes a lotof djs my front cover image is of an African Caribbean which is not the kind of imageyou would usually see, I want to show that we live in a multi cultural society and thateveryone has the right to express them selves threw music.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience with the use of imagery by using pictures of artist that of

similar age to the audience so they can relate better.Being a teenager myself I have a heads up on what it is my target audience would

like to see so using appropriate text and language to keep them interested.

The layout of the magazine was also something that I thought would be positive as I

have not used a lot of text so it was not text heavy I tried to use a lot of images.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in theprogression from it to the full product?

I feel like I have learned a lot of new skills that have contributed to making the music

magazine the best it can be.Every task we were set seemed easy at first but all turned out to be very challenging

    and time consuming.

I have learned how to use many different programmes and softwares on the

computer and it is something I will use again the future.

Even the task of having to take pictures was challenging having to use unique and

    original images.
