2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Throughout our documentary we tried to create a brand identity, to keep consistency through all three of our products and to make sure we were attracting our target audience (14-45 year old women). Ways in which we did this were:

• Using the same font throughout our documentary and magazine article

• Our images in the magazine article were stills of vox pops and professional interviews

• We picked the same quotes from our interviews to use in the article (highlighted as pull quotes) and radio trailer Arial NarrowIn order to make our products appealing for our broad target audience, we kept our magazine article quite neutral in terms of colour. We also used a conventional layout and use of images, so that nothing was too wacky and could have been biased to a certain age range.

We also used a female voiceover to create a relatable character for our target audience. This was done so they felt like they were being represented fairly and to add more realism.

To familiarise our audience with our products, we used the same backing track for our documentary and our radio trailer. This is a simple, yet effective way of linking our products and getting our audience to remember them just by hearing the music.

This is done predominantly on TV, with one example being ITV2s ‘The Only Way Is Essex’. They used major song ‘The Only Way Is Up’ by Yazz as their theme tune and immediately got their audience associating it with the programme whenever they heard it.

When choosing which magazine to include our article in, we had to carefully pick one that is read mainly by females. After going through many options, we decided that The Daily Mail supplement ‘Fabulous’ fit our criteria the best. After looking on the magazine website, it was clear that the target audience is females, from the colours, layout and headings used.

In our documentary, we used still images of celebrities with iconic appearances, such as Rihanna. She is famous for her bright red hair, which has become part of her identity as a musician. We found that she was on a cover of ‘Fabulous’, which reinforced this identity, so we used it as background footage. This is an example of consistency through two of our products.

3. What methods did you use to gain audience feedback?

For our audience feedback, we got both quantitative and qualitative data by using open and closed questions. We made sure we used plenty of closed questions to make analysing data easier, but we also wanted individual opinions so that we knew what was successful about our products and what could be improved.

How informative/professional were our expert interviews?

Excellent

Good

Ok

Poor

In terms of our documentary, our feedback was very positive. Out of the 24 people we asked, 24 said our documentary looked professional and 22 said it was appropriate for the target audience. As illustrated by our graphs, our feedback showed that our expert interviews were a main strength to our documentary, with 6 rating it ‘excellent’, 16 rating it ‘good’ and only 1 rating it ‘poor’. I would agree with this because we took great care in trying to get the best possible interviews from a professional perspective. We got in contact with many shops and organisations and I feel that we gained a range of opinions by using a Make up Consultant, Fitness Instructor and 17 year old Model.

What main points can you remember from our documentary?

How would you improve our documentary?

Music too loud

More voice over

Sound Levels

Better framing / vox pops

Our audience feedback made us aware that our sound levels were the main problem in our documentary, as a unanimous opinion. We knew that the sound levels in some of our vox pops could have been improved, but when we evaluated our own products we actually included sound levels as a positive:Evaluation

Microphone showing Radio trailer voiceover could be more enthusiastic Sound levels for vox pops

+ Sound levels Appropriate background footage for voiceover Professional filming Magazine looks professional Lighting

However, when we watched our documentary back when we were retrieving our audience feedback, the backing track did sound louder than we expected. Some of our interviews also sounded too quiet, but this was something that didn’t seem apparent from watching it on the Apple Mac.

Our magazine article was rated highly by the majority of our feedback participants. It was mainly rated 7/10 which I feel is a good score for a product aimed at such a broad target audience.

Our feedback showed that the most effective areas of our article were the images and the layout, with 3 people also mentioning our interview format. I think these things have to be successful in any article, but it’s especially important for us as we had a wide range of ages to appeal to.

It would have been useful for us to get some audience feedback from other ages included in our target audience, as we were limited to 18 being the oldest age. This probably would have changed our results quite dramatically and would have given us a better insight into views of our products from all ages of our target audience.

After hearing the Radio Trailer would you be encouraged to watch our documentary?

yes

no

Overall, our feedback for our radio trailer was very positive. The majority of people rated it 9/10, with the lowest rating being 6/10. Only 2 people said that our radio trailer wouldn’t encourage them to watch our documentary, so I feel that we promoted it successfully by using typical conventions.

We decided on ‘Capital FM’ radio station to air our radio trailer, because we felt it linked best to ‘Channel 4’, our chosen channel for the documentary. There wasn’t a perfect match because Capital’s target audience is 15-34 and Channel 4 target around 18-35 year olds. This disregards the 36-45 year olds included in our target audience, but still reaches the majority.

The use of a focus group for our audience feedback would have given us a better insight into what people thought about our products. We could have made it more informal for our participants by getting them to talk about their opinions while we take notes. This could have been a successful approach for getting more honest, natural views but it would have also been time consuming. It would have given us less data and although it would be precise, it would use only a small sample.
