How did you attract/ address your audience?

Question 2

Page 2: Evaluation Question 2 - How did you attract/ address your audience?

To start…In order for me to be able to begin the construction of my music magazine, I needed to carry out research into other existing music magazines within the genre I had chosen and what made the specific target audience attracted to these magazines.

During my research I found two main pop music magazines ‘We Love Pop’

and ‘Top of the Pops’. I Looked at the styles of these magazines, layout and got my inspiration from these.

While carrying out my research into the two existing pop magazines I noticed the ratio of images to text, as these magazines currently have young target audiences the ratio is more images than text, even when there is text it is very minimal and in an unsophisticated language.

I also noticed that the colours used were very bright and easily attract the eye to the page. The colours are a key part in attracting an audience to a magazine as it shows interesting features. Throughout the magazine bright colours are used to keep the audience interested. The background images and shapes are highly colourful and the text is either plain black or white to stand out and create contrast between the two.

The models used in the images are generally artists featured in that issue of the magazine.

Research…For my research I used different methods to get the information that I needed in order to create a professional looking magazine.

One method I used was Survey monkey.

I used this to create a questionnaire, to seek out what people wanted from a magazine and what people would prefer. In this I asked about colour, ratio of images to text and much more.

In order to get a wide range of answers for my questionnaire, I shared the link to my questionnaire on Facebook and twitter.

The findings of my questionnaire showed that pop was in the top two favourite music genres that people preferred.

For my research I also created mood boards, to look at the type of artists included in these genres, album covers current existing magazines, mise en scene, props and types of fans for certain genres this helped me plan my photo-shoot for my own music magazine.

How would I attract the target audience to my magazine?

Colours.

Bright colours are a big technique I have used to attract the audiences eye to the magazine, this is needed as I want my magazine to stand out from the others on a supermarket shelf. The bright colours also reflect the typical stereotype of the pop industry, as this is generally happy and smiley, compared to a hip hop magazine which is mostly dominated by attitude.

In order to make my magazine stand out I used bright colours on my front cover, contents page and article such as pink, blue and green. The bright colours also help to make certain features for example the mast head to stand out from the rest of the page.

For my specific target audience colour is also important as my target audience is for young teenage girls.

How would I attract the target audience to my magazine?

ImagesThe images used in my magazine consist of young, attractive people who represent the pop genre well and appeal to the target audience. The idea behind using young artists related to the genre of my magazine is that they would be well known by the target audience, they would be recognised and this would therefore encourage the fans of the artists to buy the magazine.

The images that I have used include direct mode of address, with happy expressions on their faces, this is so that the audience feel a connection with the artists.

The main artist I have chosen to use is a male because my target audience is aimed at young teenage girls, and I feel this will appeal to them better than a main female artist on the front cover. In my magazine I have also included female artists though as I feel my magazine needs a balance of both genres.

How would I attract the target audience to my magazine?

Language/ContentThe language used in most pop magazines is informal and very basic as the majority of the pop magazines are read by younger teens. Therefore I have followed this convention and I have used informal language and basic sentences and layout text structure to make it easy for the audience to read.

For example in my article I have Q&A, as this makes it easier for the audience to skip to the part of the article they are interested in reading. This allows the reader not to be overwhelmed by the amount of information about the artist.
