We don’t even let hus- bands in. That way everybody is more relaxed.” In the rush hours on week ends, the Mat- thews* crew can turn out 100 hair stylings in two hours. A lot of night customers are dance teachers whose daylight hours are booked solid and who want their coiffures to look neat and new every morning. Matthews invented the orchid tint which the Copa girls used and which the Copa will bring back this fall. It's catching on in show business. It’s a rinse which is permanent yet can be removed by Ahe maestro’s boys on demand. Matthews' day man- ager is Armand Devemier, who - used to be a cowboy film actor > nnmnrt Bob Stevens. Matthews t doesn’t know why Devemier . turned to beauty parlor work I unless the pony-tail hairdo ; makes him feel at home. “Idon’t know why other salons t haven’t opened at night,” Mat- t thews said. “The daytime beauty I parlor competition is murder- ous.” i It was well after midnight so things were jumping in Larry Matthews’ all-night beauty sa- lon in the Great Northern Hotel. The big room is air-conditioned but all the male operators were in Bermuda shorts and Matthews himself wore a sports shirt. There was a pretty face under every drier and it looked as if half of show business was there. It’s been three and a half years since Matthews and his wife, Norma, decided to try staying open 24 hours a day in the hope that night business might be a shot in the arm for their struggling beauty parlor. The idea was such a smash, mostly with the show business mob, that soon Matthews will open a vast all-night salon on Broadway. In one chair a pretty girl named Janie Bensch was reading a television script while a male manicurist named Don Atkins worked on her free hand. Janie said she was all excited because there’s an opening in Lee Stras- berg’s drama classes and she’s dying to qualify. I asked why everybody is dying to study with Strasberg or Actors Studio, these days, and Mr. Atkins looked up from the nail polish and an- swered for her. “Because it’s the quickest way into the theater, rightly or wrongly,” he said firm- ly, never pausing with the nail buffer. Atkins also is an actor. Most of the operators double as models or dancers or actors. ** * * "Sometimes I think I'm run- ning a casting agency here,” Matthews admitted. “We heard that La Vic wasn’t satisfied with the girls auditioning for the chorus line so we kept send- ing our customers down and all of them got jobs. Perry Bruce doing that girl's hair over there is a former dancer and taught Allison Rainey enougl dancing so she could get a jot at the Copa and later Las Ve- gas. He used to teach her whlli i setting her hair. Allison learned r her routines while her hair was drying.” A girl who looked enough like ; Marilyn Monroe to be her iden- [ tided herself as Fay Lafayette. ! She was having her hair done 1 at night because the next day ; she had a dramatic lesson, a ' singing lesson and a dancing r lesson. The Matthews Salon gets mostly youngsters like Fay. ! lon in the Great Northern Hotel. The big room is air-conditionedbut all the male operators werein Bermuda shorts and Matthewshimself wore a sports shirt. There was a pretty face underevery drier and it looked as ifhalf of show business was there. It’s been three and a half yearssince Matthews and his wife,Norma, decided to try stayingopen 24 hours a day in the hope

that night business might be a

shot in the arm for theirstruggling beauty parlor. The

idea was such a smash, mostly

with the show business mob, thatsoon Matthews will open a vastall-night salon on Broadway.

In one chair a pretty girl

named Janie Bensch was reading

a television script while a malemanicurist named Don Atkinsworked on her free hand. Janiesaid she was all excited becausethere’s an opening in Lee Stras-berg’s drama classes and she’sdying to qualify. I asked why

everybody is dying to study withStrasberg or Actors Studio, thesedays, and Mr. Atkins looked upfrom the nail polish and an-swered for her. “Because it’s thequickest way into the theater, rightly or wrongly,” he said firm-ly, never pausing with the nailbuffer. Atkins also is an actor. Most of the operators double asmodels or dancers or actors.

"Sometimes I think I'm run-ning a casting agency here,”Matthews admitted. “We heardthat La Vic wasn’t satisfiedwith the girls auditioning for

the chorus line so we kept send-ing our customers down and allof them got jobs. Perry Brucedoing that girl's hair over thereis a former dancer and h«taught Allison Rainey enougldancing so she could get a jot

at the Copa and later Las Ve-gas. He used to teach her whlli

i setting her hair. Allison learnedr her routines while her hair wasdrying.”

A girl who looked enough like; Marilyn Monroe to be her iden-

[ tided herself as Fay Lafayette.! She was having her hair done

1 at night because the next day

; she had a dramatic lesson, a' singing lesson and a dancing

r lesson. The Matthews Salon• gets mostly youngsters like Fay.

! Hardly any stars. One Metro-• politan Opera diva quit coming> because she couldn’t have a
