Whispers of Faith …

Dear Friends: Have you ever wondered why Jesus chose fishermen as his first disciples? Many explanations have been given. John A. Sanford, an Episcopalian priest/psychologist, says that a fish is the symbol of what is swimming around in our inner depths: possibilities, riches, expectations, potentialities, combinations, creativities hidden from our eyes because they are swimming in the dark - silent, mysterious, and unfortunately unseen. The disciples are called fishers because, once confronted with Jesus, they fished those possibilities up from within themselves and helped others to that realization. Jesus feeds the crowd around him with fish; he fries fish for the disciples at the breakfast he eats with them after his resurrection, and he eats some to prove that he isn’t a ghost. In the earliest African communities Jesus was symbolized as a fish, the symbol for the totality of our inner possibilities brought to light by Jesus. Julius Africanus wrote: “God’s well produces a continuous flood of water, a stream in which there is one fish, caught on a divine hook, feeding the whole of humanity.” It is in the presence of Jesus - the Ichthus or “fish” - that all of us can discover who we are. No wonder that fish play such an important role not only in the life of Jesus, but also in the life of so many Christians, who eat fish instead of meat on the days of abstinence during the forty days of Lent. Mysterious, indeed. Symbolism is the matter our dreams are made of. In that matter the “fish” plays an important role. ************************************************************************************ Whole nine yards! The Luyia people of Kenya love to tell stories. When a story is told, it always has a deeper meaning than what it simply appears to say on the surface. One such story is the following. There lived a man and woman who were very religious and quite spiritual. Strongly anti-abortion and anti-pornography, they were opposed to all kinds of imaginable social evils. Always cursing, scowling and name calling, they were also very angry and bitter. Very good Christian people the whole nine yards, they prayed daily. One day in prayer, both had a private revelation that Jesus Christ was going to appear to them on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Excited and overwhelmed with joy, they cleaned their entire house. She had her hair done. Wearing their best clothes, they waited patiently and anxiously. At 3 p.m. the doorbell rang. They opened the front door only to find a cursing, scowling, angry, name calling and bitter man. Surprised, they asked, “Who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing at our door?” The man said, “It’s three o’clock; weren’t you expecting me?” Taken aback, they said, “You can’t be the real Jesus Christ!” The man responded, “You’re absolutely right. I’m not the real Jesus Christ, but I am the Jesus Christ that others see in you!” ************************************************************************************ Three guys die together in an accident and go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here in heaven: don’t step on the ducks.” So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first guy accidentally steps on one. St. Peter immediately appears on the scene, accompanied by the ugliest woman the guy ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly woman!” The next day, the second guy accidentally steps on a duck, and again St. Peter appears, and with him is another extremely ugly woman. He chains them together with the same admonishment: they will be bound for eternity. The third guy has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly woman, is very, VERY careful where he steps. He manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to him with the most gorgeous woman he has ever laid eyes on, a very tall, tan, curvaceous, sexy blonde. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word. The guy remarks, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?” The woman replies, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck.” ************************************************************************************ Religion Napoleon abandoned his religion. He even fought against the Church. Towards the close of his life, however, he had an altar built in his room and had the Blessed Sacrament on it. One day, his atheistic doctor scoffed at this saying, “Well, going back to all the old woman’s stuff?” Napoleon responded, “All manner of fools I could bear with in my life, but stupidity I could never stand. Get out!” ************************************************************************************ Orester Brownson, noted American philosopher, tried many religions in his early life. When finally he became a Catholic, his friends wondered: “Where will Brownson jump next?” Brownson’s apt response was, “I have been jumping until I found something firm to stand on; now that my feet rest on the rock of Peter they have found solid ground, and I am satisfied.”
