• By measuring nutrient contentsand flow, the actual load isdetermined. In this way you canadd a feed-forward control tothe usual feedback control.This is beneficial in cases with rapidly changing loads.

Nutrient measurement in thesewerage system• Measurement is carried out in

rainy weather. After the firstnutrient-saturated flush, thealmost pure rainwater is oftenlead directly to the recipient,since pure water can upset thesedimentation process andlead to loss of active biomass.

• Sewage water from variousareas often contains differentloads. By measuring nutrientand flow, sewage from severalareas can be mixed in order tokeep the plant load constant.

Outlet measurement• For monitoring purposes anddocumenting the quality of thetreatment. Regulating Authoritiesoften demand measurements ofall parameters: oxygen, ammoni-um, phosphate and nitrate.Taxes are often based on themeasured values.

Oxygen profile measurement• The nitrification basin is divi-ded into four reactors. AnEVITA® OXY transmitter ineach reactor controls the airflow of the four air diffusermodules. The result is energysavings in the range of 30-40percent as well as up to 30 per-cent higher plant capacity.

Maintenance – a Matter of MinutesPerhaps the paramount benefit of the EVITA® OXYdissolved oxygen transmitter is minimum maintenance:• Calibration is limited to only three times a year.• No need for regeneration. The sensor is simply

replaced – in less than 5 minutes every 2-3 years.• Unique transmitter design, including four fins,

makes it self-cleaning.• Cleaning is done by wiping the sensor with a cloth

– three times a year.

Calibration – a Twist of Your HandThe EVITA® OXY transmitter is calibrated automa-tically. Thanks to the one of a kind TILTCAL®

calibrating procedure, all it takes is a helping hand:• Tilt the transmitter: a tilt switch will initiate the

calibration routine. Done after 5 minutes.• Forget about calibrating the zero point: the low cost

disposable OXY 1100 sensor is exchanged beforezero-point calibration becomes necessary.

• Repeat calibration three times a year, and yourEVITA® OXY transmitter remains as accurate asthe day you installed it.

No Regeneration: Fast ReplacementAs is the case with all dissolved oxygen meters,EVITA® OXY 1100 sensors have a limited operating

life. However, these sensors require no messy regene-ration: no electrode cleaning – no fiddling withgaskets and chemicals. You simply replace the lowcost disposable OXY 1100 sensor. Danfoss has madethe whole process so simple:• The sensor’s lifetime is monitored, alerting you the

moment replacement is required.• Unscrew the collar that holds the sensor in place.• Insert the new sensor. Done in 5 minutes – with no

Ensures maintenance-free measurement for a long time

How it works• The carrier (water) is pumped across an ion filter. • The ions migrate to the carrier until the quantity of

ions in the carrier is equal to the quantity in theliquid to be measured.

• Reagents are added.• The mixing of liquids results in a colour change.• The colour intensity, depending on the concentration,

is measured by a photometer, and the measurementis transformed into an electrical signal. This signalis displayed on the USC signal converter.

• The waste liquid is pumped to a sealed waste bag inthe reagent container.

Handling signals from EVITA® OXY or EVITA®

INSITU transmitters is as simple and user-friendly asthe measurement process itself. Flexibility is key,based on three different versions of the USC univer-sal signal converter, all sharing a common platform:

• USC 5000: a basic cost effective signal converter,enabling digital HART® communication with onetransmitter. It features a user-friendly display andkeypad as well as a built-in air pressure transducerwhich automatically compensates the oxygen read-ing for installation altitude and barometric changes.The converter has one current output (4-20 mA)for auxiliary equipment.

• USC 6000: a high performance converter for onetransmitter. Thanks to two current outputs it offers

both primary and secondary measuring parameters:typically oxygen/nitrate/ammonium/orthophosphate contents are the primary value, while temperatureor time to change reagents are the secondary values.Moreover, the USC 6000 comes with three pro-grammable relay outputs for e.g. alarm, limits or setpoints.

• USC 7000: a top of the range multidrop signalconverter, able to communicate with up to 15transmitters on the same two-wire HART® bus,whether EVITA® OXY or EVITA® INSITU. Thedevice comes with four current outputs and fiverelay outputs. This solution is extremely cost-saving for applications with many transmitters, butonly requiring one signal converter. Not only areinitial costs reduced; simpler wiring cuts downinstallation time substantially.

USC signal converters communicate digitally withthe connected transmitters via a standardizedHART® protocol. All it takes is a two-wire cable,making installation really easy.

Irrespective of type, all USC signal converters havethe same logical menu structure. So if your demandfor functions increases, an upgrading from e.g. USC6000 to USC 7000 will mean no surprises regardingoperation. Moreover, the replacement is performedsimply by loosening two screws.

Modular FlexibilityPredicting the communication protocol of the futureis risky business. That is why Danfoss equipped itsUSC signal converters with a module option, offeringyou the following flexibility:• You can choose the communication module that fits

your needs today and change it later when new pro-tocols are developed.

• Individual modules with different communicationprotocols can be mounted in the USC 6000/7000signal converters simply by clicking them onto thebottom.

The USC 6000/7000 signal converters are availablewith a TMS (Tele Metric System) option module.This wireless monitoring module includes an embed-ded cellular phone, working with the GSM networkand enabling the transmission of alarm/error mes-sages in a SMS format to up to four mobile phones.Among the obvious receivers are plant managers,electricians and Danfoss.

Service Out Of The OrdinaryEVITA® OXY/EVITA® INSITU transmitters utili-zing the TMS option take a Danfoss service contractsteps ahead of traditional service contracts regardingmonitoring, backup and security. With a TMS module mounted in the bottom of the USC signal converter and a built-in antenna, you getthe following advantages:• An error is immediately forwarded by SMS or

e-mail to Danfoss – and up to three other mobilephones of your choice. The service can be cancel-led when you are off-duty.

• In many cases errors can be corrected via the phonewithout the call of a service engineer.

• Thanks to an EVITA® Dialog PC software you areable to manipulate a transmitter, e.g. initiate cali-bration, change calibration intervals, change mea-suring range etc.

• In case of power failure, the TMS sends a messageto the programmed phones (due to battery back-up). This feature is useful for meters in farawaypumping stations in the sewerage system.

• The TMS adjusts itself to the actual GSM networkthanks to a built-in real time clock which e.g. auto-matically updates at Daylight Saving Time chang-es. Consequently, all messages are accompanied bythe correct indication of time – irrespective of thedomicile of the meter.

• One single TMS module is able to monitor up to 15EVITA® OXY/EVITA® INSITU transmitters viathe HART® bus.

Oxygen control isn’t just oxygen control. The more accurate you measure, the better your aerationcontrol. That is why Danfoss recommends oxygen profile control:

Simple oxygen control systemThe reactor is equipped with one oxygen transmitternear the inlet. The transmitter controls the speed ofthe blower by a frequency converter with a built-inPID controller. The dissolved oxygen contents arecorrectly measured close to the transmitter, but thefarther away from it, the greater the fluctuations. Theconsequences are: • When the oxygen contents are too high, energy for

running the aerators is wasted. • When the oxygen contents are too low, the treat-

ment capacity of the reactor is insufficient.

Advanced Oxygen Profile Control SystemThe reactor is equipped with four oxygen transmit-ters situated in different positions. Each transmittercontrols a valve – each supplying air to the bottomaerators in the four sections of the reactor. The air issupplied by an blower which is controlled by a fre-quency converter with a built-in PID controller. Apressure transmitter measures the air pressure.Consequently, the oxygen contents are much morestable throughout the reactor – saving up to 30-40percent energy and achieving up to 30 percent highercapacity.
