• This is also called the Era of Egalitarianism
• Ghana’s independence was accompanied by a series of structural changes in the economy of Ghana.
• The idea in this era was the even development of accommodation across the country.

• Restructuring of the national economy covered a series of policy measures.
• After independence, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah started establishing accommodation facilities across the country.
• Hotels and Catering Rest Houses were built all over Ghana.

• In 1962, the State Hotels Corporation (SHC) was established.
• In 1965, SHC was split into State Hotels Corporation & Ghana Tourist Corporation (GTC).
• The first tourism policy was formulated in 1972
• In 1973, NRC Decree 224 split the GTC into Ghana Tourist Control Board (GTCB) & Ghana Tourist Development CompanyCompany
• GTDC replaced the SHC

Era of Stagnation (1977-1986)• This can be liken to the middle ages…
• Demand for hotel accommodation fell so low such that some collapsed.
• In 1977, the GTDC was changed to Ghana Tourist Board (GTB).– Monitoring accommodation facilities– Regulate hospitality services– Licensing hotels– Classifying hotels into stars

Era of Rejuvenation (1987-to Date)Era of Rejuvenation (1987-to Date)• From 1987, the hotels in Ghana started growing
again.
• Accommodation in Ghana became fully-fledged and very competitive and as such realised a phenomenal growth.
• Unfortunately, the government drew away from the management in State owned hotels
• Hotels were placed on divestiture (sold)
• Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act came to liberalise foreign investment

• After 2000, hotels have developed. We now have all star ratings (1 star- 5 star)
