Introduction

General Certificate of Education (GCE) To obtain an AS (GCE Advanced Subsidiary Level) certificate, a student must take two or three AS Unit Tests. The points gained in these tests may then be exchanged for an AS grade and certificate. To obtain a full A Level (GCE Advanced Level) certificate, a student must take two or three A2 Unit Tests. The points gained in these tests may then be exchanged for an A level grade and certificate. Results for the General Certificate of Education AS and Advanced Level are published in six grades. A*(only applicable at A2), A, B, C, D & E are all pass grades; below this is U (unclassified). General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Nine pass grades are awarded: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Additionally, this year, students will still be awarded grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F & G for Business Studies, DT: Graphics, DT: Product Design, DT; Textiles and ICT. Candidates failing to reach the minimum required standard are awarded grade U (unclassified). Students and their parents should be aware that many future opportunities, for example sixth form study, entry to higher education and certain careers, require pass grades from the 9 to 4 or A* to C range. Examination Bodies In this school we use four different examining bodies: AQA Assessment and Qualifications Alliance WJEC EDUQAS EDX Pearson Edexcel OCR Oxford, Cambridge and RSA. These abbreviations will occur in the timetable section of this Guide. Cost of Examination Entries Entry is made by each subject department and the school pays the fee for that entry. Students who accept entry for any subject and then fail to complete the coursework or fail to attend any examination sitting will be expected to repay the entry fee to the school through the Bursar unless a medical certificate is produced or some other acceptable reason given in writing.

Before the Examination Period

Personal Organisation 1 Both students and parents are asked to make themselves familiar with the arrangements contained in this Guide,

especially with the days and times of their examinations. Candidates may be given leave of absence from school for preparation and revision at times when there is no examination. It is important that this time is spent profitably.

2 Be sure that you have completed all the necessary coursework, projects and practical work on time. Failure to do

so will result in `absence' or `no work' being recorded. You will then be given zero for that component and your grade will be severely reduced.

3 From the official timetable and the entry statements you will receive, be sure you know on which day and at what

time of day each of your examinations take place. Keep these statements carefully. 4 Become familiar with the school's centre number and your candidate number. Write your candidate number here:

CENTRE NO 6 5 4 0 1

CANDIDATE NO

5 If you are due, according to the timetable, to take examinations in different subjects at the same time, report this at

once to the Data Manager in writing. 6 Ensure that you have read and understand the Warning to Candidates at the back of this booklet. It applies

to all public examinations and is published jointly by all the Examination Bodies.

7 Candidates are reminded that any form of plagiarism during teacher-assessed work (typically controlled assessment and investigations) is strictly forbidden and is likely to end in disqualification. All sources of information are to be properly acknowledged and the advice of your teacher must be followed.

Timetable 1 The letters preceding the exam code in the timetable correspond to the following: A2 A2 Examination (GCE) AS Advanced Subsidiary Examination (GCE) G GCSE FSMQ Free Standing Mathematics Qualification 2 Whilst every effort has been made to reproduce correctly extracts from separate documents, the school cannot be

held responsible for any inaccuracy in the timetable that follows. The onus is on each candidate to check the individual entry slips issued to them.

3 If you are due to sit two or more examinations at the same time in the same subject, these will be taken

consecutively. 4 You should also realise that timings cannot be guaranteed to be exact as delays can occur because of extra time

needed to prepare the hall, large numbers of candidates etc. It usually takes at least ten minutes to clear the hall after an examination, so candidates should bear these points in mind when making travel arrangements.

5 Please realise that you will not be allowed to leave early, for example to catch a 'bus or train, as your departure

could disturb other candidates utilising the full time allowance.

Page 4: EXAMINATIONS GUIDE 2018 · 2018-04-24 · Before the Examination Period Personal Organisation 1 Both students and parents are asked to make themselves familiar with the arrangements

Leave of Absence Monday 7 May and Monday 28 May are public holidays. Half term will be from Tuesday 29 May until Friday 1 June inclusive. Year 11 From Monday 4 June students are required to attend for examinations and timetabled revision sessions only,

although study at home is expected. During Half Term and the Saturdays prior to examinations there will be a programme of revision lessons that students are strongly encouraged to attend. Full details will be published later.

Year 12 Year 12 GCE courses will continue until all AS examinations in a particular subject have taken place. All year

12 students will start A2 courses on Monday 11 June (There will be a break from Monday 25 to Friday 29 June for Work Experience).

Year 13 Lessons for Year 13 students will continue until all examinations in the subject have taken place.

During the Examination Period

1 Most written examinations will take place in the Sports Hall, although small-entry subjects may be transferred to the Hall or a classroom. Practical examinations will be in the appropriate subject rooms and oral and aural examinations will be conducted in smaller rooms.

2 Ensure you know when examinations are due to start and allow plenty of time to get to school - do not arrive in a

flustered state - but if for any reason you are delayed telephone the school (01243 552055). Your examination script may not be accepted if you arrive after 9.30am for morning examinations or after 2.00pm for afternoon examinations.

3 If you are ill and cannot attend, the school should be telephoned and a doctor's note obtained. This should be given,

or posted, to the Data Manager together with a note stating for which examinations you were affected. Similarly, if you are ill immediately before or during an examination, you should bring a note from your doctor. A copy of this may have to be sent to the examination authority.

4 If you miss an examination you will be held responsible for the entry fee for that subject unless a medical

certificate is produced or acceptable reason given in writing. 5 School uniform will be worn by Year 11 students in examinations. Year 12 and Year 13 students will also dress

appropriately. The school will exercise its authority to bar from the examination room anyone who does not comply. 6 Talking is not allowed in the examination room before, during or after an examination. 7 Your place will be marked by a card bearing your name and examination number. (This card will be collected early

in the examination so leave it visible on the corner of your desk). 8 Although it is not mandatory, you may take your `Statement of Entry’ into the examination provided that it has not

been written on. 9 Candidates may use a calculator at any time unless their use is prohibited. Calculators with any of the following

facilities are not allowed in the examination room:

data banks

dictionaries,

language translators

retrieval of text or formulae

QWERTY keyboards

built-in symbolic algebra manipulations

symbolic differentiation or integration

non-numerical functions or information Calculators must

be of a size suitable for an examination desk

be free from formulae – calculator lids are not to be brought into the exam room

have their own integral power supply

be silent in operation

be in proper working order

be cleared of any information or programs stored in the calculator's memory Candidates may

use graphical calculators (unless prohibited)

use programmable calculators without prepared programs Candidates may not

borrow a calculator during an examination

seek advice on the use or repair of a calculator

bring instruction manuals or printed cases into the examination 10 You must write in black ink, unless it is customary in the subject to do otherwise, eg. pencil for diagrams, colours for

maps. Pencil cases are not permitted in the examination room, unless they are transparent. An A4 size plastic ring binder pocket would be acceptable for containing pens, statements of entry etc.

11 Correcting fluid/paper is not allowed. Food, sweets and other consumables are not permitted in the examination

room. Still water only may be brought into the exam room provided that it is in a clear plastic bottle without a label. It may not be stored on the desk. Watches with an audible alarm must be switched off or left at home and all wrist watches must be removed and placed on your desk..

12 iPods, smart watches, mobile telephones or MP3/4 players may not be brought into the examination room

under any circumstances. No potential technological/web enabled sources may be brought into the examination room. The penalty for a student found in possession of a telephone or similar device is likely to be disqualification from the subject in which the offence occurred. Should a telephone ring during an examination the penalty is more severe. Students guilty of these offences may not be accepted for entry to any future examinations.

13 Any form of graffiti on desks in the examinations room is strictly forbidden. A student guilty of writing on or marking

school property in any way will be excluded from the examination and charged the full cost of cleaning and repair of damage.

After the Examination Period

By the End of June 1 The Head of Sixth Form or Head of Year 11 will have given you a leaving form, which must then be completed

according to instructions you will receive.

2 Your teachers will inform you how text books and other materials should be returned. This may be:

Immediately after the last exam in each subject.

During the final revision session in each subject.

On the day of the Leavers’ Service (see below).

At any time during lessons.

Page 6: EXAMINATIONS GUIDE 2018 · 2018-04-24 · Before the Examination Period Personal Organisation 1 Both students and parents are asked to make themselves familiar with the arrangements

3 By the “leaving date” (see below) you must:

Have returned all books and loans.

Have paid any debts you have.

Have your “leavers” form completely signed. 4 The process of handing in books and equipment, payment of any monies owed, signing of leaving form etc. should

be completed as soon as possible after the last examination in each subject (according to departmental instructions) but must be completed no later than 26 June for year 11 and Thursday 28 June for year 13.

5 There will be a Year 11 celebration Mass and a Year 13 Leavers’ Service, which we expect students to attend.

Precise details will follow later. 6 Students are required to adhere to these deadlines as arrangements for the following year have to be made and

teachers may not be available to sign the form. Results 1 By the end of June you must give the Data Manager one envelope addressed to yourself, stamped first class.

(Standard 22cm by 11cm envelope is requested.) Any student taking both GCE and GCSE examinations will need to leave an additional first class stamped and addressed envelope.

2 Your results may be collected on Thursday 16 August (GCE Advanced, AS Level and unit tests) or Thursday 23

August (GCSE). The school will be open at 9.00am - 10.00am AS/A2 and 10.00am – 11.00am for GCSE. Members of staff will be available on these days to help you with any immediate queries. Please note that results will not be given by telephone, facsimile machine or electronic mail under any circumstances.

3 Those who choose not to collect their results in person will have their envelopes posted soon after 11.00am and

should, therefore, expect to receive them on Friday 17 or Friday 24 August respectively. If you do not hand in the necessary envelope you cannot expect to receive your results until the school re-opens for the Autumn Term on Tuesday 4 September. Results will only be issued by the methods outlined above.

Access to Scripts A scheme exists whereby students may have access to their written GCE and GCSE scripts. Photocopies of GCE scripts will also be available as a priority service. A fee is charged for these services and details of these procedures will be given to candidates in their results envelopes. Certificates 1 Certificates are not dealt with until they are received towards the end of the Autumn Term. You will receive a

request to notify the school of arrangements for collection at this time.

2 Please reply promptly to the request. It is essential that you inform us of any change of address since leaving school.

3 Certificates will not be given to those who fail to notify the school in good time of their desired method of collection.
