Principal’s Report
HIGH SCHOOL
Newsletter | Term 1 Week 8| 22 March 2019
What a wonderful South Sydney High School Open Day! Once again for the fourth year running, it was a true
indication of the collaboration which exists at our school. There were over 100 students who volunteered their
time and nearly all staff in attendance. There were over 600 visitors who came to see the school in action.
Classrooms and outdoor areas were open for everyone to see quality teaching and learning in action in all
areas of school life.
Our amazing Science staff attended the Open Day to showcase Science at SSHS to the local community. We
opened a laboratory classroom with lots of science activities involving magnets, microscopes, chemical
reactions, generating electricity, forces and more. The ever popular Science Shows showcased some of the
more spectacular demonstrations students see in class including elephant's toothpaste, hydrogen balloon
explosion and a metho rocket. We also had some activities running in one of the new outdoor classrooms to
showcase this brand new space (microscopes, solar energy kits, spinner drops). We would like to thank our
wonderful student volunteers who did an amazing job from helping us to set up, pack up, talking to parents
and children, running activities and really showing their passion for Science.
Technological and Applied Studies were kept busy all day. In the Commercial Kitchen, the TAS faculty
supervised students who assisted visitors to ice freshly baked cupcakes and enjoy delicious sandwiches
prepared by our Hospitality students. Over in the Industrial Technology workshops the air was alive with
excitement as Year 9 and 10 students used their problem solving skills to build a tool carrier.
Over in the library, Mr Chadwick led our talented Code Club students in demonstrations of their expertise and
answered many questions about all things technological at South Sydney High School. Interest was intense
with probing questions about opportunities and curriculum for junior and senior students.
The CAPA faculty were hard at work adding to the cultural richness of the day with a diverse music program
performed by the Music students and our talented Music staff in the F Block courtyard. An interactive studio in
Visual Arts was incredibly popular, and allowed our visitors to create using clay and contribute to a collaborate
art work led by the ever-creative Mr Baggaley. Students displayed their talents, led by Ms Healy, as they
showed focus and artistic flair in the creation of lino prints. A number of Year 9 Drama students spent the day
wandering amongst the crowd dressed in fabulous Commedia dell’arte costumes while many of our visitors
tried on the masks in the Drama room.
The English, Drama, LOTE and EALD faculty presented
several displays and activities around the school. Both
fiction and non-fiction writing samples were on display
from the junior school, showcasing some excellent student
writing from a range of writing competitions and school
activities including "Book in a Day", "What Matters" and
the "Youth Writing competition". Also displayed were
senior writing and performance projects including
Extension English major works, student speeches and multi
-modal presentations. There was also a display of
contemporary and classic texts studied at SSHS in stages
4-6. Information about the school's EALD (English as an
additional dialect) program was provided by Ms Kambos.
Ms Tilby ran interactive sessions on problem solving and
provided information about Tournament of the minds. Ms
Giordano and her students led interactive Spanish learning
games and displayed a range of Spanish language texts and
posters.
The HSIE Faculty put on a display of current texts used across Stages 4-5 as well as an impressive display of
student worked produced this year. The Commerce Product assignments were a particular standout as
students had created their own product for marketing. Open Day 2019 for the HSIE faculty was a collaborative
effort between teachers and students.
Our information hub was coordinated by a group of passionate, motivated and enthusiastic students from Year
7, 8 and 9 who were excellent ambassadors for HSIE and SSHS, answering questions on all aspects of life at
SSHS. They displayed a series of interactive activities used in class to develop students’ skills and knowledge in
History and Geography. Some students helped visitors explore archaeology through the mini dig whilst others
organised and directed the online interactive task "Make a Mummy". We also had a team of roving
Year 10 and 11 vox poppers, who gathered public feedback and quizzed unsuspecting community members
with a series of Geography, History and Commerce-based general knowledge questions.
Drama students performed around the school while visitors had the opportunity to work with Ms De Paor on
some drama activities, trying on costumes from the school supply.
Open day activities in Maths and PE were once again strong this year. The hands-on water and volume puzzle run by Mr Stamell was popular amongst parents and students, many successfully predicting the movements of amounts of water from one pyramid into an equivalent prism. Mr Armanios showed his fine chess skills, and some of our talented students participated in numerous games of giant chess against some very talented opponents from our local primary schools. Parents and their children were also given the opportunity to test their problem solving and thinking skills in the “escape room” run by Ms Rivett and Mr Yasaman.
Mr Wood, Mr Wagg, Ms Jarman and Ms Dawson kept everyone active with numerous sporting activities around the school. Trolley handball and indoor slide hockey were all a hit with multiple games simultaneously being played in the indoor gym.
The P&C worked hard on the BBQ and answered many questions about the school. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents eager to help and hard at work. There were displays about our Beacon Opportunity Programs, Duke of Edinburgh program and our many student leadership programs and extra curricula opportunities.
A huge thank you to Kelloggs for their generous donation to the school which enabled us to provide a jumping
castle and gelato carts for our day.
Ms Jarman displayed her exceptional organisational skills as she supervised our balloon stand for most of the
day.
Our School Captains James Grimshaw and Amta Audesh ably led the hall proceedings and along with our
prefects, SRC students and student volunteers, to great acclamation, led visitors on tours of the school. Our
Year 8 student speaker, Luisa Prochnow spoke very confidently about her experiences in our Enrichment
stream and has a great public speaking career ahead of her.
I would also again, like to acknowledge our staff, students and parents who gave up their Saturday to support
the school. There were many happy faces, smiling parents, enthusiastic staff and students. We look forward to
your continued support in spreading the good word about South Sydney High School.
Kind regards
Cathy Walton
Principal
Last week at our P&C meeting, Mr Askounis and Ms Hasking presented an analysis of the school’s NAPLAN
data. These presentations are always informative and provide some good insights into both the testing
process and how our school is performing. As a P&C, we do like to hold presentations for parents as a regular
feature – if there is a topic or an issue you would like to hear more about, please let us know via the email
account and we will endeavour to organise an appropriate speaker
We are holding an Election Day BBQ & cake stall at tomorrow’s state election. Choose our school as your
polling place and come and support our school by buying your ‘democracy sausage’ (or a bacon and egg roll!)
Please consider helping out for an hour – we still are in need of volunteers, particularly between 12-2 (which is
likely to be a busy time). If you cannot help out on the day, perhaps you may be able to donate a cake or a
slice to the cake stall (these can be dropped into the front office on Friday afternoon prior to 3.15, or to the
stall itself on the day).
As part of the fundraising effort, we are also holding a raffle, with tickets being sold at the BBQ. We have
sourced some fabulous prizes –
Tickets will be sold at the BBQ @ $2 each.

Gifted, Talented & Enrichment
South Sydney Short Film Makers
On Wednesday 27th March our school will become a film studio for students from the Year 8 Drama & Film
Makers’ Ensemble who will join our SSEP students to ‘make a film in a day.’ These students are already coming
to SSCIM Club on a Thursday to fine tune their film making ideas.
Our school has been offered an opportunity to get involved in a Virtual Reality film being made by NIDA
students at South Sydney during the school holidays. Expect to hear more about this exciting development in
the coming weeks.
ICAS Exams
Parents of Enrichment stream students should have already received ICAS letters outlining the arrangements
for ICAS examinations this year. Payment along with a signed letter from parents needs to be submitted to the
Student Office before the end of Term 2.
Senior SSCIM Camp, Cockatoo Island, May 8th – 10th 2019
Planning is well underway for this year’s senior SSCIM Camp. This will take place on Cockatoo Island early in
Term 2. Students wishing to attend should come to SSCIM Club on a Thursday and discuss their planned
projects with Ms de Paor and Mr Wagg. Permission notes need to be returned and $180 paid to the student
office.
Chess Team & Workshop 13th March
Come and visit our SSCIM meetings on a Thursday at lunchtime and see our students busily discovering who
the chess enthusiasts are so that we can support them to represent our school in chess competitions that are
coming up next term. Many of our chess enthusiasts joined our SSEP students on Wednesday 13th March for a
Chess Masterclass with the Sydney Academy of Chess.
Science News Year 7 Water Purification Challenge
Our Year 7 students are currently exploring a range of techniques used to separate the components of some
common mixtures. After exploring the theory behind effective filters, 7 Yellow students were issued a
challenge to design and build a water purification system.
Professor Tim Flannery Talk
South Sydney High School were really lucky to have a visit from Professor Tim Flannery, eminent scientist and
2007 Australian of the Year, to give a presentation on the need for science and innovation as we address the
challenges of climate change. Students from Year 9-11 attended the talk and were able to ask questions about
some of the innovative new technologies and directions in carbon absorption.
Dressed for Success On Tuesday 12th March Year 10 & 11 girls were invited to attend a special event ‘Dressed for Success’. The aim
of the excursion is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about personal presentation and how to
dress for work or a job interview. The girls attended a workshop in which discussion centred on colour
co-ordinating business attire and choosing accessories to suit the individual.
The girls were then invited to choose their outfit with the assistance of individual stylist. The students were
then able to take the chosen business attire home, which included co-ordinated shoes and jewellery.
A very exciting event … as every girl was Dressed for Success!

Careers Adviser
On 26th February our Year 11 Retail Students were given a tour of the South Sydney High School Canteen to
investigate how it meets WHS Work Safe standards. What we discovered is that Nick, the canteen proprietor
runs a tight ship! Having won awards from the NSW Canteen Association and being very proud of his
business- he was very happy to let the class through. Flying colours was his score. Thank you Nick for letting
our students witness excellent WHS practices.

Sports @ SSHS….So Far! It has been an incredibly busy start to the sporting calendar in 2019 with events being held at school, zone and
regional levels. Here is a snapshot of all that has happened and the success stories we’ve had so far…
Volleyball
The boy’s team experienced the highs and lows of sport in a short space of time winning their round one
knockout game in comprehensive fashion against GRC Peakhurst. The thrill of victory was short lived however
as their round two opponents Tempe HS defeated the SSHS team in emphatic style.
The girl’s team were involved in a thriller in their round one game, despite eventually losing to Tempe HS also.
For the majority of the girls it was their first ever formal volleyball match against a team who possessed far
more experience. This did not phase the SSHS team who produced an exceptional performance based on team
work and positive communication to narrowly be beaten in three sets with the final set decided 15-13.
Well done to both teams
Cricket
It has been a number of years since we have been able to put a cricket team into the Combined High School’s
KO but this year after some enthusiastic petitioning from the Year 9 and Year 10 boys we did.
A tough draw resulted in our opponents being Engadine HS who have experienced success in this sport in
recent times but for any passing spectator it would not have looked at all like a David and Goliath battle,
instead it was a classic underdog performance from the SSHS boys who produced a cracking performance
which very nearly saw them take down their much fancied opponent. Mr Moreland was so impressed with the
performance that he is already asking for a cricketing centre of excellence to be set up for the 2019/2020
summer.
Zone Gala Day Trials
For the second year in a row SSHS has been at the forefront of facilitating opportunities for our students and
students across the zone to showcase their sporting skills in a competitive, yet friendly way. Once again, our
school hosted both the boy’s soccer, and the boys and girls touch football events. The Zone Gala Day Trials are
designed to do just this; students from across the zone participate in a round robin event from which they can
be selected as Zone Representatives to attend the regional trial in the relevant sport. These days are held for
the sports of Soccer, Netball, Basketball and Touch Football. The following students were successful in being
selected as Zone Representatives.
Rose Jennings Year 12 Touch Football and Soccer Kailani Te Hira Year 10 Touch Football and Basketball Luti Maile Year 10 Touch Football and Soccer Eden Reweti Year 7 Touch Football Jessica Hausman Year 10 Soccer

Swimming Carnivals
After the cold and wet versions in 2018, Mother Nature blessed us this year for both the School and Zone
Swimming Carnivals, both which were held at Botany Pool.
The school carnival was a wonderful day highlighted by high levels of participation across both the competitive
and novelty events. It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 7 students getting involved, and it was also
great to see our House Captains leading their teams in such an enthusiastic and positive way.
At the zone carnival the students who progressed from the school carnival represented themselves and the
school in exceptional fashion. There were some amazing performances (see below for more) from all of the
swimmers on the day but the most pleasing aspect of the day was the team mentality demonstrated by all of
our students. Led by Ms Lopez; who was team manager on the day, Brendan Wardrop (Year 12), Jessica Zhang
and Jessica Hausman (both Year 10) our team were a well-oiled machine. Every relay team was effectively and
fairly organized; it was wonderful to see everyone being given a chance to swim in the team events on the day.

Regional Team Selections
There have been a number of Sydney East SSA trials held over the past 3-4 weeks, with many more in the pipeline. Already in 2019 we have had some wonderful stories of success for our students gaining selection in these teams. Students selected in these teams represent Sydney East at the relevant State Carnival.

A wrap up on sport thus far would not be complete without highlighting the wonderful performances, and talent, of Frederick Mravec in Year 7 at the zone carnival. Below are the records that Frederick broke on the day. These are just a small sample of his amazing performances. The entire school community is excited to see what Frederick can achieve both this year and in the future.
Mobile Phone Policy
The Department of Education has completed a recent review of
mobile phone use in schools. Whilst mobile phones are not
banned outright at South Sydney High School, we will be
reviewing our current policy as more findings become available.
If your child does bring a phone to school, please ensure that he/
she:
*Keeps their phone in their bag at all times
*Uses their phone in class only when asked to (for educational
purposes) by their teacher
Behaviour Expectations
At South Sydney High School we set high expectations for behaviour and learning for all our students.
It is important that all students are taught what is expected of them and have opportunities to practise these
expected behaviours.
Having clear expectations for behaviour allows South Sydney High School to provide consistency in what we
teach, what we acknowledge and what we expect in terms of student behaviour. This will alow students to
strive to achieve by working to the best of their abilities.
Students are then explicitly taught the expectations, when and where they should be used and what each
expectation looks like and sounds like. We will be facilitating lessons on each of our Behaviour expectations
pictured on the next page throughout all year groups over the next four weeks.
