The works, which include improvements to the pedes- trian pathway from Coral Beach to the mouth of the Rio Verde, a new car park, and a footbridge over and the Gua- daiza River, are being financed jointly by the Junta de Anda- lucía’s ‘Plan Qualifica’ initia- tive and the Town Hall. The construction of the footbridge is now possible af- ter the Town Hall reached an agreement with the commu- nity association of Urbaniza- tion Los Pinos. The Municipal Library in the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre officially opened its newly ex- panded premises to the public on Monday. The two new halls (named 'Antonia Guerrero' and 'María Zambrano'), which have dou- bled the size of the library, in- clude 112 new study places, more than 3,000 new reference books, over 100 new specialist journals, 12 new internet sta- tions, and an international sec- tion. A spokesman for the Library has confirmed that the addi- tional space will also eventu- ally allow for the creation of an extensive digital and paper ar- chive centre for the municipal- ity. The 385 square metre-facili- ties are found on the second floor of the Cultural Centre. Estepona New extension doubles the size of municipal library Estepona ‘City of Knowledge’ gets the green light Following two years of nego- tiations, the Antonia Guer- rero Foundation (which was established to manage the land which was left to the munici- pality by the Nadal-Guerrero family) has reached an agree- ment to start financing the building of the ‘Ciudad del Conocimiento’ (City of Knowl- edge) development, which will be located in the Saladavieja district. Having sold plots of land in La Lobilla area, the Founda- tion now has the resources to move the project forward. The ‘City of Knowledge,’ which has been designed by Manuel Toharia, the director of the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum in Valencia, will be a high-level educational facil- ity focusing particularly on culture, languages, technology and communication. San Pedro Calls for San Pedro tunnel petition The Deputy Mayor of San Pe- dro, Miguel Troyano, has called for local residents to set up a petition demanding the Ministry of Development com- plete the San Pedro Tunnel on schedule, and provide a de- tailed timeline of when each section will be finished. In a statement, Troyano claimed that before the pro- ject was 'paralysed' there were more than 250 workers on site, and now there are just 25. “It is completely inadequate,” he said. Work was halted on the 60 million euro-project in July following cutbacks in central Government funding. This has since been over-turned. The tunnel will allow traffic on the A-7 motorway to run underneath the centre of San Pedro to help ease congestion. Félix Romero, from the Town Hall, says: “Not more than half a month ago, the PSOE held a press conference saying that it would use all the Government’s resources to move this project forward.” In response, the PSOE says the Town Hall is “looking for artificial controversies.” MIGUEL TROYANO.
