TENPIN SLANTSby Joe Lyou

The Professional Bowlers Assn. makes its only California stopthis season when Dave Osborn’s Fountain Bowl host the Denny’sPBA Dick Weber Open Jan. 16-21.

It will be the second year that this event—which honors the latelegendary bowler—is being staged at the 60-lane Orange Countycenter. The defending champion is lefty Jason Couch of Clermont,Fla.

The Dick Weber Open features the “old” format, in which thosesurviving the qualifying round will meet in round-robin match play.ESPN will televise the stepladder finals on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 10a.m., Pacific time.

The old format is popular with spectators because they canwatch all the bowlers in action at the same time during the matchplay. In the head-to-head format, half the field is eliminated aftereach round.

Southern California bowlers are encouraged to support the DickWeber Open, either with their attendance or by participating in theSaturday Pro-Am. Dave Osborn will appreciate it—and if enoughbowlers and spectators turn out, it might convince him to host the3rd annual Dick Weber Open in 2008.

Following the Fountain Bowl stop, the pros head for the Denny’sMotel 6 Classic, Jan. 24-28, at the Strike Zone at Sunset Station, located in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson. It will mark thePBA’s first return to Sin City after an absence of several years.

Remember the good old days when the world-famous ShowboatBowling Center hosted the pros for more than 30 years? Manymemorable tournaments were held at the venerable 106-lane estab-lishment. The Strike Zone hopes to create the same kind of excite-ment.

* * *Speaking of exciting tournaments, there was plenty of it at the

14th annual WWPB (Western Women Pro Bowlers) Mixed DoublesNov. 18-19 at Bill Mossontte’s Mission Hills (Calif.) Bowl.

Most of the excitement was provided by the team of Leanne

Barrette and Ben Laughlin. Not only did they win the $2,200 title—they went wire-to-wire and won by a whopping 397 pins—butthey each shot a 300 in the fifth game of the first qualifying block.

That’s right…a 600 total that, according to Mossontte, equaleda USBC record. “As a matter of fact, it’s only the second time it’sever been done,” he said.

Asked if he would reward Barrette and Laughlin with the tradi-tional $100 for a perfect game, Mossontte replied, “Maybe I’ll givethem $150 each…or even $200 for tying the USBC record.”

Laughlin, a touring pro from Maricopa, Ariz., went on to fire asecond 300. Others shooting 300s were Chris Glossner and JoelReyes, who also had a 299 game.

Finishing second in the tournament were 3-time defendingchamps Wendy Macpherson and Dave Wodka, who shared $1,700.

Barrette and Macpherson were two of five former PWBA cham-pions competing at Mission Hills. The others were Kim Terrell—Barrette’s closest friend who was married on Oct. 7—TennelleMilligan and Dede Davidson.

Terrell bowled with Gary Hulsenberg, who is Barrette’s fiancé.They plan to tie the knot on July 1.

So how come Barrette and Hulsenberg didn’t bowl together inthe tournament? They had hoped to, but wound up with differentpartners because of a last-minute mixup.

“Ben and I had other partners (Tim Brown Jr. and ShannonPluhowsky),” Barrette explained, “but they weren’t able to bowl,so Ben and I got put together. It turned out great.

“Tim and Shannon may not get their partners back,” Barrettesaid with a smile.

Laughlin also said he wanted “to thank Tim and Shannon fordropping us as partners at the last minute.”

As the Great Bard wrote, “All’s well that ends well.”* * *NOTES TO YOU: The Los Angeles Times announced recently

that Station Casinos Inc., which features several bowling centers intheir Las Vegas-based hotels, has agreed to a $4.7-billion buyoutoffer from its founding family, the Fertitta’s, and an affiliate ofColony Capital. Approving the deal were Chief Executive FrankFertitta and President Lorenzo Fertitta, who are expected to remainat Station Casinos Inc. In fact, no major personnel changes areplanned…

From Yahoo News on the Internet, a recent news release stated

that Esther Medley of Centralia, Wash., who is 94 and legally blind, rolled a 244 game. Medley’s 86-year-old husband, Ralph, lines herup on the lanes and tells her which pins are left standing after herfirst ball. Medley had eight strikes in the 244 she rolled in a seniorleague at Fairway Lanes in Centralia. The Medleys have been bowl-ing in the league since 1979…

And talking about senior bowlers, Frank Kietz, the longtimehistorian and columnist for the California Bowling News, was to befeted at his 90th birthday party on Saturday, Dec. 16 at Forest Lanesin the south Orange County community of Lake Forest. Actually,Frank’s birthday is on Dec. 23, but it’s so close to Christmas thatfamily members opted to hold the party one week earlier. A largecrowd was expected to attend…Kietz, in spite of his years, is stillvery active. The former president of the Bowling Writers Assn. ofAmerica continues to write about the sport he loves, he bowlsseveral times a week, and he’s very popular in senior social circles. That means he has a lot of blue-haired ladies chasing after him…

First Place $5,000In Forest LanesOpen Doubles

LAKE FOREST — The win-ter session of the Open Doublesstarts January 9, 2007 at ForestLanes with a possible first placeof $5,000. The league bowlsTuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. andwill run until May 22, 2007 (20weeks). An optional singlestournaments will run in conjunc-tion with the league with a firstplace prize of $1,000.

It’s recommended that yourdoubles team be capable of av-eraging at least 380 to be com-petitive. The league is not sanc-tioned and book averages are notestablished. The league formatwill be the same as the fall ses-sion which is position night eachweek and you bowl three onegame matches against three dif-ferent opponents each week. There is point money and placemoney for those in the rolloffs.

This is not like any otherleague you have ever bowled. One game you’re bowlingagainst a team and the next gameyou’re rooting for them. You canwin all three matches and notwin total pins. Likewise, youcould lose all three matches andwin the two points for totalpins. The constant twist andturns makes this the most excit-ing, competitve league around.

National DeafBowling News

by Connie MarchioneThanks to many writers and

friends who emailed and evenmailed their congratulations to mefor my election to USBC Hall ofFame. I still can not believe it andthanks to a great writer Joe Lyoufor his TenPin Slants columnabout me.

I did not even know I wasnominated and it was not easygetting in it. For these who wantto know something about thisUSBC Hall of Fame, I am writinga small primer on it.

THE USBC HALL OF FAME,it’s history, requirements and elec-tion. Since ABC and WIBC mergedinto USBC, USBC took over bothABC and WIBC Halls of Fame andchanged to one USBC Hall of Famehonoring both men and womenbowlers.

It may surprise you that ABCHall of Fame is founded in 1941as the third oldest Hall of Fameshrine in US after baseball (1936)and golf (1940). In 1941 elevenmen entered in the Hall of Famein the first induction ceremonies.

The USBC Hall of Fame isgoverned by a Board of Directorsmade up by representatives of theHall, USBC and the Bowling Writ-ers Association of America. TheHall has committees that meetannually - Veterans, MeritoriousService and Ballot. The Meritori-ous Service committee studies therecords of nominees who had na-tional impact. The committeeelects those people with 70% re-quired for election.

The Ballot committee studiesthe records of current bowlers andforwards those who qualifies toeither the regular or non-pro na-tional ballot. The first requirementis 20 years participation in theUSBC Championships Tourna-ment.

To be elected the bowler mustreceive 70% of the votes cast.

A second ballot among thehighest three votegetters can beheld with specific requirements tobe elected.

A special Pioneer committeewas formed in 1990 to electpeople who were at the founda-tion of bowling history includingsome who excelled before the be-ginning of ABC in 1895.

For the past several years as along time member of BowlingWriters Association of America,I was on as the ABC regular andnon-pro national ballot voter. Itstopped when USBC took over butnow I am back on the voting list, having voted recently.

Girls Jr. All-Starsby David Gordon

ROSEMEAD – What do Iwant for Christmas? How abouta 30 hour day. I’m sorry that Ican’t complete a full article thisweek, but will have one nextweek updating the month ofDecember. Quickly though,Tabetha Reynolds led the GirlsJr. All-Stars two weeks ago atAMF Bowling Square and Mel-issa Pena took the honors thispast Sunday at Keystone Lanes.

This Sunday we will meet forthe last time of 2006 atBrunswick West Covina Lanes, following the JAT Adult/Jr.Tournament. During that tour-nament we are selling raffle tick-ets for our annual Holiday Bas-ket fund-raiser. These are popu-lar gifts for that last minute per-son.

Then after our bowling, wewill complete a busy day withour Christmas Party, completewith Pot Luck dinner and giftexchange. Please don’t forget. Also, look through all the Christ-mas ads in this paper and see ifyou can find ours.

I do want to congratulateBrent Shern on his first title winin our last tournament at AMFBowling Square. I will have acompleted article in next week’spaper, since I’m taking a vaca-tion to do so.

SED YouthLeadersby Otha Stubblefield

TORRANCE—Youth Lead-ers Travel made its first stop tothe House. Gable House, that is.Scoring wasn’t significantlyhigh, but the bowlers were ex-cited to be there and they had agreat time.

High game and series of theweek go to Jeremy Glover with259-214-201/866. That is theonly 800 that I have to report. The 700 shooters were WilliamJackson 248/796, Eric Kilgore216/732, James Bael 215/727,and Justin Mc Cullin 219/704.

Baker action had Jeremy’steam edging out a victory afterJeremy found out the foul lightsdo work at Gable House. Un-fortunately, Brent was too sickto join us, so we didn’t get achance to congratulate him forwinning JAT Farm Club at AMFBowling Square.

I want to give special thanksto Mickey, Ruth, Darryl and thefine Gable House staff for show-ing us a great time. Hopefullywe’ll be seeing them again, soon.Next week will be our final ses-sion for 2006.

We’ll end it with a doublesession starting at 1:00 at DelRio Lanes. Pizza and sodas areon me, so bring your appetitesand your “A” game.
