Message from ISAE President Molly Hall As I write my first message as your president, let me say how proud and honored I am to serve and give back to ISAE! I’ve benefitted so much from my membership and involvement with ISAE. I was new to association leadership when John Freitag of the AIEC invited me to my first ISAE Annual Conference and Tradeshow in 2003. What I found was a wonderful group of welcoming professionals learning and growing, and encountering many of the challenges I faced. I joined right away, and soon had a network of people to call on and collaborate with, and many industry partners to help with meetings, materials and other needs. ISAE has and continues to be an important part of my association life! I appreciate our ISAE leaders, which include Board members, Committee chairs and staff. We all benefit from their collective work, such as the excellent ISAE Annual Conference, great Lunch and Learn programs, newsletters, website and much more. Whether association or industry partner, our collective interests are served by the work of our Legislative Committee, who along with Randy Witter actively monitor and advocate for ISAE members. In addition to the bill watch list sent earlier to members, ISAE maintains an updated bill status list on its website. Thanks also to the Special Events committee for their work on the exciting, upcoming Summer Session July 30 – Aug. 1, the Scholarship Committee, which raised nearly $800 at the Annual Conference with the popular Wall of Wines, and the other hard-working committees. Committee leaders for 2014 include: Education, co-chaired by Kristen Ball and Laura Richter Legislative, co-chaired by Rob French and Linda Brookhart Development, co-chaired by Eric Klinner and Brian Soady Scholarship, chaired by Deb Jemison Special Events, co-chaired by Kathy Ridley and Merl Lawless Finance, co-chaired by Cheri Breneman and Peter Graham Two committees in particular could use your help: Communication, chaired by Cheri Breneman needs a co-chair and committee members Awards, chaired by Mary Young, also needs a co-chair and committee members. If you are not involved in a committee, don’t wait to be asked. I encourage you to make a small commitment of time that will yield a sizeable reward - an enriching and rewarding experience, not to mention fun!

Alert! Important Information Regarding Unauthorized and

Potentially Fraudulent Phone Calls and /or emails

ISAE has been alerted to an unauthorized solicitation campaign offering reduced hotel rates for national and state association conferences throughout the United States. Persons identifying themselves as representatives of Exhibition Housing Services (EHS) offer to book reduced rate hotel reservations for the conference. They will then ask for credit card information to secure attendee reservations. Our research has shown that those rooms may be later cancelled prior to the conference event without notice to the attendee leaving the attendee without a room and with no refund by EHS. We are uncertain at this point how this company is obtaining mailing lists, but we have verified that the lists are coming from past conferences held by each association that has been targeted. At this point, ISAE recommends that in all of your conference marketing materials and on your websites, that you state the reservation process for your event very clearly. Additionally, we recommend that you notify your members and potential attendees about this scam, and to give them direction if they are contacted by any third party regarding housing for your event. A statement such as “If you are contacted by any third party vendor using our name or the name of our events and offering hotel reservation services at a discount from the group rate, please do not sign anything, unless you have carefully read and understood the terms contained in the small print”. We will continue to monitor this situation, and will keep you informed with any new updates.

It’s much easier to get random things done than it is to get the right things done. Heck, you can cross things off

of your list all day long and still not make much real progress. We’ve become a culture that values busy, and what better way to demonstrate busy-ness that to be constantly adding things to, and checking things off of your to do list. (Raise your hand if you’ve ever done a task not on your to do list and then added it to your to do list so you could cross it off. I’m raising my hand.) But you know that being busy doesn’t always equate to being productive. Youdon’tneedanewapp tomanageyour todo’s,oranew electronic gadget or a new paper-based system or a new softwarepackage.Youneedthreevitalskills. 1. The ability to gain clarity 2. The ability to make choices/prioritize 3. The ability to focus You’llneverrunoutofworkshopstotake, bookstoread, websites to visit, networking events to attend, or emails to handle. All of those tasks have the potential to be a resource to help get things done, grow your business or improve a skill, etc. But at some point you have to stop and choose where you are going to focus your attention.

I’m in the middle of making some significant changes to my business which is exciting and daunting at the same time. Some of these changes require the development of new skills, e.g., podcasting, video production, etc. As leaders of associations, you know all too well what it’s like to be in a constant state of creating more value for your members. Dozens of experts offer products and services that may support the work that needs to be done. Recently, as I considered registering for a webinar that promised to teach a skill that will advance my progress, it occurred to me that this is a merry-go-round that will never stop in order for me to get off and get actual work done. I have to jump -- and so do you. Only when you jump off can you quiet your mind enough to get clarity. It helps to create a list of all the projects you want to complete so you can carefully review them and get clear about which project needs to be a priority in order to achieve a specific goal. Once you’ve gotten clear about which project is at the top of your list, the ability to gain clarity will again advance your progress. Everyprojectismadeupofmanytasks.Youmustgetclearabout all the tasks required to get the project completed. Only then can you prioritize those tasks – which is essentially just

makingchoices.Youaccelerateprogresswhenyoumakechoicesabout what you will do first, second, and so on. Not doing so results in multitasking – which is inefficient and ultimately frustrating. (Many people confuse multitasking with managing multiple projects. Don’t do the former. The process explained in this article will allow you to excel at the latter.) So now you know on which project you are attending to at this moment, and you know what tasks need to be done in what order. Now it’s time to dive in and focus. Maintaining focus long enough to make actual progress is challenging. Especially when you hit a roadblock or a task that is hard for you. Then it’s much easier to pop over to some other project and do the easy parts there. But when you do that, you lose momentum and you’ve set yourself up for procrastination, since that rough patch is unlikely to smooth out just because it was avoided for a time. Outside interruptions affect focus but often we create as many interruptions for ourselves. Have you ever checked email not because you needed to but because you wanted to find something to distract you from the task at the top of your list? We all have! Choose an amount of time that you’ll focus, maybe

15, 25, or 40 minutes and set a timer. Focus like a laser beam until the timer dings and then give yourself a two-minute breather to re-energize. Life and work are busy and that’s not going to change anytime soon. But harnessing the power of these three skills will reduce the stress that results from feeling overwhelmed and catapult your productivity.

The South attacked from the north. And the North attacked from the south. What insights from the battle of Gettysburg are there for businesses?

Consider some basic principles.

Transactions grow up into Transformation As business matures, and competition increases, most products and services become more transactional. Specialized offerings get more competition, which forces everyone to sharpen their pricing, or get some sort of edge. Eventually products become so generic that the market evolves into a “big box store” or morphs into high value offerings. Consider the overrun of Sears by Wal-Mart (transaction) and Nordstrom (transformation). When you want a makeover you do not go to Wal-Mart.YougotoNordstrom’sforyour“transformation”. Think ice cream cones. The grandkids still think soft serve ice cream is great. Not the teenagers. To them, there is something a lot better. They want ice cream, but they also want thousands of choices. The chocolate sprinkles, cherries, Oreo cookie bits and a whole cadre of other choices, all mixed together on a large marble slab that transforms simple ice cream into the Cold Stone Creamery experience.

Transformations are the building blocks for Experiences The single serve ice cream cone may cost you a buck. But the Cold Stone Creamery product doubles, triples, or increases the price paid by a factor of 5 or more. It should. It’s a real experience. The single serve is a transaction. It is a generic product that can be purchased at many locations. But that transformation of marble and ice cream is where you take your date for an experience. Today the consumer is pursuing ever more the experience. Consider the following examples

Transaction .......................... Transformational (the experience)Single Serve Ice Cream Cone ................. Cold Stone CreameryRoller Coaster ............Space Mountain in the Magic KingdomStarbucks Coffee .........................................Sidewalk Café in ParisAssociation Education Event .................. Gettysburg Staff Ride

Staff Ride? What the heck is a Staff Ride? Today a common occurrence is for a group of executives fromXYZCorporation to travel toGettysburg,Pennsylvania. There they find themselves on a bus with an expert in the Civil war. For the next several days, these executives are transported to the various Gettysburg locations where history is narrated by this expert. Woven through the lessons of the good and bad leadership of this battle, the group is taken through their

own leadership challenges in their modern day environment. Discussions occur, similarities debated, plans made while leadership and management are improved. This is a long way from an leadership retreat. It is a major revolution in the traditional day-to-day business, to taking the customer to place where they have not been before. Said Henry Ford, “if I had listened to my customers, I would have built a bigger horse.”

When Businesses go Experiential. People want experiences. They pay big bucks for them because they transform lives quickly and are memorable for a lifetime. The wedding ceremony, graduation, birth of a child and so on. They are anticipated for long periods. Consider the Blue Man Group Concert, those season tickets for your sports team, or a trip to New Orleans or Vegas. They reekofparticipation. YoucanwatchGuyFierionhis TV show: Diner, Drive-ins and Dives, or you can make the pilgrimages to the various featured eating locations and relive the magic. Experiences are so powerful we want to share them with others. The wedding invite, the double date, taking the kids, “now that they are older”, back to Disney World. When your business goes from facilitating the transactions of the sale, to creating customer experiences . . . the businesses of your customers will transform; as will your own organization. Making your efforts more experiential will make sales go up, cost of marketing will decrease, word of mouth buzz will skyrocket, referrals will increase, customer retention improves, and your leadership will grow solid.

How do YOU Create an Business Experience? There are hundreds of elements that go into creating an experience like using authority figures, calories, illumination, and eclectic pursuits with smell, taste and touch. A few to consider:

Raiment Great experiences require a change of raiment, or clothing. It is the wedding dress, the graduation gown, the sports jersey for the big game. What special clothing is involved with your selling event? Logo’d shirts? One business association has their version of the PGA Green Jacket for their board members, although theirs are red. Are you having a golf tournament? Might you have a prize for best attire, worst attire, most creative, etc.?

Sound When one Chamber of Commerce started focusing on outcomes for their members, helping them increase business revenues, they decided to have a theme song. Each of their meetings has the Taking Care of Business rock music playing (Bachman Turner Overdrive to the rescue) in the background as attendees arrive.

Liquid Most experiences have some sort of liquid as part of the... ah... experience. It is the champagne at the wedding, the beer at thegraduation.Youaregoingtocruiseacrosstheliquid, drinkit, surf it, skate across it, partake of it as a sacrament . . . but there will be liquid.

Are Business Experiences a must? Generals are always best at fighting the last war. They equip for it. They train for it. But fresh horizons require new tactics. Sears fought against Montgomery Ward. Did they even see Wal-Mart on their radar screen before it was too late? Often we look

backward because it is easier than the unknown future. The future is here and customers are voting with their dollars. They chase down the experience and inhale it to the fullest, like the Super Bowl, a 3D movie or even a Staff Ride. The experience is the demand of the younger generation and a pleasant surprise for your current business. So are you going to attack from the south, or from the north?

ISAE April LuncheonMary Kutheis’ presentation included a great message and new way of tackling projects. She reminded us to not multi-task rather we should be managing multiple projects instead.

Complete one task and then move on to the next. •Have a master to-do list•Break each to-do list into 1, 2, 3 to prioritize and accomplish •tasks.Schedule time to check your email instead of while you are •completing your tasks.

•Focus on S.T.A.R. Single Tasking Accelerates Results

State of Mind Scale

She left us thinking we really do want to work like a dog for they live in the moment and are a great example of a truly happy worker. Then, maybe we CAN sleep like a baby.

REID TO BRING TAX EXTENDERS TO FLOOR VOTE Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said this week that he will schedule a floor vote on a tax extenders package shortly after the Senate returns from its upcoming two-week recess. Reid’s comments came after the Senate Finance Committee voted April 3 to extend most of the temporary tax breaks and credits through 2015. The list of expired provisions include popular tax breaks for businesses like bonus depreciation, the research and development credit, and incentives for alternative energy, as well as some more obscure tax breaks for specific industries. Congress usually renews these temporary tax breaks on an annual basis but allowed them to expire at the end of 2013. The tax extenders bill passed by the Finance Committee extends most of the provisions through 2015 at a cost of $67 billion over 10 years, according to an estimate from the Joint Committee on Taxation. The legislation does not include any offsets to pay for the tax extenders. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) said during the committee markup last week that this will be the last tax extenders bill he will offer as chairman, and the bill will serve as a bridge to comprehensive tax reform. On the House side, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) held a hearing April 8 to begin

ASAE Inroads

the process of looking at each expired tax provision to determine which should be made permanent as part of overall tax reform, and which should stay expired. “One major goal of tax reform is to provide stable, predictable rules for businesses so that they can grow, create jobs and increase wages,” Camp said. “Congress must end the practice of short-term tax policy. Extending important business tax provisions for one or two years at a time makes it very difficult for employers to plan and adds immense confusion and complexity for taxpayers.”

HOUSE PASSES RYAN BUDGET PLAN The House today narrowly passed the budget blueprint introduced by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) by a 219-205 vote, with no Democratic support. GOP leaders had outwardly expressed confidence that they had the votes but it was expected to be close, as a number of conservatives had either said they would vote against the Ryan plan or they were on the fence. The legislation calls for $5.1 trillion in cuts over the next 10 years, repeal of Obamacare and major reforms to Medicare, but at least a handful of conservatives within the party complained that it doesn’t cut enough or balance the budget as quickly as they would like.

House Democrats unanimously voted against the measure. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), ranking member of the House Budget Committee, this week introduced a Democratic alternative to the Ryan budget plan that hews more closely to President Obama’s budget blueprint for FY15.VanHollensaidthisweekthattheRyanbudget“castsa dark shadow over the American Dream and is a recipe for our nation’s economic decline.” The Democratic-controlled Senate will not vote on the Ryan bill and does not intend to offer a budget plan this year. Following today’s vote, the House will adjourn for two weeks, returning to Washington on April 28.

RUBIO, RYAN WORKING ON ACA ALTERNATIVE It was reported this week that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) are working on a replacement for the Affordable Care Act. The legislation may be announced as early as this month. Rubio and Ryan have previously partnered on immigration issues last year. Details of the legislation have not been released yet. A spokesperson for Rep. Paul Ryan stated, “Congressman Ryan continues working with his colleagues, including reformers like Sen. Rubio, on better solutions to deliver quality, affordable coverage to American families.” If the Republican Party wins control of the Senate in the 2014 election, the Rubio-Ryan bill may impact how both chambers move forward on healthcare policy. The Obama administration continues to tout the number of people who have signed up under the ACA. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told the Senate Finance Committee today that 7.5 million Americans have signed up for private health insurance through the Marketplace. This number is up from the 7.1 million announced last week.

REINFORCE VALUE OF MEETINGS DURING DISTRICT WORK PERIOD ASAE is encouraging association professionals to use the upcoming congressional district work period to reinforce the importance of face-to-face meetings between government employees and the industries and professions represented by associations. During ASAE’s annual fly-in March 25-26, association professionals shared the impact that government-wide budget cuts have had on federal employee attendance at their conferences around the country. In response to some conference spending scandals in 2010, the Obama administration cut conference and travel budgets for all federalagenciesto70percentofFiscalYear2010levelsandinstituted stricter internal controls to tighten the approval

process for travel and conference-planning. While ASAE understands the need for fiscal responsibility, the new restrictions have sharply reduced government attendance at many private-sector conferences over the past two years and hindered the information-sharing and necessary training that occurs at face-to-face meetings. ASAE’s fly-in participants shared personal accounts with their elected officials of how their association meetings have been impacted by the budget constraints, but it’s important to keep reinforcing this message. Click here for talking points on this issue. Both the House and Senate are finishing up work today and will be back in their home states and districts for a two-week Easter recess, returning to Washington on April 28. Visit ASAE’s Engage site for more information on contacting your elected representatives in their district offices.
