The services and industry sectors have revolutionized the Indian economy and have become

a continual source of growth. A quality business education is a sine qua non for sustaining the growth momentum.

Business education at the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) is comprehensive, as it covers a wide gamut of courses, a variety of teaching techniques, intensive interaction with industry in the form of industrial visits and lectures from captains of industry.

The add-ons are global orientation, sensitization in foreign language and training in communication and personality development. Familiarity with the socio-economic and political environment is facilitated via books and journals subscribed by the IPE library, reputed industry databases, sports and games facilities, renowned faculty and highly cooperative supporting staff.

IPE endeavours to add value to the industry through its Executive PGDM participants.

Management education is an important arm of the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE).

The Institute intends to provide quality management education to help the Indian industry to increase its value addition to the Indian economy.

The Institute has strategized this through the advice of its Hon’ble Members of the Board of Governors, captains of industry, international linkages, and an inter-disciplinary highly competent faculty.

Institute of Public Enterprise

The Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) is a Centre of Excellence

in Social Science Research and Management, supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), for the study of issues and policies relating to public enterprises (PEs) and public systems. It was established in 1964 as an autonomous institute managed by a society whose membership is limited to public enterprises and academics interested in PE studies. Over the last 46 years, the Institute has widened the scope of its work. Beginning with research, today it is a pioneer in Consultancy, Executive Training and Management Education.

Research IPE has completed about 150 research projects since inception, while 13 research projects are ongoing in the current academic year.

A Profile


Consultancy The knowledge and insights gained in research enable IPE to undertake consultancy assignments for national and international organizations like the United National Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Commonwealth Secretariat, Department for International Development (DFID), Government of UK, International Centre for Promotion of Enterprise (ICPE), Asian and Pacific Development Centre (APDC), International Labour Organization (ILO), Government of Royal Netherlands, Central and State governments, Public and Private sector enterprises.

Training As a part of its developmental activities and as a logical extension of its activities, IPE has been organizing Management Development Programs (MDPs) for the past 46 years for officers of state and central government and practicing managers of public and private sector organizations.

The Institute has conducted nearly 100 programs for IAS and IFS cadre covering more than 1600 senior civil servants. In addition, over 1000 MDPs and in-company programs were organized for more than 40,000 practicing managers of the corporate sector.

These programs fall under the categories of General Management, Project Planning and Appraisal, Human Resources Development, Finance, Marketing, Corporate Planning, Information Technology and Restructuring of Enterprises.

The Institute has also conducted several seminars, conferences and other programs sponsored by various national / international agencies.

A Profile


Armed with the rich experience gained in Research, Consultancy

and Training activities and taking in to consideration the ever-increasing need for professionally trained personnel by the industry, IPE started a unique part-time evening Program MBA (PE) in 1981-82. The Program, affiliated to the Osmania University and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), is tailored to meet the specific needs of practicing managers. Since inception about 500 executives have pursued the MBA (PE) Program.

With this success, in the year 1995, the Institute started a two-year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) to provide skilled human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Industry. The course is approved by AICTE. Selection of the candidates is through CAT conducted by the IIMs. Since inception more than 1000 students have graduated from IPE and have been placed in reputed organizations.

This was followed by a two-year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management–Retail&Marketing(PGDM-RM) program in 2007 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Banking, Insurance and Financial Services (PGDM-BIF) in 2008. Further, two more new courses ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Management’ – Biotechnology (PGDM-BT) and ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Management – International Business’ (PGDM-IB) were introduced last year by the institute, to cater to the requirements of these sectors.

Subsequently, keeping in view the rising global business demands and economy for ‘Business-Ready Managers’, the Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Exec PGDM) Program was launched last year. This course aims at creating leaders with a global perspective, capable of handling scale and diversity with great zeal and passion.

Management EducationLocation and Facilities The Institute is situated in the sylvan surroundings of the picturesque Osmania University campus in Hyderabad. Its location in the University campus provides a serene academic environment, which promotes learning.

The Institute has well furnished air-conditioned conference halls, classrooms and auditorium, with all the modern audio-visual equipment, which cater to the requirements of the conferences, seminars, and training programs held here. The Institute has indoor and outdoor sports facilities as well.

IPE has initiated the development of its own campus at another place involving a substantial capital outlay. To this end, IPE has acquired 14 acres of land situated in Shameerpet Village and Mandal, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.


The Institute’s Library has a rich collection of 50,000 plus

documents, which includes books, pamphlets and bound journal volumes and it annually receives more than 160 journals, national and International.

The Library is IPE’s knowledge hub, and reflects the Institute’s commitment to providing the best possible learning resources. The Library resources include books, DVDs, journal articles and also government reports. The IPE Library provides web-based access to over 10,000 full text journals and six databases 24x7 on an Institute-wide network

The Library subscribes to the following online databases: EBSCO Online Database, India Business Insight Database (IBID), PROWESS – CMIE, Emerald Xtra Management, Indiastat.com and Jstor.

Library and Documentation CentreIT Facilities Knowledge of Information Technology is essential for effective management. Keeping in view the IT trends in the industry, the institute has set up a well-equipped modern computer lab with four servers, 100 P- IV systems with a wide range of peripherals and connected through 4 Mbps LAN with round-the-clock internet connectivity in the whole campus including hostel and library.

Schools The academic functioning at IPE is vibrant, thanks to the concept of domain-specific schools that is in place. Each of the schools works diligently on relevant topics of interest through organizing Seminars, Conferences and Management Development Programs. The school also organizes competitions to inculcate the competitive spirit in the students.

The Executive PGDM Program

The AICTE-approved 15-month program is specially

designed for middle-level executives aspiring to assume top management responsibilities and be change agents in reputed organizations.

The program has been designed to imbibe problem-solving ability, strategic thinking, leadership skills, in-depth functional knowledge and decision making skills for professionals from variousindustries&functionaldiscipline.

The Exec PGDM Program selects professionals who have in-depth exposure in one or more industry functions. This diverse experience is leveraged in a classroom environment through rigorous curriculum, outdoor experience, peer learning, strategic decision making through business simulation projects and a proven pedagogy of case studies, readings and field work.

It is these qualities that drive the Exec PGDM graduates up the corporate ladder to summits beyond ordinary corporate reach. It aims at creating future leaders whose energy and intelligence stand unmatched. The batch of 2010-11 is the first Exec PGDM batch from IPE.

Admission CriteriaApplicants for the Exec PGDM Program must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in

An OverviewIndia / abroad in any discipline. They must have at least three years’ experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a reputed organization in the public, private or non–governmental sectors.

Candidates are selected through a rigorous selection process that involves profiling on the basis of work experience, GMAT / XAT / CAT / IPE test scores and performance in personal interviews, in addition to professional recommendations.

Course Structure The 15-month program will have 12 months of course work followed by three months of project work. The course work is divided into the following five modules: Orientation, Functional, Global, Elective-I and Elective-II.

Course CurriculumThe course curriculum is designed to give the Exec PGDM students an in-depth knowledge of core management subjects and expertise in their selected functional areas.
