Prime Cattle to 215ppk and £1474 Barren Cows to 145ppk and £1017

Another good day in the cattle pen here at Exeter on Monday with the recent strong beef trade drawing several well bred and finished prime cattle which topped a 215ppk for the best of a fine run of neat 420 to 450kg red Limousin heifers from Rob & Sue Greep of Cornwood. Michael & Stephen Harvey of Hennock sold a 650kg Limousin steer (25m) at 214ppk and £1387 with a 630kg Bazadaise bullock off the same farm reaching 210ppk and £1336, Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey also drew 214ppk for a 580kg Blonde heifer (26m) which grossed £1242 closely followed by their 590kg steer of the same breed which saw 213ppk and £1258. A couple of heavyweight Limousin steers (22m) from the Stoneman family of Sampford Courtenay saw one at 710kg reach 200ppk and £1416 with a heavier 770kg sort reaching 192ppk and a massive £1474. Jason & Cathy Crang of Cadeleigh saw there 660kg Limousin steer (22m) fetch 200pph and £1316 whilst Bill Hobbs of Moretonhampstead saw his Limousin (26m) to 200ppk as well (£1228) and a hefty 816kg Aberdeen Angus bullock (27m) from Ed & Julie Williams, Ilsington realised £1423. A nice run of Charolais and Blonde steers (26m) from Sue Cleave of Moretonhampstead reached 195ppk and £1260 whilst a 600kg Devon steer (27m) from Geoff & Liz Hosegood, East Worlington sold at 188ppk and levelled out at £1128. Fewer barren cows on offer this week and not the quality we have seen of late although a 650kg Blonde cow from Martin Reed of Kings Nympton did rise to 145ppg and £950. More decent Blondes from Michael & Stephen Harvey ran to 131ppk and £944 with highest price realised was £1005 for a Simmental from Bryan & Martin Hingston of Marldon. Other continental bred barreners from MH & SRS Eggins of Roborough, Plymouth sold to 128ppk and 126ppk for Charolais and Limousin cows respectively whilst native breed cows sold well and to 133pk (£1017) for J & S Eggins of Yelverton with a South Devon and Devon’s sold to 130ppk and £712 for Bob Rank of Longdown. Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday’s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction

in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers.

Spring Lambs to £112.50 & 234ppk Cull Ewes to £131 & Rams to £114

Nearly 1600 prime spring lambs were a dearer trade for all forward following the rise last week due to an apparent nationwide shortage. Overall average took another 12p lift to level at 218ppk, which coincidently is just 5 pence less than the average four weeks ago on June 1st. Topping per head and per kilo were a pair of very smart Texel lambs from FH Chave of Wellington weighing 48kgs and achieving £112.50 and 234ppk. Other heavy pure lambs, this time Charollais from Gerald Burrough of Dunkeswell realised £111.20 as crossbred lambs sold to £109 for Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick and £108.50 for both M & A Partridge of Crediton (47kgs at 231ppk) and Tom Wilde & Lizzie Caunter of Ipplepen. Other 50kg+ lambs to £108 for both April Hayden of South Pool and Ross & Helen May of Netherexe as more 47kgs rose to £106.80 for Messrs Hatherley & Rendle of Tamerton Foliot and £105 & £104 for John Simmons of Poltimore. A cracking run of lambs from Phillip Ayre of Black Dog saw his 45kgs fetch £102.50 as well as 44kgs make £101.50 (231ppk) as other 45kgs sold at £101 for Gavin Abraham of Dartmouth and £100 for Robert & Christine Steer. Some more superb 44kg lambs at £100 again for FH Chave, followed closely by RJ Brayley of Jacobstowe at £99.80, Alan Weymouth of Salcombe at £99.20 and Dave Fox of Cheriton Fitzpaine at £99.20, £99 & £98.80. 43kgs to £98.20 & £98 again from that good run from Phillip Ayre, £97.80 from the Steer family of Ashburton and £97.50 for Ivor & Rene Alexander of Tiverton. 42kgs to £96 for the Morgan family of Goveton as 41kgs sold to £94.80 for David & Vicky Prouse of Ogwell and £94 for Barry Mildon & Family who also had top price 40kgs at £92.20 (231ppk). Lighter lambs keenly sought with very few less than £80 with store buyers coming out strong for forward stores and lighter finished lambs. Top money here went to a smart single 39kg lamb from David Slocombe of Crockernwell at £86.50 followed closely by Ken & Joyce Pleace of Cullompton with a penful of smart Charollais lambs at £85.20 and best of the 38kgs sold to £84.50 for Christine Steer of Avonwick.

An unexpected larger entry of 1036 cull sheep were also a better trade with everything looking £3-£8 dearer on the week. A tremendous pen of seven pure Texel ewes topped the day at £131 for Kevin & Becky Matthews of Launceston who also had a pen of Charollais at £112 and a pair of black crossbred ewes at £110. Another black crossbred ewe at £102 for Melanie Forward of Talaton and further continental crosses at £99 for both Andrew Hodgson of Cullompton and the Perryman family of Black Dog whilst two pens of Suffolk crosses also rose to £99, these came from Rodney Thorne of Wiveliscombe and Tom Cleave of Broadhempston. Plenty of other ewes then selling from £90 to £97.50 including some fat, whilst others were back in the £80’s and late £70’s generally but better received than the last month or so. Mules often mid £70’s topping at £79 for a Rough Fell Mule from the Sleep family of Blackawton. Very few hill bred sheep forward but any lighter weight or leaner/plain ewes looked well sold with feeding Mules easily £50 plus. Cull rams to £114 for a Charollais from the Quick family of Crediton and Chris Carr of Exeter sold four well at £94.50. All culls averaged £73 which is up exactly £5. **AS OF NEXT WEEK ALL HOGGS WILL BE SOLD IN WITH THE EWES AND DESCRIBED AS SUCH**

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

trade.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
