Like a lot of you, I have quit setting eggs for chicks that have the potentialto be prospects for the 2012 APA National. As you all know the APA Nationalis fairly early this year so even the pullets had better be in the brooders anddeveloping well if they are going to be at point-of-lay, or thereabouts, by Octo-ber 6th. For some of us, Lucasville will be our first Fall show for 2012. Any ofyou that have not attended an APA or ABA National Show really need to do soat your first opportunity. I remember my first time at a National and wow was itfun! ‘National Fever’ can be a real affliction (in a positive way). But, there isstill hope for those of you who had a late start hatching this year! The 2012Bantam Club’s National does not take place until January 2013. I should haveupdates on the 2012 ABA National in the next issue.

On a different note - The feed we give our poultry is an important subjectworth lengthy discussion. I have been doing a lot of research on feedingwhole grains over the last year, and also doing some experimenting with it. Thereason for this was that the quality of commercial feeds that I have had accessto in the last few years just seems to keep deteriorating as fast as the priceskeep rising. And with all the rumors about the side effects of feeding geneti-cally modified grains . . . The removal of animal proteins from most poultryrations . . .etc., it just makes sense to really take a hard look at our poultry feeds.This is especially true when you are not raising enough birds that you can buyin bulk to insure the freshest feed possible. Some of the commercial feed beingsold by the chain feed stores for poultry is just atrocious. And I hear from a lotof you that are having the same problems with the commercial feeds. I amhoping to have some articles on the subject of feed in the next couple of issues.

Also, it is not too early to be concerned about maintaining fresh cool waterfor your birds on these warm, humid days. Plus, you may also want to turnthose fans on a lot earlier than normal this year. I pray we do not experience thesame record breaking heat we had last year.

The “Primo” poultry show of the year is theAmerican Poultry Association annual meet.This is where the best of the best come tocompete with their best birds. News From TheOhio National

There are some big things happening forthe November10, 11 2012 Ohio Nationalshow. First on the list are the national meets.The Ohio National will be hosting the Wyan-dotte Breeders of America, Serama Councilof North America, American Buckeye Poul-try Club, American Brahma Club, and NewHampshire Breeders club. So for all of thesebreed clubs, everyone at the Ohio Nationalwould like to say thank you for having theOhio National host your national meet.

Greetings from the APA office. It is hardto believe that another month has passed. Iguess I spend too much time at the desk, Ihave come to depend on the computer screento tell me what day it is. When I take a breakfrom the desk, Dick always has some justhatched chicks for me to admire. Isn’t springhatching season great.

Procedures in the office are always chang-ing. The latest change I am trying to imple-ment is to send the News & Views via email.I know there are members who don’t haveemail or would rather have a paper copy andwill be glad to continue to send those. Thereare two reasons for this change, more peopleare living in an electronic age and the News& Views continues to be more expensive toprint and mail. We are always trying to keepcosts down and while we can’t control thepostage charges, by using email we can cutdown the cost of printing and will be spend-ing less at the post office.

It has come to my attention while work-ing on show reports that some clubs are us-ing judges who aren’t APA members. Pleasecheck show rules that state that all judgesmust be members in good standing of theAPA. I realize that in planning a show thereis a lot to do and this is just a reminder.

As you are reading this, it is time for meto start packing for the semi-annual in Avocaon May 12-13. If you would like any mer-chandise delivered there, please let me know,I will be happy to deliver it and save theshipping fee. I have been to Avoca a fewyears ago; it is a very exhibitor friendly showwith a lot of activities planned for everyoneincluding a balloon launching contest androoster crowing contest. A Look At the Origins ofthe Rhode Island Red

Excerpts from ‘The Poultry Book’by Harrison Weir (1905)

I have found this to be an important bodyof information on the origin of the RhodeIsland Red as it discusses the developmentof a breed of fowl through the process ofcontinuous outcrossing over an extendedperiod of time through the cooperation ofmany breeders. This process made theRhode Island Red a unique breed and isprobably the reason most Rhode Island Redstrains are still good to excellent birds,having all the best ‘chicken traits’.

Dr. N. B. Aldrich, of Massachusetts, in anarticle in the catalogue of the Rhode IslandRed Club for 1904, speaks of the origin ofRhode Island Reds. He goes back into his-tory more than fifty years, and shows thatRed Cochin China cocks and later Red Malaycocks were introduced into sections ofRhode Island and Massachusetts by certainsea captains. He refers to a Dr. AlfredBaylies, of Massachusetts, who was a rela-tive of Walter Baylies, the treasurer of theBoston Poultry Association. Dr. Baylies, inJuly, 1846, imported Cochin Chinas, and, inBennett's Poultry Book, published in 1850,is recorded as saying, "the cockerels aregenerally red.

A Mr. Taylor, who imported Cochin Chi-nas in May 1847, says: "The imported cockwas a peculiar red … and the hen a bay orreddish-brown." We find thus a record ofRed Cochin China males almost sixty yearsago. The sea captains brought home justsuch specimens to Little Compton, RhodeIsland, and Westport, Massachusetts. Later,they brought home the great Malay fowl fromAsia. In Little Compton was introduced whatwas spoken of as Red Malays. These RedCochin China cocks and the Red Malaycocks were selected and bred with the flocksof fowls in Little Compton fifty and sixtyyears ago, the same as the red cock is se-lected there today. Later, in some sections,Rose-Comb Brown Leghorn blood was in-troduced. Whereas, it is quite true that otherblood at times has been mixed in, the fact

remains that the utility poultry farmer of thissection for nearly sixty years has been se-lecting to head his flock a hardy red cock ofa type that showed vigor.That this red cock dates backto the origin given aboveseems to be beyond dispute.

There is no need of claim-ing the reds are a mixture ofthis, that or the other breed;they are the result of fiftyyears of careful out-breeding,and it would be better for thestamina of many of our breedsif they had been bred on thesame plan, instead of in-bred.Dr. Aldrich states that therewere practically no Pea-CombRhode Island Reds ten yearsago. The combs that prevailare rose and single. In fact, these are the onlycombs that have been recognized by theRhode Island Red Club. It is difficult to de-scribe the color of Rhode Island Reds. TheStandard says the males are "rich brilliantred, except where black is desired. The birdshould be so brilliant in luster as to have aglossed appearance." The females have the"general surface color lighter than in the male.Except where black is desired, the color is arich, even shade of reddish buff, darker thanthe so-called golden buff. The female is notso brilliant in luster as the male.

In times past, criticism has been made thatthese fowls have a wide range of color. Theanswer to this statement is that they vary"only in shade of color"; and this variationis fast disappearing by the present carefulbreeding. The American Poultry Associationhas admitted the Single-Comb variety ofRhode Island Reds to the Standard; but theRhode Island Red Club still recognize two,the Rose- and the Single-Comb varieties.

There is probably not another breed pro-duced by fifty years of outbreeding. TheRhode Island Red stands as the only proofof what outbreeding will do. We fanciers donot live years enough to compare a breeddeliberately, unless we in-breed, but it wasnot so with the original Rhode Island Redbreeders; they knew the red cock was themost vigorous, and, almost unconsciously,they made a breed. Dr. N. B. Aldrich, of Mas-sachusetts, first exhibited the Rhode Island

Reds in New York City, in the "any-other-variety" class in 1891-92. At this show, R. G.Buffington, of Massachusetts , and Dr.Aldrich exhibited Buff Wyandottes and BuffPlymouth Rocks. They were composed al-most entirely of Rhode Island Red blood. Itwas not until 1898 that a few breeders at FallRiver, Massachusetts, formed the RhodeIsland Red Club.

There has been muchcri ticism about the earlystandards, but, as the Hon.C. M. Bryant, president ofthe club, well says in anarticle, "The trouble withall standards outside ofthe Rhode Island Reds atthe present time is that al-together too much is said."It is true that the early stan-dards for Rhode IslandReds were rather crudeand somewhat indefinite,but this was intentionallyso, in order that the breed-ers might, for themselves,

gradually find out what they wanted, insteadof being hampered by a standard that per-haps later would call for a very different fowl.The present Rhode Island Red standard isas clear and definite as that of any otherbreed. The following, taken from the Stan-dard of 1901, shows the high aim of thebreeders of Rhode Island Reds:

"The special aim of the promoters of thisbreed being to conserve vigor and prolifi-cacy rather than immaculate perfection ofcolor, black may find its place in sectionsenumerated; and the gradual fading of thered portions of the mature hen's plumage,which naturally follows upon prolific lay-ing, shall not be discriminated against in theplacing of awards."

In the 1903 Standard we find the follow-ing: "Apparent vigor is to be regarded withthe consideration of shape."

Note what John Crowther, a prominentbreeder of Rhode Island Reds, says: "Morethan what the famed Faverolle is to France,the Rhode Island Red is to America—thebest all-purpose fowl of a practical and pro-gressive people. And, as Myra V. Norys, anable writer on general poultry topics, has awell said, 'In richness and harmonious blend-ing of tint, there is nothing in domestic fowlsto equal the color of the best Rhode IslandRed males.' These fowls are certainly des-tined to attract fanciers almost as much asthose who admire them simply as profit-get-ters. Their quick growth, early maturity,

tinted or brown eggs, small proportion ofbone and entrails to the weight of the body,fine motherly qualities, without being per-sistently broody, found favor for them atonce. Their well-shaped and compact bod-ies, long keel-bones, and plump, wide breastsmade them unequaled for market poultry atany stage of growth 'from the hatch to thehatchet,' as expert poultryman Cochran hasvery cleverly put it. They proved a match aslayers at any time of the yearfor any mere 'egg machines'that were tried against them,but as winter layers theywere peerless. Their devel-opment on the lowlandsmade them hardy andproved that 'high and dry'situations are not indispens-able to the health of fowls."

In a recent letter to Sec-retary W. J. Drisko, of theRhode Island Red Club,Lester Tompkins, of Massa-chusetts, says: "My experi-ence with Reds dates backsome thirty-five years to thetime when my father wasone of the largest breedersof poultry in Rhode Island.He kept about two hundredReds, exclusively—a largeflock for that time. It was acustom with my father, andalso with some others in that neighborhood,to get male birds, and occasionally females,from the whaling-ships that brought themfrom the South Pacific and Indian oceans.These birds were a rich, brilliant, even red(no yellow, no chocolate) from comb to sickle,long keel, broad heavy breast, heavy thighsand wide between the legs, with bodies

somewhat upright like our present Games.They were called in that neighborhood 'RedGames,' or 'Yellow-legged Red Games,' andsometimes 'Malay Games.' I think they wereall single comb.

"Flocks of fowl in that section soon be-came red, whatever their blood might havebeen for this reason—the 'Red Game' was avigorous fighter. As soon as one was putwith a flock, he felt it a self-imposed duty to

kill every other male inthe flock. During myyears of experience asa breeder, I havehandled and closelyobserved quite a num-ber of different strainsof Reds. I have alwaysnoticed tha t thosestrains, which weredirectly descendedfrom the Red Game,were the most hardyand vigorous, bredthe truest to type andcolor, had the richestyellow skin and legs,and were the mostprolific layers. Theearly flocks of Redswere practically allsingle-comb, and, Ithink, the short'pugged' rose-comb,

sometimes called the Malay comb, and camefrom the 'Red Shanghai' blood.

"The introduction of Brown Leghornblood was also a detriment to the breed onthe whole, I think, for it decreased the size,diminished the hardiness, and gave us mostof the smut in under-color which is so objec-tionable now-a-days. It also gave us a lighter

colored and a less uniformly colored egg.The original 'Red Games' laid a finely col-ored egg, not so brown as a Brahma's or aLangshan's, but more of a pink or reddishbrown. It has probably been necessary tohave a tinge of all these different bloods,Buff Cochin, Red Shanghai, Brown Leghorn,and Dunghills, to give us a genuinely Ameri-can breed; still I firmly believe that the goodold Red Game blood is a very essential foun-dation.

Ibelieve our best breeders put type and vigoron equali ty, with color as second. Manyjudges in all breeds reverse this order. STANDARD OF 1903 FOR THERHODE ISLAND REDS

The following standard for the Rhode Is-land Reds was adopted by the Rhode Is-land Red Club at its 1903 meeting, and isreproduced herewith from the club's cata-logue by permission of Secretary W. J.Drisko:

"The Single-Comb variety was admittedto the Standard by the American PoultryAssociation at its February meeting in 1904.The Standard adopted by the AmericanPoultry Association is substantially thesame as below, differing mainly in the word-ing.

"Disqualifications —Feather or down on

Diseased specimens,crooked backs, deformed beaks, shanks andfeet other than yellow or red horn color. Apendulous crop shall be cut hard. Underall disqualifying clauses, the specimen shallhave the benefit of the doubt.

"Standard Weights —Cock, eight andone-half pounds; hen, six and one-halfpounds; cockerel, seven and one-halfpounds; pullet, five pounds. Apparent vigoris to be regarded with the consideration ofshape.

"SHAPE OF MALE "Head—Of medium size and breadth. "Beak —Short and regularly curved. "Eyes —Sight perfect, and unobstructed

by breadth of head or comb. Comb.-Single,medium in size, set firmly upon the head,perfectly straight and upright, free from sidesprigs, with five even and well-defined ser-rations, those in front and rear smaller thanthose in the center, of considerable breadthwhere it is fixed to the head.

"Comb —Rose, low, firm on the head,

top oval in shape and surface covered withsmall points, terminating in a small spikeat the rear. The comb to conform to the gen-eral curve of the head.

"Wattles —Medium and equal inlength, moderately rounded.

"Ear-Lobes.-Well developed. Symmetryof proportion in head adjuncts is to be con-sidered.

"Neck —Of medium length and car-ried slightly forward, not arched backward.It is covered with abundant hackle, flow-ing over the shoulders, but not too looselyfeathered-

" Back —Broad, long, and, in the main,nearly horizontal; this horizontal effect be-ing modified by slightly rising curves athackle and lesser tail-coverts. Saddle-feath-ers of medium length and abundant.

Breast —Broad, deep, and carriednearly in a line perpendicular to the baseof the beak-at least, it should not be car-ried anterior to this line.

"Body —Deep, broad, and long; keel-bone long, straight, and extending well for-ward and back, giving the body an oblonglook.

"Fluff —Moderately full, but featherscarried fairly close to the body, not aCochin-fluff.

"Wings —Of good size, well folded, andthe flights carried horizontally.

"Tail —Of medium length, quite wellspread, carried fairly well back, increas-ing the apparent length of the bird. Sickles

of medium length, passing a little beyondthe main tail-feathers. Lesser sickles andtail coverts of medium length and fairlyabundant.

"Legs —Thighs large, of mediumlength, and well covered with soft feathers.Shanks of medium length, well rounded,and smooth.

"Toes —Straight, strong, well spread,and of medium length.

"COLOR OF THE MALE "Beak —Red horn color, or yellow. "Eyes —Red. "Face —Bright red. "Comb, Wattles and Ear-Lobes—

Bright red. "Shanks and Toes —Yellow or red horn

color. A line of red pigment down the sidesof the same is desirable.

"Plumage —General surface rich bril-liant red, except where black is desired.Free from shafting, mealy appearance orbrassy effect. Depth of color (red) is slightlyaccentuated on wingbows and back, butthe less contrast between these parts andthe hackle or breast, the better: a harmoni-ous blending is what is desired. The birdshould be so brilliant in luster as to have aglossed appearance. Other things beingequal, the specimen having the deepest andrichest red, salmon, or buff under-colorshall receive the award. Any smut or whitein the under-color is to be cut hard. Thequill of the feather should be red or salmon.White showing on the outside of the body isto be cut harder than white that is out ofsight. Black is desired in the under-web ofthe wing-flights. The main tail-feathers andtwo main sickle feathers are to be black orgreenish-black. The greater tail-coverts aremainly black, but, as they approach thesaddle, they may become russet or red. Theblending of the red body with the black tailis gradual, thus preventing any sudden con-trast. With the saddle parted, showing theunder-color at the base of the tail, the ap-pearance should be red or salmon, not whit-ish or smoky. The hackle should be free fromblack, although a suspicion of black thatcan hardly be found would not cut the birdmuch. White in hackle will be cut harderthan black. The wing-bars should be freefrom black, and all black in the primariesand secondaries should be out of sightwhen the wing is folded.

The under-color is of reddish-salmon, or buff, free from foreign colors.Other things being equal, the specimen hav-ing the richest under-color shall receive theaward. The quill of the feather should bered or salmon. The general surface-color inthe female is more even than in the male.
