To me, the stage direction (exit, pursued by bear) from Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is hilarious because of its direct simplicity.

Shakespeare: No really. I want a bear to chase him offstage.

Producer: You want a – ?

Shakespeare: Bear. Yeah. A real one.

Producer: Um.

Shakespeare: Trust me, it ’s gonna be awesome.

Producer: (long pause) OK!

Though I am no Shakespeare, the companies who chose to do this play are definitely the trusting, visionary, producers that say yes to the wilder ideas and then bring them to life with grace, brains, and wit. This is why theaters devoted to new plays exist, why they are essential, and why they’re so good at what they do.

This play is full of contradictions and juxtapositions – humor about serious things, the Southern and the Shakespearean, love and hate and violence and justice and bears and karaoke. What is clear is that good friends, self love, high standards and comedy save the day – and maybe save the world.

I am so grateful for this play, this company, these actors, this director, this town - and the women who survive and thrive and defy the grip of violence.

Play on, strange little play. Play on.

Grrrrrr,Laurenwww.LaurenGunderson.com

“If you take a child to the theater, not only will they practi ce empathy, they might also laugh uproariously, or come home singing about

science, or want to know more about history, or tell you what happened at school today, or spend all dinner discussing music, or learn how to

handle confl ict, or start becoming future patrons of the arts.” ~ Lauren Gunderson

Page 10: Exit, Pursued by a Bear

W hen a contemporary p lay uses a c lass ic Shakespearean stage direct ion as i ts t i t le , fo l lowed by “A Revenge Comedy,” you reckon

i t may be k inda quirky. As in Shakespeare’s works, a universa l theme of human fo l ly i s at the heart of the story; however, these characters spr ing d irect ly out of our current media-dr iven culture v ia p laywright Lauren Gunderson’s snappy, h i lar ious d ia logue and i ronic turn of events . Nan and Kyle c lear ly have an unhealthy marr iage, but that ’s not very funny--in fact i t ’s very UN-funny; i t i s the choices Nan and her cohorts make to rect i fy i t that cont inual ly surpr ise us . The s i tuat ion is as surreal as one of Shakespeare’s Romance plays , but the lessons to be learned regarding love, marr iage, and fr iendship are very real . Ms. Gunderson’s scr ipt art fu l ly balances contemporary media references and c lass ica l theatr ica l devices ( inc luding stage d irect ions) to create pert inence, poignancy, and “LMAO” humor ( i f you’re not a “texter,” ask someone who is ) .

Perhaps when Nan read Sweetheart ’s col lect ion of Shakespeare p lays she became inspired by what Emi l ia says to Desdemona (who is in a somewhat s imi lar s i tuat ion with her husband, Othel lo) :

“But I do th ink i t i s their husbands’ faults I f wives do fa l l : say that they s lack their dut ies , Or e lse break out in peevish jealous ies , Throwing restra int upon us; or say they str ike us , Or scant our former having in despite; Why, we have gal ls , and though we have some grace, Yet have we some revenge. Then let them use us wel l : e lse let them know, The i l l s we do, their i l l s instruct us so.”

Or as Nan hersel f says: “ You shouldn’t need bears to be n ice.”

Season tickets for the 2014 Season will go on sale during this play!

The year is 1932. Irving and his daughter, Honey, are preparing for the opening of their gourmet restau-rant in Niagara Falls, Canada. Their plan to feature a famous French chef turns into a recipe for disas-ter when he fails to appear. Things go from bad to worse when they persuade an unemployed drifter to don the chef’s hat and apron at the last moment. Mix in lots of doors, mistaken identities and some freshly baked salmon mousse and it’s only a matter of time before this chaotic concoction boils over.
