3EXPERIENCE LUXEMBOURG!

Experience the friendly, cosmopolitan city of

Luxembourg, a charming and easily accessible

place. The capital city of the Grand Duchy

is home to a variety of cultural monuments and

reminders of its rich historic past waiting to be

discovered. Picturesque squares, narrow old

town alleys, magnificent boulevards and spacious parks will tempt you to take a stroll.

The city of Luxembourg is proud of its colourful history, reaching back over a thousand years. As the seat of important European insti-tutions Luxembourg has made a name for itself all

over the world.

The Luxembourg City Tourist Office will assist you in

your discovery of the city and turn it into an unfor-

gettable experience for you. Whatever the time of the year you choose for your visit, a trip to Luxembourg will always be a very special pleasure!

7EXPERIENCE LUXEMBOURG!

Luxembourg invites you to take an exciting jour-

ney into the past. The unique legacy, carved in the

stones of the fortified towers, bastions, and ram-

parts, still defines the view of the city today.

Allow yourself to be carried away by the thousand-

year old history of this fortress city, which was once

hailed as the “Gibraltar of the North”! It is the work

of military engineers from Burgundy, Spain, France,

Austria and Prussia that made Luxembourg's fortifi-

cations into a major European stronghold.

Since the Ancien Régime Luxembourg has thus

been a hub for different nationalities which laid the

foundations for the multicultural nature of the future

capital city of the Grand Duchy. In 1994 the massive

fortifications and the historical old town were listed

as UNESCO World Heritage.

Equally fascinating is the exploration of the case-

mates, the subterranean tunnels which lead

through the fortifications, and the view from the

“most beautiful balcony in Europe”.

Luxembourg, an encounter with an exciting past!

... UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE FOR 20 YEARS

LUXEMBOURG UNDERGROUND: THE CASEMATESLuxembourg's fortifications and historical old town enjoy worldwide renown. In 1994 they were added to the UNESCO list of World

Heritage sites. The subterranean tunnel network of the casemates on

the massive supporting rock, the birthplace of the city of Luxembourg,

are among the many highlights of a visit to Luxembourg. As shown here, you

can enjoy a splendid view of the upper and lower town from the arrow slits.

From March to October you can visit the fabulous galleries daily

between 10 am and 5 pm.

The contemporary response to the much revered

fortifications of the city of Luxembourg is located in

the European Quarter of Kirchberg Plateau.

Well-known architects such as the New Yorker

Richard Meier or the Chinese-American architect

Ieoh Ming Pei have left their mark here. Discover

an impressive architectural spectacle and be blown

away by the unique artistic concept of the Musée

d’art moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM)!

The street lights in the Kirchberg area, which were

designed by British architect Norman Foster, are

strongly contemporary and accentuate the futuristic

look of the European Quarter.

Luxembourg, a bastion of contemporary art and architecture!

… ICON OF CONTEMPORARY ART

MUSEUMSMILEDespite its small size, the city of Luxembourg has a large number of museums

and art galleries. If you join their locations by drawing on a map, a smile will

appear. Luckily the distance is not really a mile, and so the easy

accessibility of the locations, but above all the variety and originality of

these seven cultural establishments, make a visit unmissable.

With the founding of what was once the largest

private broadcaster in Europe – Radio Luxembourg

– in the city park, the former fortress city made

radio history. Consequently this pioneering spirit

has been continued today in the multimedia age.

Discover an e-City which has no fear of rising up

to today's challenges of technological sophistica-

tion and which, being a major multilingual business

hub, is able to provide services to locals as well as

to foreign visitors in several languages. As an inter-

national finance centre the city has always met the

challenges of the time.

Luxembourg's wide range of business activities has

expanded to include numerous holding and trust

companies, just like well-known insurance and

electronic trading companies.

Luxembourg, a forward thinking business city!

HOTCITYDiscover the largest outdoor and indoor WiFi network in Luxem-

bourg, which enables you to access the internet and various free web services

(Apps). HOTCITY has two main features: access to the HOTCITY portal and access

to the internet. The HOTCITY portal offers a wide choice of applications which can make everyday life in the city easier for you. You can gain access

to these services using any WiFi-enabled device (mobile phone, smart phone,

iPod Touch, etc.) completely free of charge. Thanks to HOTCITY you have

the opportunity to use the internet.

A walk across the city walls along the “Chemin

de la Corniche“ makes every photographer's

heart beat faster. The spectacular view includes a thousand years of urban

history, from Luxembourg's origins at the Bock

promontory to the newest buildings at Place

de l'Europe in the Kirchberg district.

11EXPERIENCE LUXEMBOURG!

Together with Brussels and Strasbourg, Luxem-

bourg is one of the European Union's three main

cities and the seat of many European institutions.

And that is no coincidence. Luxembourg is not just a

founding member of the EU, but the former fortress

city was also the scene of crucial decision-making

during the European integration process. Whilst

the treaties that founded the European Coal and

Steel Community (ECSC) were signed in the city hall,

sessions of the ECSC high authority were held at a

Wilhelmine-style building, which is located in the

area surrounding the railway station.

And at the foot of the Kirchberg Plateau, the most

obvious showcase for the EU institutions domiciled

in Luxembourg, stands the birthplace of one of the

founding fathers of Europe, Robert Schuman.

Where better than in cosmopolitan Luxembourg

could the desire for a unified Europe have been

articulated?

Luxembourg will hold the Presidency of the Council

of the European Union in the second half of 2015, i.e.

for a six-month period.

Luxembourg, the European idea lives here!

the historic locations where it all began over a century ago: the city hall, the

Cercle Municipal, the Maison de l’Europe, the Robert Schuman birthplace, the conference venue for the Council of the European Union, the

European Parliament, the European Court of Auditors, the European

school, the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, the European

Investment Bank and the Robert Schuman memorial. Europe in pocket format and also with a tour guide can be booked at any time at the LCTO.

The colour green is not just the colour of hope, but

it is also a constant in Luxembourg's cityscape, as

half of the city consists of green spaces. In the city's

big parks you will not only discover a wealthy flora

but you can also get away from the hustle and bus-

tle of the city centre. In what was once known as

“the town of roses“, green oases often appear out

of nowhere.

The Old Town of the City of Roses often conceals

unexpected oases of greenery: from the old cloister

gardens in the Alzette Valley, where even artichokes

and figs can be grown, to the sand dunes covered

in luxuriant vegetation on the edge of the Kirchberg

plateau.

Sport and fitness fans are also well catered for in

the idyllic green areas. The 152 km long urban cy-

cle network is part of the ecological focus of a city

which specifically promotes pushbikes and environ-

mental awareness. The city possesses an extensive

cycle hire system, where you can hire “vel'oH!” bikes

at over 70 stations.

Children are welcome in the green heart of the city

too and can romp around to their heart's content on

a large pirate ship.

Luxembourg, the green city with a heart!

BIKE TOURISM: FOUR CYCLING CIRCUITSTHROUGH THE CAPITAL OF LUXEMBOURG

the capital via four cycling routes, whether under their own steam or

accompanied by an official guide from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office.

The bikes can be hired from Biisserwee, 8, in the Grund neighbourhood.

MODERN TECHNOLOGY IN HISTORIC GARB: “CERCLE CITÉ”Meet in the heart of the city of Luxembourg, at the time-honoured “Cercle Munici-

pal”, which has marked the history of the capital city like no other build-

ing. Here, where Richard Strauss once directed his Don Juan and crowned

heads were invited to gala dinners, you and your guests or conference members

will be in best company. At the “Cercle“, which reopened its doors in 2011, there

are rooms available for up to 50 people and the large hall for up to 300 people.

The “Cercle” is linked to the “Cité” buildings complex – the library-media library, a lounge and an auditorium with a capacity for 142 people, which

is equipped with a top quality audiovisual system – by a glazed gangway.

EXPERIENCE LUXEMBOURG!16

There is always a reason to come to Luxembourg:

whether it is for the typical Luxembourg folk festivals

such as Éimaischen or Schueberfouer, or to visit one

of the many cultural events happening throughout

the year.

Apart from its main touristic function, the Luxem-

bourg City Tourist Office also organises a large

number of popular events and concerts. “Summer

in the city” is a series of events, which presents visi-

tors of the city with a huge amount of choice.

Whether you like to party until dawn, or prefer to

have a quiet picnic in the park of Villa Vauban, or

whether you like to indulge in one of Luxembourg's

numerous delis: your time in Luxembourg will be a

pleasure for all your senses.

Luxembourg, a vibrant meeting place for culture fans!

GRAND DUCHY CULTURE AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE

THE SPECIAL TIP FOR SUMMER: BY REQUEST OF THE GRAND DUKE When Luxembourgers talk about the “Count of Luxembourg” they usually refer to

Count Siegfried, who was the founder not only of the House of Luxembourg, but

also of the country. Alternatively, they could also be talking about the counts of

Luxembourg, who bore the German. Today the head of state is the Grand Duke.

The Grand Duke's Palace, the state residence of the Grand Duke has one

of the most beautiful facades in the city, in the Flemish Renaissance style (16th C.).

The splendid interiors and sumptuous furnishings (with light

installations by the designer Ingo Maurer, amongst other things) can be viewed during the summer months and give a royal insight into the Luxembourg

monarchy. More information can be found from May onwards at www.lcto.lu

There's no such thing as a summer

slump in Luxembourg! From June through

to September, the open air festival season is at its best. Every

weekend, hundreds, even thousands of

visitors flock into the capital city in order

to enjoy the free concerts in the centre.

Luxembourg boasts a thriving and dynamic

music scene. Every year, more than 300 free open air concerts are organised

in the city centre, ranging from the majestic

performance of the Orchestre Philharmonique

de Luxembourg at the Place Guillaume II to

smaller jazz or classical music ensembles at

the Place d'Armes.

European institutions there have been concerts which

were initiated and organised by the European officials.

Whilst the musical encounters of the 1960s took place

26.02 – 08.03.2015LUXEMBOURG CITY FILM FESTIVALDid you know that Luxembourg also has a highly

respected cinema scene? To pay homage to the

seventh art in particular at the Filmland complex

in Luxembourg, the city welcomes you to the large

cinema in the “Discovery Zone”. For this mission the

Film Festival is drawing upon the most important

points from its previous recipes for success: an offi-

cial selection of the best national and international

feature films (with several European and internatio-

nal premieres), documentary films and a geogra-

phic focus. At the heart of the event is the youth

programme (6 to 18 years). This provides numerous

workshops and demonstrations in the presence of

actors and directors. A regular “meeting point” for

the public and for festival guests is the “Ratskeller”

in Cercle Cité. www.discoveryzone.lu

revered for over two centuries, in particular during

the Lenten period, in the church of St. Johann in the

Grund.

MARCH – MAY 2015JAZZ AND WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL "PRINTEMPS MUSICAL"Start spring in Luxembourg with an exquisite musical

experience! In 2015 the renowned “Printemps Musical

– Festival de Luxembourg” is also laying on the best

that jazz and world music have to offer. Internatio-

nal world stars and new talents too are appearing in

the various music halls in Luxembourg’s capital city. In

more than 30 years the festival has developed into a

real “evergreen” without which it is hard to imagine the

Luxembourg culture scene. And so spring can begin! www.printempsmusical.lu

MARCH – OCTOBER 2015BOCK CASEMATESDiscover the subterranean fortifications! The forti-

fied bulwarks and the equally steeped in history old

town enjoy worldwide renown. In 1994 they were

added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

APRIL – SEPTEMBER 2015PLËSS IN CONCERTWhat would the city of Luxembourg be without its

music kiosk at the Place d’Armes? Since 1875 the

various music pavilions have watched music bands

file past at the “most beautiful salon in the city”. “It

is touching that we are attached to the kiosk and

consider it an essential element of the city’s pres-

tige. It is the excuse for public life being focussed

in one place, where every week at a specific time

the inhabitants walk up and down to the sounds of

the music”, wrote Batty Weber as long ago as 1920.

Between Easter and September 2015 the Luxem-

bourg City Tourist Office is organising around 200

free concerts at the Place d’Armes, which will take

place at set times. At lunchtimes you will be offered

classical music on Wednesdays and jazz on Fridays.

Every evening at 08:30 pm, as well as on Saturdays

and Sundays at 11:00 am, 4:00 pm and 08:30 pm the

“Plëss” will be at the concert hall. www.lcto.lu

EASTER MONDAY 06.04.2015ÉIMAISCHENEaster Monday in Luxembourg is not to be missed,

for the Easter meeting of the Emmaus youths unfolds

in Luxembourg with a unique folk festival, the so

called “Éimaischen”. In the UNESCO protected old

town you will hear merry twittering when the “Péck-

villercher” – bird-shaped whistling pipes made of

terracotta – are sold on the folk market stalls. There

is a heavy crowd from early in the morning because

people want to get hold of the best examples of the

“Péckvillercher”. And there are also plenty of things

to snack on! www.vdl.lu

25.04 – 10.05.2015OCTAVE NOTRE-DAMEThe largest religious festival in the country lasts – in

contrast to what the name “Octave” suggests – not

for eight but for fourteen days. During the natio-

nal pilgrimage to our Beloved Lady of Luxembourg

you can experience a part of Luxembourg tradition

where, in addition to the religious cultural event,

the popular annual market “Mäertchen” also takes

place at Place Guillaume II and Place de la Consti-

tution. The smells of waffles and of the carnival are

mixed in with the Marian sounds and the noise of

the festive bell: that’s how we do pilgrimages in

Luxembourg! And traditionally on the final Sunday

the Grand Ducal family, the representatives of public

affairs and the city council also follow the miracu-

lous image, which has been honoured since 1678

as the patron of the city and country, through the

streets of the old town. During the “Octave” “baked

fish” delicacies, etc., are sold at the “Mäertchen”.

JUNE – AUGUST 2015KLASSIK AM PARKWith this summery open air concert in the beautiful

green spaces of the Villa Vauban park the Luxem-

bourg City Tourist Office is expanding the scope of

its free lunchtime concerts. The aim of the organi-

sers is to offer classical music outdoors and to pre-

sent the loveliest corner of the capital city to both

inhabitants and visitors in a new light and with a

fantastic ambience. The listeners can then discover

new musical horizons informally during their lunch

break. Simply listen in and switch off! www.lcto.lu

21.06 – 09.09.2015SUMMER IN THE CITYSummer in Luxembourg is rhythmic, hot and colour-

ful. The open air summer campaign by the city of

amazing mood on the eve of the National Holiday!

A large folk festival brings the city to life – and the

acts to imposing performances in the squares, from

interactive forms of performance to classic staging,

mobile marionettes and puppet theatres, off-beat

21.08 – 09.09.2015SCHUEBERFOUERWelcome to the carnival of superlatives: the biggest

folk festival of the Greater Region – with up to two

fouer” is not only “higher, faster, further” but its

historical origin as an annual market in the city of

Luxembourg is today seen even more so – and this

is unique in the Greater Region – in the restaurants

and the flea market stalls. John the Blind, count

of Luxembourg and king of Bohemia, founded the

“Schueberfouer” in the year 1340. You really haven’t

been to the “Schueberfouer” if you haven’t eaten the

traditional “gebaakene Fësch” or the “Grompereki-

13.05.2015 – 03.01.2016SYMBOLS – LANGUAGEWITHOUT WORDSColours, systems of symbols and indeed objects

have symbolic power and are used for non-verbal

communication and orientation.

This can be anything from the little sun with the slo-

gan “Nuclear Power, No Thanks” via a headscarf or

a pair of jeans to the attachment of a padlock to a

bridge as a sign of one’s love.

The exhibition sheds light on the expressive power

of symbols in everyday life, culture and politics.

Such symbols also reveal much about a society

and its norms, values, ideals and fears. Mimicry,

gestures, clothing and language are also used to

send out individual messages. On show are around

600 photographs, interactive stations, media instal-

lations and individual exhibits.

MUSÉE D’ART DE LA VILLE DE LUXEMBOURG

APRIL – SEPTEMBER 2015 August Sander / Michael Somoroff:Absence of Subject“Absence of Subject” by Michael Somoroff (*1957) is a

poignant homage to the monumental work “People

of the 20th Century” of the legendary German photo-

grapher August Sander (1876-1964). It is a thoughtful

and passionate meditation on memory, imagination,

human resilience and creativity. “Absence of Subject”

lets you revisit August Sander’s work allowing you to

understand the richness of his intent. In each of the

historical pictures, Michael Somoroff has digitally

erased the subject, the portrait, retaining only the

background. Once a secondary fragment, these now

become the primary motivator. Seemingly simple at

first, this is a complex elliptical ambitious work com-

prised of 40 photographs and seven animations as

well as 40 August Sander original photographs.

The exhibition is part of the European Month of Photography 2015.

OCTOBER 2015 - APRIL 2016Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (1736-1810), engravingsJean-Jacques de Boissieu, a highly talented draughts-

man and etcher, was widely regarded as the “French

Rembrandt” by his contemporaries. Even though today

he is mostly known to specialists of the art world, his

landscapes, everyday scenes und extraordinary cha-

racter studies still impress the beholder. This exhibi-

tion is one of the few monographic ones that have

ever been dedicated to this outstanding artist.

our society increase, the influence of designers on

our behaviour and opinions is amplified. The emer-

24.01 – 03.05.2015M+M – 7 TAGEFor a few years, M+M (Martin de Mattia and Marc

Weis) have been developing a work of art focused

on the media and their mechanisms, not only ana-

lysing modes of communication but also the manner

in which these are perceived and "consumed" in our

society of today. To strengthen their message, the

artists adopt a visual, formal language which is very

close to their subject and they don't shy away from

producing videos in an almost cinematographic man-

ner. The images thus have a quality which can be

immediately identified with this medium which is then

reworked and manipulated by the artists. 16.05 – 06.09.2015PHANTOM OF CIVILIZATIONThe exhibition “Phantom of Civilization” features the

work of three Taiwanese artists: Wu Chi-Tsung, Wang

10.10.2015 – 15.02.2015IMPERIUM ROMANUMAlfred Seiland, Professor of Photography at the Stutt-

leading modern photographers. For many years now,

he has been visiting antique sites in the former Roman

Empire, capturing them with his analogue, large-

format camera. They are often difficult to access –

some are not public places and otherwise hidden

from tourists.

Seiland's photographs mirror famous showplaces

of history with their architecture and works of art.

The photographs confront the viewer with themes

that shed light on the conflict between antiquity and

modernity. Seiland condenses moments into perfect

compositions, employing colour like a painter. The

artistic flair of this master of large-format photography

makes some people smile, but others unsettled, as

they tell time and again of the destruction of antique

legacies by mankind.

Wrongly. The exhibition that the National Museum of

in ancient Egypt, but on almost every continent, and

The Musée Dräi Eechelen – forteresse, histoire, iden-

tités, inaugurated in 2012, is situated in the extraordi-

nary restored keep of the historic fort Thüngen, built

in 1732-33.

Each of the casemates in the permanent exhibition

illustrates a different era of the fortress and its influ-

ence on the country’s history. The tour begins in the

Middle Ages with the capture of the city of Luxem-

bourg by the Burgundians in 1443, and ends with the

construction of the Pont Adolphe in 1903. More than

600 objects and original documents, many of which

have never been shown before, highlight the diversity

of the collections. A special room houses a selection

of historical photographs which present the fortress

immediately before and after it was razed. The his-

toric building of the museum constitutes in itself an

important element of the permanent exhibition. With

its impressive underground galleries and mines, it

corresponds to a large extent to the original condition

during the last phase of its expansion in 1836/1837.

The visitor is invited to explore important themes

of the permanent exhibition through an interactive

database and audio-visual documentation in the

multimedia room. Free audio guides supply detailed

explanations for many objects in French, English, Ger-

provides the facilities for conferences or screenings in

relation to the exhibitions. The first floor is dedicated to

10 YEARS

PHILHARMONIE LUXEMBOURG IN 2015

The very first visitors entered on Sunday 26 June at

02:00 pm. There followed a whole week of musical

festivities to mark the opening – with numerous artists,

both professional and amateur, from Luxembourg

and elsewhere, including the OPL and outstanding

guest orchestras and ensembles in Classical, Roman-

tic, and new music, with premieres, jazz, world music,

and a big party with a star DJ to round everything off.

The rest is history: the three-thousandth event took

place in autumn 2013; the 1.5-millionth visitor is expec-

ted in autumn 2014; and in the meantime, many of our

listeners have been quite a bit younger than the Phil-

harmonie.

So the party to which we are inviting you in the sum-

mer of 2015 will be, to some extent, younger and even

more diverse than the opening ten years ago – among

other things, because the Luxembourg music scene

has developed remarkably over the last ten years.

Please make a note of the dates around the birthday –

we are looking forward to celebrating with you!
