Introduction and Purpose of the User Guide

This user guide accompanies the SPSS file for the Pregnancy and Maternity Discrimination and Disadvantage: Experience of Mothers survey 2016.

The survey was commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) commissioned a programme of research to investigate the prevalence and nature of pregnancy and maternity-related discrimination and disadvantage in the workplace. The results in this report are based on survey interviews with 3,254 mothers and 3,034 employers. The two surveys cover the views and experiences of employers and mothers on a range of issues related to managing pregnancy, maternity leave and mothers returning to work from maternity leave. Please see the Pregnancy and Maternity Discrimination and Disadvantage: Experience of Mothers survey main report and Technical Report for findings from the research and details of how the survey was conducted. The purpose of this user guide is to outline how key analysis variables were created and explain how the figures reported on were derived, enabling users of the SPSS to recreate analyses. The data dictionary maps out each variable within the SPSS file and its origin from the questionnaire.

WEIGHTS 811 Weighting

Apply to look at weighted data.

The weighting was performed in two stages: at stage one the opt-in sample was weighted to match the profile of the eligible population using a Random Iterative Method (RIM) weighting approach. The RIM

weights used were mother’s age; Output Area Classification (a classification which groups output

areas (or datazones in Scotland) into clusters based on similar demographic characteristics); and, region. This stage ensured the opt-in sample matched the eligible population profile as closely as possible. Stage two weighting involved deleting ineligible

cases from the weighted opt-in sample (produced in Stage one) to give an estimate of the population of

eligible mothers. Following this, multivariate analysis (Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection or ‘CHAID’) was

undertaken to determine which combination of the variables available for all eligible records best

predicted whether or not they completed a telephone survey interview. Regression analysis

was run to determine probabilities of completion for each record which resulted in a Stage two weight;

the inverse of the probability of a mother taking part in the survey. Stage one and Stage two weights

were combined to give a final weight.
