Results and Discussions:

In this experiment, we have observed that water and acetic were miscible with each other. Acetic acid and chloroform were miscible with each other. However, chloroform and water were partially miscible with each other.

In the calculation of percentage by weight of the three components, as the fraction of Chloroform decreases and the fraction of water increases, the required acetic acid increases to make the solution clear. The more acetic acid added the faster of getting a one-phase region above the curve.

The Stokes-Roozeboom diagram showed the three-phase region of the three components. Only the first three data were plotted, because if we graph the succeeding values, it will go beyond the curve. The sample number four onwards already exhibited a one phase region.

Any error in this experiment was attributed to the addition of acetic acid. We were tasked to stop the addition of acetic acid until the solution no longer turns cloudy when shaken vigorously. The excess acetic acid would result in lesser percentage by weight of water and chloroform.

Conclusion and Recommendation:

The phase diagram of three components liquid system was observed in this experiment. Acetic acid and water, and Acetic acid and chloroform were miscible with each other. Chloroform and water are partially miscible with each other. As we increased the amount of acetic acid, the more miscible the three components with each other became. The region below the curve showed the two phase region and the region above the curve is the one phase region.

Analysis of Data:

In the computation of weight of liquid, we used the density of water, acetic acid and chloroform. We multiply the density and the volume to get the mass. And to get the percentage composition of the three components, we divided the mass of each one component by the total mass of the three components.
