A. WARMER Ask the students the following questions:
1. If you had been an explorer in the 19th
century, what part of the world would you
most like to have explored?
2. If you could have taken only 5 items with you, what items would you have taken?
Explain your choices.
B. QUIZ Get the students to do the following quiz. Either as a competition or through discussion
with very small classes or individuals.
1. Who discovered Australia? Captain Cook
2. Who discovered America? Christopher Columbus
3. Who discovered the Victoria Falls? David Livingstone
4. Who was the first person to reach the South Pole? Roald Amundson (1911)
5. What did Amelia Earhart do? She was the first woman to fly over the Atlantic
6. What did Marco Polo discover? He is credited with discovering the Orient
7. What is Sir Edmund Hillary famous for? Being the first climber to reach the summit
of Mount Everest
8. What were the Spanish explorers of the America’s called? Conquistadors
C. VOCABULARY Go through the words with the students. They appear in the same sequence in the story
they are about to read. Make sure they understand all the words. Explain to them that
they are about to read a story about an explorer who arrives at an African village for the
first time (the villagers have never seen a European before). They need to imagine what
happens, and tell the story, using the words in the same sequence as they appear. The
first student starts the story by using the first word, the second student continues the
story with the second word etc. etc.
D. READING Get the students to read the text. If you want to make the task more challenging for
them, then cut up the article into paragraphs and get them to put them into the correct
order.
E. ROLE PLAY WITH VOCAB REVISION Write the vocabulary onto small pieces of paper and place them face down on the table.
Get the students to do a role play of an explorer arriving in an African village for the first
time (the villagers conveniently know English), but in the dialogue each student has to
pick up a vocabulary word and use it.
