POLICIES & PROCEDURES Morning Classes — 8:00 am to 9:00 am

Students should report to their assigned classrooms at 8:00 am. We ask that parents/caregivers walk their children to their class for the first few weeks. At 9:00 am, when morning classes conclude, the children will line up outside as they normally would when arriving early. They will re-enter the building at 9:10 am with the rest of the students. Afternoon Classes — 3:50 pm to 4:50 pm

The children will assemble after school in the hall outside Room #5 for attendance check and will be escorted to their classrooms by their instructors at 3:50 pm. Classes will be dismissed to Mr. Jarvis in the hall at 4:50 pm, where he will wait with them until they are picked up. Please be sure to arrive for pick-up on time at 4:50 pm. Absences — Please call 973-509-4200 and leave a message for Addison Jarvis to report your child’s absence from a scheduled Hillside Explorers class. REGISTRATION Please help your children choose classes that interest them, as there are NO REFUNDS once the semester begins. Fees — Fees for classes include materials where noted and necessary. The fees for classes vary according to the number of classes scheduled for each course; supplies, vendors and other factors. Scholarships — Partial or full tuition is available for children of qualifying families. Please check the Scholarship Requested box on the registration form. There is a limit of one scholarship per child. Scholarship eligibility is subject to review in the Principal’s Office. Registration Form — Please complete a separate registration form for each student you are registering. The registration form is also available on-line. Enclose completed forms and payment in an envelope marked HILLSIDE EXPLORERS and return in your child’s backpack or place in the EXPLORERS box in the front office. Classes fill on a first come, first served basis; don’t get shut out! Class Confirmation — The session begins on Monday January 13, 2014. If your child signs up for a class that must be cancelled due to under-enrollment, you will be contacted. Otherwise, classes will run as noted on the schedule. Please Note: You will NOT receive individual class confirmations. Class Cancellation — There are no afternoon classes on Early Dismissal days. If the school has a Delayed Opening because of snow, morning classes will be cancelled as well. See attached chart for schedule of class dates.

in a sealed envelope marked HILLSIDE EXPLORERS

by or before Wednesday January 8, 2014 to your child’s teacher, or

to the EXPLORERS box in the school’s main office.

All classes are subject to schedule modification or cancellation

due to under enrollment. You WILL be contacted if a class your child selected has been cancelled or is filled.

Refunds for cancelled classes will be issued as quickly as possible.

Policy Concerning Late Pickups — Repeated late pickups will not be tolerated! Explorers PM classes end at 4:50 pm. Please report to the school on time, and go to the hallway outside Room 5 (lower level by the cafeteria) to pick up your child. Because of past abuse of the pickup schedule, we are instituting a late pickup penalty fee of $10 for every 10 minutes past 5:00 pm that you are late. The children of parents and caregivers who are consistently late will be asked to leave the program and there will be no refund.

  Course  Descriptions  

 Art:  Shape it, Cut it, Make it      Holly Korus-Jenkins Hillside Parent Tuesdays- 3:50-4:50pm $120

For the super creative student to the kid who craves to be more artistic, this class will open the door. They will learn everything from working with wire, yarn and clay to paper art, decoupage, basic needle work and papier-mâché. Loads of creative things you want your child to learn.

 

Beading 101:     Charmed Beading Studio , Montclair Wednesdays- 3:50-4:50pm $135

Charmed Beading Studio of Montclair has joined our team and will provide an opportunity for our students that are interested in jewelry designing. They will be able to create: necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, bookmarks, and key chains with an amazing variety of beads. This class is not just for girls!

       Bricks 4 Kids: Maria Medusa, Bricks for Kids Wednesdays 3:50-4:50pm $160

This is not your everyday LEGO program! Designed and created by teachers, architects and engineering professionals, our hands on curriculum introduce children 3-13+ to concepts of engineering, architecture, and mechanics using LEGO bricks. Lessons from math, science, language arts, and social studies are integrated and discussed. Themes such as Transportation, Space, Inventions and Machines, Robotics and more provide variety and ensure a high level of interest and enthusiasm.    

Chess in a Nutshell: Steve Moctezuma Tuesdays 8:00-9:00am & Tuesdays 3:50-4:50pm $120

Chess is easy to learn and fun to play! This course is for novices AND experienced players. Students will hone their skills by playing practice games with their peers. Chess promotes good sportsmanship, problem solving skills, self-discipline, and confidence. Steve Moctezuma has taught chess for many years at several schools (including Hillside) in and around Montclair. He is a summer camp director, and a certified United States Chess Federation Tournament Director.

Cooking: What’s for Dinner: Chef It Up Tuesdays 3:50-4:50pm $125

Chef It Up teaches age appropriate cooking skills and students leave each week feeling like a top chef! each week the menu changes but the fun never ends. We will prepare mini versions of some delicious dinner options to cook up in class and hopefully they can recreate at home as well! Some of the foods this time around will be Meatless Tacos; Veggie Strombolis; Pasta; Garlic Bread; Salads and more! It's sure to be tons of fun!

 Cool Crazy Science:

Mad Science Mondays 3:50-4:50pm $135 Join us afterschool in the Mad Science club for some COOL AND CRAZY SCIENCE! Become a detective, an engineer, a chemist, a film maker and more! Take apart the earth as you explore volcanoes, or become a toy maker as you explore the science of toys! Create crazy cool concoctions in the kitchen as you cook up chemistry, and prepare to race as you engineer your very own drag racer! Every week we explore a new and exciting topic and create something to take home! Let’s get cool and crazy with science!

DRUMS, DRUMS, AND MORE DRUMS! (4th  Graders  ONLY!!)  

Louis D’Amico, Hillside Teacher Mondays 8am-9am $120

If you LOVE Drums of Thunder…Hillside’s own, Mr. D’Amico has decided to teach this exciting class to those students that are interested in learning the vigorous rhythmic sequences and skills to take it to the next level. This is an opportunity for those that are passionate in competing for Drums of Thunder, (no guarantees) and love to drum.

Fashion Passion

Studio Kids Art Tuesdays 3:50-4:50pm $130 Learn how to draw and design fashion! Starting with the fashion figure, designers will be taught how to draw, design and illustrate outfits, accessories and create a line of fashion! There will be minimal hand sewing in this class, but plenty of fun and design!

 Fencing:

Lilov Fencing Academy Mondays 3:50-4:50pm $160 En Garde! This is a rare opportunity to learn the basic skills of Fencing. Vladimir Lilov has been teaching Fencing for over 30 years and he is back by popular demand! All skill levels are welcome! All necessary equipment will be provided.

 Golf:

TGA Premiere Jr. Golf Tuesdays 3:50-4:50pm $160 The TGA Premier Jr. Golf after-school enrichment program’s mission is to make golf accessible, affordable and fun for all ages and skill levels. We strive to establish a lifelong interest in golf by engaging young people in a structured golf curriculum that promotes character development within an after-school setting. The program not only teaches students about the game of golf, it teaches them about the Nine Core Values: confidence, respect, judgment, responsibility, sportsmanship, courtesy, honesty, integrity, and perseverance. It’s time to “tee off” and learn something new!

 

 Hip Hop Dance:

Miss Ashley, Sounds of Brazil NYC Mondays 8-9am $120 This is one of our most popular classes for boys and girls. Hip Hop is returning to Hillside School and so is our dynamic instructor Miss Ashley, from Sounds of Brazil in New York. You will learn the latest moves through choreographed dances accompanied by great music. All Students will be invited to perform in the Hillside Dance Benefit Concert.

 Improv Acting:

Hillside parent, Angela Dohrmann Mondays 3:50-4:50pm $115 Learn the basics of improvisational comedy with professional actor and teaching artist, Angela Dohrmann who has joined our Hillside community and is perhaps best known for playing Donna Chang, “The Chinese Woman”, on Seinfeld. In this class, students will explore and discover new parts of themselves, gain confidence, and have fun! “Thinking will be discouraged and Mistakes will be embraced” in this Improvisational Acting class. Class size will not exceed 10 students.

   iPad Drawing

Studio Kids Art Wednesdays 3:50-4:50pm $130 Using the iPad is a great way to integrate new technology with art! This class is structured around students learning how to draw, how to layer and use the iPad to create new and exciting artwork. Emphasis is still on the skill of drawing- something that every artist will need to know, but using the programs and apps available can change the medium in to something very new. School will provide iPads, and apps are an additional cost (usually around $10). Stylus is provided by StudioKids Art, or can be purchased by us as well.

Kickboxing

Jerilyn Mullen, (Hillside Nurse) Tuesdays 8am-9am $120 Come join the fun and learn kickboxing basics! This is a high energy (NO PHYSICAL CONTACT) workout that includes jumping jacks, kicking and punching to high energy music!!! Start your day by waking up your body the fun way!!

 Lyrically Speak and Dance :

Clarissa Newby-Phillips, Hillside Dance Educator Wednesdays 3:50-4:50 $120 Students will learn to use their entire body to tell a story, and learn how to express themselves to a beat, song, or word. All Students will be invited to perform in the Hillside Dance Benefit Concert.

Rainbow Loom

Amanda Mayoff Wednesdays 3:50-4:50pm $130 We will all work together as a group, all at the same pace and each of us will make the same bracelets using the same colors & patterns to assure best learning of correct technique & keeping the group all together & cohesive. Each student needs their own RAINBOW LOOM & hook. Rubber bands will be supplied weekly. Amanda is a professional textile designer with a BA in fibers & fabrics, surface design, textiles & weaving. Rainbow Loom is really fun, great for practicing Fine Details, and Patterns. It’s colorful and highly recommended to anyone interested, a great activity for both boys & girls.

SPORTS Galore

Tracy Lever, Hillside PE Wednesdays 8-9AM $120 How would you like to jump start your brain in the morning, get your energy flowing, and start your day with some fun sports games? Do you like soccer, ultimate football, basketball, hockey, volleyball, whiffle ball, toukball, or home run ball? Why not give it a try and see how much fun and energy you will have during the day, maybe be able to concentrate more in class! So sign up for some energizing competition with Mrs. Lever and have a ball!!!!

STOMP and THUMP Dance

Brother Cedric Mondays 3:50-4:50 pm $120 Pound the Earth with your feet to the RHYTHMS of the heart. Students will learn how to move to the Heart of the Drum with Brother Cedric. Dance and Drum together will provide an unforgettable experience and a chance to learn different styles of dance movement

and explore their creativity. TAP Dance (GROOVE, HOOF, AND TAP)

Maurice Chestnut, Master Tapper Tuesdays 3:50-4:50pm $120 If you have watched Happy Feet or Happy Feet 2, then you know what Hoof , Groove and Tap are. Rappa tap tap with your Happy Feet and have a great time! Learn how to glide and find your Heart Song with master Tapper Maurice Chestnut. All Students will be invited to perform in the Hillside Dance Benefit Concert.

Watercolor Painting

Studio Kids Art  Mondays 3:50-4:50pm $130  Learn about the variety of ways you can put watercolor paint to paper to achieve the effects you want. Starting with a flat wash you can explore the techniques of tones and textures on dry or wet paper. See various brush handling skills that can inspire you. This class is great for learning the basics of watercolor painting.
