explosive growth in american recycling industry
TRANSCRIPT
Rising Demand for Curbside
Recycling
Cities are collecting old and worn clothing to
keep them out of landfills.
Recycling Industry Targeting Clothes
Used apparel that is regularly thrown away by
Americans can often be reused or recycled.
Several local governments have begun curbside
pickup programs to collect used clothing, shoes
and linens.
These programs serve to reduce landfill costs and
the textiles are either sold or repurposed to serve
other purposes such as cleaning rags or insulation.
Business Contributions
Private companies are also taking part
in the recycling surge.
Many businesses are placing
collection bins in parking lots and gas
stations.
Certain retailers are using in-store
bins and exchanged customer store
vouchers for used clothing.
Recycling Habits in the U.S.
• Average American throws
away 70 pounds of clothing
and other textiles every
year.
• Cheap manufacturing
contributes to fast fashion
trends, which result in
clothing being thrown away
at an increased rate.
• Most of the items being
thrown away are in poor
condition and are believed
to be unusable.
Textiles: Reuse and Recycle
Almost all textiles can be recycled or
reused in some way no matter the
condition.
Nearly Half of donated clothes are
sold for reuse. Especially overseas
because of a sharp rise in demand.
