Mass Book for 2015 is Now Open

OUR LITURGY

In today’s first reading, Philip is preaching and healing in Samaria. In the second reading Peter instructs us to make Christ Lord in our hearts, to make defense of our faith gently, and to be righteous. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us to love him by keeping his commandments and promises the coming of the Holy Spirit.

From the Pastor’s Desk This week we contemplate two major events in our Salvation; one we will celebrate on Thursday with the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven, and the one we are anticipating (with today’s readings) ten days after the Ascension: the Coming of the Holy Spirit. As we saw in last week’s Gospel, the Apostles were upset about Jesus’ departure from this life and they refused to see who Jesus is, as Phillip asks Him to show them the Father. Phillip probably asks this question because he wants some reassurance that all will be OK, for if Jesus had to leave, at least He could show them the Father to protect and lead them. But Jesus comforts them by telling then that in seeing Him, they had already seen the Father, and to continue to comfort them, He tells them that He is not going to leave them orphans. For God will send them and us another Advocate who is the Spirit of Truth, whom non-believers will not be able to accept and believers will not need explanations to accept.

The Advocate is none other than the Holy Spirit and through the Spirit, we know that God is always with us and this is the cause for our Hope! Even when we feel or think that we are alone, God the Holy Spirit is there to strengthen and guide us. All we have to do is accept God’s help and be open to God’s presence. That is why Jesus, as He is ascending into Heaven, tells His Apostles not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit comes upon them. When the Spirit comes, they go out and spread the Good News and this news tells humanity that there is Hope!

Remember on Thursday we are not coming to the end of the story, just a new chapter in the story. For the Chapter dealing with Christ’s Earthly Ministry is coming to an end (so to speak), and it is being followed by the Chapter when Christ’s Ministry is carried out by the Church; the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Please keep in mind that Thursday is a Holy Day of Obligation and as Catholics, we are to mark this day by coming together to celebrate the Eucharist. Please see the

bulletin for the Mass Schedule.

We close with the following prayer:

God our Father, make us joyful in the ascension of your Son Jesus Christ. May we follow Him into a new creation, for His ascension is our glory and our hope. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives, and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Happy Easter

Fr. Mike

Respect Life

Do you know someone who is hurting from an

abortion?

The Life Center of Long Island invites you to attend

its next Rachel’s Vineyard Healing Retreat on the

weekend of June 27-29, 2014. It begins Friday

evening and concludes Sunday afternoon. This

retreat is conducted in English and Spanish.

What is Rachel’s Vineyard?

Rachel's Vineyard is a safe place to renew, rebuild

and redeem hearts broken by abortion. Weekend

retreats offer you a supportive, confidential and non-

judgmental environment where women and men can

express, release and reconcile painful post-abortive

emotions to begin the process of restoration, renewal

and healing.

Rachel's Vineyard can help you find your inner voice.

It can help you experience God's love and

compassion on a profound level. It creates a place

where men and women can share, often for the first

time, their deepest feelings about abortion. You are

allowed to dismantle troubling secrets in an

environment of emotional and spiritual safety.

Rachel's Vineyard is therapy for the soul.

Participants, who have been trapped in anger toward

themselves or others, experience forgiveness. Peace

is found. Lives are restored. A sense of hope and

meaning for the future is finally rediscovered.

For more information contact: Deacon Joe

McNicholas at (516)445-3927 or e-mail:

[email protected] Communication is strictly

confidential.

To learn more about Rachel’s Vineyard look online at:

Thank you to all who generously donated to the baby bottle campaign for the Life Center of Long Island. Anyone who wishes to donate any remaining bottles can drop them off at the rectory during business hours.

THE SPIRITUAL ADOPTION

PROGRAM

Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Joseph Parish family will have the opportunity on May 4/5 to ‘’spiritually’ adopt a child who is newly conceived. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 4,000 babies loose their lives to abor-tion each day. It is these babies that you are being asked to adopt.

All that is required, is that you take a prayer card home, name your baby and pray for that baby and its parents throughout the following months. Write the child’s name in the space provided and return that portion to a special basked that will be placed in the sanctuary area under the display of pictures. Keep the prayer portion as a reminder to pray for that child and his/her family.

You will receive monthly reports through the parish bulletin describing your baby’s development. You will also be able to see in pictures (posted on the altar ) the growth of your baby. We hope you will enjoy seeing these miraculous pictures and learning of the Journey of Life we have all taken, as much as we do.

What does the Catholic Ministries Appeal do with money raised?

Delivers or serves more than 550,000 meals to senior citizens and young families in need.

Assists more than 100,000 families through Parish Outreach centers and soup kitchens.

Ministers to more than 300,000 patients/families in local hospitals through our Office of Hospital Ministry.

Teaches religion to more than 113,000 of our children currently attending public schools.

Educates and forms our future priests and lay leaders.

Brings the Word of God to more than 50,000 students in secular colleges across Long Island.

This is just a sampling of some of the wonderful works which are made possible through the Catholic Ministries

Appeal. If you have given in the past, I hope you will do so again this year; and if you have not given in previous

years, I hope that this is the year that you will begin to support this very necessary and worthwhile Appeal. If

each parish family contributes, together we can make a difference. Won’t you please help us to Serve God by

Serving Others with a donation to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal? Thank you, Fr. Mike

Special Devotion To Our Lady

May devotion to Mary, our Mother, is a time-honored tradition in the Church. To honor Mary we will have the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in the sanctuary in May. Pray the Rosary daily, especially in May and Octo-ber, in your homes and in the Church after 9:00 AM weekday Masses.

Each Thursday in May (May 1, 8, 15, 22 ), from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, we will pray the Rosary, reflect on the Mysteries and the Eucharist with Ex-position of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. On Ascension Thursday, May 29, a Holy Day of Obligation, we will meet at 7:00 PM to pray the Rosary, reflect on the Mysteries, and recite the Litany before the 7:30 PM Mass. We will dedicate the Rosary for your intentions even if you cannot join us on Thursdays. Please call 588-8456 and leave your name and intentions.

Our Lady of Fatima Devotion

The First Saturday of each month is devoted to Our Lady of Fatima. The devotion includes 8:00 AM Mass, Novena to Fatima, the Rosary, Confessions after Mass, and fellowship in Carew Hall at 9:00 AM.

Through your generosity we were able to help more than 160 people throughout the month of March. In these tough economic times we are seeing people of increasing need. On their behalf, we thank you for sharing your own limited resources with your brothers and sisters. "Whenever you did it for the least of my people, you did it for me."
