MOHLAUDI MPHUTHI, Bohlokong, Beth-lehem:

LAND has always been the major source ofsurvival until the arrival of men from farfield. You cannot separate the struggle fromthe land, hence it has become an importantaspect of heritage for the emancipation of Af-ricans.The land issue has not been settled well on

the African continent. To the South Africans, history will judge Mandela as a failure in thisregard, despite winning us international rec-ognition and participation. The dawn of democracy was supposed to be

a landmark drive of land redistribution, butturned out to be a reconciliationphase. Recon-ciliation is a failed political project, as it hasnot scrutinized all angles of bridging the gapbetween blacks and whites.Whites had their millions untouched which

they have benefited from the apartheid re-gime. Blacks has to enter democracy empty-handed except for our leaders whomakemon-ey throughmeans only known to them.Whereis the bridging between people who were hos-tile to each other when met with such a sce-nario? Reparations of blacks would haveserved better if we were aiming at building

a problem-free democratic South Africa. The three ships that entered our shores

withno landhas amassedwealth andvast hec-tares of land – their mission has been accom-plished. They had coined the legislation to ad-vance the course and settle their people. Oneday blacks will wake up asking the question,“Who moved our land?”The majority still struggle to find land

whilst their forefathers once had land. Will-ing buyer willing seller is jocular and will notaddress the landmark cheat of 1913. Knowinghistory very well you still find people todaybeing driven off the land without being givenan alternative. As long as black people are without land,

their part of heritage is missing and anycourse that does not advocate for total redis-tribution of the land is a futile exercise. Peo-ple need to be settled once and for all on theland of their forefathers and Frantz Fanonwas right about the black condition. We have leaders who use their stomach to

think.Having inherited a divided society theyhave done little to eradicate the sad realitiesof the past. All our leaders have accomplished is to stay

in the suburbs and forget about the town-ships.

The struggle cannot be separated from land
