A Definition A computer is an electronic device which is
capable of receiving information (data) in a particular form and of performing a sequence of operations in accordance with a predetermined but variable set of procedural instructions (program) to produce a result in the form of information or signals.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER ? Another definition
A computer is a programmable machine. The two principal characteristics of a computer are: it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).

Definition according to Bangladesh copyright law Computers indicate to any systems that
use mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, magnetic, electro-magnetic, digital, optical or other forms of impulse/signal/data to perform logical, or mathematical operations/tasks

ORIGIN OF THE TERM COMPUTER The term Computer was originated from the
term Compute. The term compute means: calculate, measure, count, or conceptualize. The term compute was originated between 1375 and 1425.
According to these terminologies whoever (machine or human) does the operations such as calculation, measurement, counting, or conceptualization can be called a computer.

Bangladesh started using Computers in the 60’s The first computer was placed on 1964 at Atomic Energy
Commission – IBM 1620, RAM:20 KB, Later Increased to 64KB The scientists at Atomic Energy Commission and the
students of the Dhaka University used this computer Atomic energy commission placed another computer at Savar
location on 1982-83: IBM Mainframe 4341 The second computer was placed on 1965 at Adomjee Jute
Mills, IBM – 1400 series Later United Bank (Janata Bank) used IBM-1900 series After liberation, Bureau of Statistics used IBM 360 series BUET used IBM – 370, and IBM 4300 series computers on

HISTORY OF COMPUTER USAGE IN BANGLADESH
Computers became popular in Bangladesh with the introduction of micro computers i.e. Desktop Computers
On 1982-83, IBM PC Compatible and Apple computers got popularity in Bangladesh
Macintosh computers came to Bangladesh on 1985-86 On 16th may, 1987 the first digital magazine was
published in Bangladesh : Anondo Potro Afterwards, Macintosh was used increasingly in the publishing
industry Also, the use of IBM PC or Compatibles are increasingly
used in personal and official purpose On 1998-99 tax/vat were removed on computers; that
helped to increase the use of computers in Bangladesh
