The Monocacy Aqueduct was begun in 1824 and finished in 1827 as part of the C & 0 Canal construction which was one hundred, eighty-four and a half miles long.

It was one of at least five aqueducts built on the canal, but was the longest. The white sandstone used for the structure was taken from the Johnson Quarry and was painted by cement 11 obtained near Shepardstown. 11

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The C & 0 Canal Aqueduct is a five arch coursed sandstone aqueduct which crosses the Monocacy River and was built for the purpose of carrying the C & 0 Canal traffic over the river.

The aqueduct is supported by six piers, and is four hundred and thirty-eight feet in length.

The aqueduct which is now supported by steel beams is currently undergoing restoration by the National Park Service.

This is the view we saw several years ago of the Monocacy Aqueduct until Agnes came along in 1972 and ripped off the coping (cap) stones and much ul' the railin~. Most of the damage has now been repaired.
