Umhlali Country Club has been voted club of the year by the Club Management Association of South Africa (CMA-SA), proving that even a small club can compete with the big boys.
The club took home R50 000 from club management soft-ware provider and competition sponsor Jonas Africa.Club chairman Mike O’Donovan said the award was a great honour.
“When Umhlali Country Club was founded in 1961, no one could have imagined that some 58 years later it would have evolved into a fully-fledged country club with outstanding sporting facilities and be voted as South Africa’s Club of the Year,” said O’Donovan.
The club started as a humble nine-hole golf course, and as it grew it maintained its identity as a relaxed and fami-ly-oriented country club.
The club’s rich history is important to the the manage-ment and they have shown this through the introduction of Life 50 Awards for members who have completed 50 years of unbroken membership.
“On behalf of my exco colleagues, I wish to congratulate everyone involved in making this award possible, par-ticularly our new general manager Derick Reinke and his staff, former general manager John Boyce, our members, especially those sitting on our committees, and everyone associated with the club. I would also like to congratulate CMASA and RCA Consulting on how they have success-fully revamped the awards criteria to deliver even more objective and transparent awards for the industry,” said O’Donovan.
The CMASA awards recognise the top management at South Africa’s sport and recreation clubs and are the climax of achievement within the industry. Under the new criteria, the awards recognise the efforts of the collective club and not just its outstanding individuals. Umhlali Country Club and golf estate scored an overall 96.5% in the seven pillars of benchmarking and finance, training, legal compliance, environment sustainability, transfor-mation, guest experience and member satisfaction, and communication and participation.
CMASA general manager Janyne Marais said it was a very close contest. “I think what is particularly satisfying for Umhlali Country Club and golf estate is that what made the difference for them was the member survey and mystery guest audit. As a club, the experience of your members and guests is ultimately what you want to be judged on, and also a reflection of the high standards we want to set as an association.”
Club president and founding member John Hulett said winning the award was a great honour and praised O’Do-novan, his executive committee and complimented the Umhlali Country Club staff.
“I, on behalf of all our members, wish to convey our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the work they have put in to achieve this, the highest accolade of 2019,” said Hulett.
On behalf of CMASA & RCA Consulting, we would like to congratulate you on a superb performance in the 2019 CMASA Club of the Year Awards.
We are especially pleased and proud to announce Umhla-li Country Club as the CMASA 2019 CLUB of the YEAR!You have taken the OVERALL top position on 96.50%.Congratulations and well done, this is an amazing achievement.
We would like to thank Jonas for their amazing support of our CMASA Awards as they have sponsored R50 000 to you, the winning club. Jonas has stipulated that this prize money is to be reinvested back into the club, and used specifically for training of staff at your club

It was the first weekend of over 40 Ethekwini league where the not so young braved the heat on Sunday morning.
Both Umhlali sides won their matches. Three couples in a team & 3 matches comprising the best of 13 games.
The 1st side beat a strong Prospect side at home 71 games to 51 overall and the 2nd side beat Coastal Breeze team 74 games to 48 at Windsor Club in Durban.
Interesting to note that the coaching practice provided by Mitzi Bateman & Cindy Bell before the match helped Wayne Atherstone & Mike Papageorge (see pic) to lay a claim for promotion from 3rd Couple to first couple in the 1st team.
News also this year is that John Donnachie and Neville wright travelled to Cape town to compete in the Cape Seniors competition & John increased the entertainment value off the court & in the singles & doubles managing the high Cape winds experienced during the week with his KZN learnt slices.
Neville won the singles draw over 60 section to fly the flag for KZN & Umhlali
pLEASE NOTE: Our Brian ward social tennis tournament is being held on the weekend of the 14th/15th March. There are a few spaces still available. The contact person is Mitzi on 072 135 1057.
Another year begins and we are already into February 2020. I think the older one gets the quicker it goes!
On 16 January 2020 the bowlers held their AGM and the following members were elected to the Committee
Expertly holding the Prospect strong first couple to a remarkable score of 6 games to 7 with lack of pace & timely chirps learnt from Mitzi & Cindy.
