SITE INVESTIGATION AND ASSESSMENT OF AVAILABLE MINERAL RESERVES AT MILE FLAT,

STAFFORDSHIRE

1. INTRODUCTION

Enviroarm Limited were instructed by F G Davis & Sons (Contractors) Ltd to undertake a detailed site investigations by way of trial pitting across the Mile Flat application site, collecting samples and evaluating the grading results for use of the mineral reserve on site. Nine trial pits have been excavated across the site and samples taken from the trial pits throughout the full depth of excavation to assess for potential variability and range materials available on site..

2. THE SITE The proposed application area is situated off Mile Flat, approximately 1km east-south east of Wall Heath town centre, with the site centred at National Grid Reference SO 869 891 (see Location Plan, Figure 1). The mineral extraction inert recycling and landfill area covers some 98,353m2

(9.8 hectares), excluding the former and proposed access areas. Figure 1: Site Location

3. REGIONAL GEOLOGY General

The principal area of outcrop of the pre-Carboniferous formations lies to the west of the River Severn, but there are small inliers near Trimpley, in the southern part of the district, and in the South Staffordshire Coalfield. The oldest rocks, the Wenlock Shales, appear only in cores of the periclinal folds near Dudley and Sedgley. Movements after the deposition of the Lower Old Red Sandstone brought Upper Old Red Sandstone to lie unconformably upon it. Further movements may have also prevented the deposition of the Lower Carboniferous rocks in the district. Silurian rocks therefore form the floor of the South Staffordshire Coalfield and, with those of the Old Red Sandstone, that of the Wyre Coalfield also. The Middle Coal Measures crop out in the east, where the district includes part of the South Staffordshire Coalfield, and in the west, where the Wyre Forest Coalfield extends along the Severn valley. The Productive Coal Measures contain many seams of coal, ironstone and fireclay that have been worked such as the Thick, Ten Yard and the Stourbridge Old Mine Clay The outcrops of Upper Coal Measures tend to fringe the coalfields, and these rocks form part of the Barren Measures. Gentle folding has caused the Halesowen and Highley Groups to rest with some degree of unconformity on the beds below. The Triassic rocks occupy the area between the two coalfields, except where the Upper Coal Measures are brought up by the anticline. They are represented by all three divisions of the Sherwood Sandstone Formation in the district. The Mercia Mudstone does not enter the district but is found only a short distance away, both north and south. Deposition of the Triassic rocks took place under generally arid and semiarid conditions, in a low-latitude continental interior. Most of the strata are red as a result of the diagenetic alternation to iron oxide (haematite) of detrital ferromagnesian silicates and iron bearing clay minerals. Drawing HRA3 shows the Regional Geology taken from the British Geological Survey Sheet 167, Dudley and Bridgnorth, Solid and Solid and Drift. Sherwood Sandstone Group The Mile Flat site lies within this group. The Sherwood Sandstone Group was formally introduced for the formations that comprise the arenaceous lower part of the Triassic succession throughout Britain. This sequence was subdivided into three formations renamed recently (Warrington et al 1980), which are the basis for this report. An additional formation, the Quartzite Breccia, which locally underlies the Kidderminster Formation and is therefore included as follows:

Page 5: F G DAVIS & SONS (CONTRACTORS) LTD

SUBDIVISIONS OF THE SHERWOOD SANDSTONE Hull 1869 Warrington 1980 Lower Keuper Sandstone Bromsgrove Sandstone Upper Mottled Sandstone Wildmoor Sandstone Bunter Pebble Beds Kidderminster Formation Lower Mottled Sandstone Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation Deposition of the Sherwood Sandstone Group was controlled by Palaeoglacial changes initiated during the Permian. A series of troughs and ridges were formed, orientated roughly north-south in response to east west tensional stresses in the region of the North Atlantic. Such troughs include the Stafford and Worcester Basins. Broadly speaking, the Triassic rocks form part of a great syncline separating the older strata of Shropshire from those of the South Staffordshire Coldfield. The dip of the Triassic rocks is predominantly eastwards over the whole district. The Sherwood Sandstone Group is about 200m thick. The main local outcrops of the formation relevant to the site are Barr Beacon and Cannock Chase to the north and Kinver Edge to the south. Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation This name was introduced (Warrington et al, 1980) for beds formerly termed Bunter Pebble Beds. In the district relevant to the site, the sequence of fluvial sandstones and conglomerates crops out at Kinver Edge and Bridgnorth. The Sandstone is generally brick-red in colour, ranging to reddish –brown or buff with irregular blotches of streaks of greenish colour. It exhibits “false bedding”. The district is devoid of pebbles unlike the Redditch area. The thickness of the Bridgnorth Sandstone varies from 200 metres at Bridgnorth, to over 270 metres at Kinver. No fossils have been found in the Kidderminster Formation within the district. Kidderminster Formation The Kidderminster Formation previously known as the Bunter Pebble Beds are up to 100m thick and due to repetition of strike faults its crops in three principle areas. The central one with an escarpment extending from Abbot’s Castle Hill to the neighbourhood of Wolverley. The eastern outcrop is more broken but includes an escarpment in and to the north of Himley Park, and another from Ridgewell Wood, near Kingswinford, to Bunker’s Hill. The western outcrop is that the Bridgnorth area. As a whole the formation is composed of sandstones and pebbly sandstones.

Wildmoor Sandstone The name Wildmoor Sandstone was introduced for beds formerly termed Upper Mottled Sandstone. The Wildmoor Sandstone is dominated by remarkably uniform, very weakly cemented, fine grained, silty, micaceous sandstone. The formation includes upward fining rhythms which commence with a medium to coarse grained or pebbly sandstone and pass upwards through cross-bedded, fine grained sandstones into plainer bedded fine-grained sandstones and mudstones. The Wildmoor Sandstone rests conformably upon the Kidderminster Formation from which it is distinguished by its fine grain and foxy red colouration. The depth ranges from 150 metres to the north of the district to 60 metres in thickness in the south. Bromsgrove Sandstone The Bromsgrove Sandstone outcrop is divided as a result of the folding and faulting, into four principal area. The basal beds consist of coarse pebbly sandstones and lenses. The majority of the pebbles are quartz and quartzite, but limestone pebbles are common in the western exposure. Structure

The site sits between two structural areas; the South Staffordshire Coalfield to the east and Old Red Sandstone to the west separated by the Enville Fault to the west and the Stapenhill Fault to the east. Superficial Deposits

Upon all the solid formations lie superficial deposits of clay, sand and gravel. Glacial deposits, consisting of boulder clay and sand and gravel that often form mounds and ridges, are from the invasion of ice sheet from the Irish Basin. Along the river are terraces of gravel, carried down as melt waters of the ice sheet.

4. LOCAL GEOLOGY

The proposed quarry at Mile Flat is located in the Kidderminster Formation and borders the Wildmoor Sandstone along its northern working limit overlain by the Holt Health Member superficial deposits. Kidderminster Formation in this area is described as have non calcareous conglomerate. A borehole drilled 100 metres south of Ashwood, the lowest beds of the formation consist of in descending order : micaceous dull red sandstone, 4.74m; conglomerate, 7.48m; dull red sandstone 1m, conglomerate, 4.92m. The strata dips easterly at shallow angles of between 2º and 3º. The Local geology is also presented at Figure 2 for reference below.

The sand on site is dense red sandstone of a consistent nature, with inter-bedded low permeability mudstone horizons exposed in the old workings. The base of the Wildmoor Sandstone consists of a lower section of marl followed by a sand rock, very uniform with limited false bedding. This face is likely to be exposed along the north working face of the proposed quarry. Figure 2: Solid geology

The site is covered with superficial deposits of Holt Heath Member. These are sands and gravels and are fluvio-glacial deposits, derived from waters of the melting ice sheet. The sands show typically false bedding and have been exposed in trial pits across the site. The superficial geological map is presented at Figure 3 Figure 3: Superficial geology

5. SITE INVESTIGATION Trial Pits

Trial pits were undertaken by use of a JCB 3CX backhoe loader digger to a maximum depth of 3.0 metres into the superficial deposits. The trial pits were left open for detailed logging. The locations of the trial pits were designed to allow maximum coverage of superficial deposits on site and to assess the variability and range of materials across the site and at differing elevations. Samples were collected from 8 of the nine trial pits. All material samples were taken in accordance BS: 5930: 1999 Code of Practice for Site Investigations. All samples were given a unique reference and placed in sealed sample bags before removal to the approved analysis laboratory and for specific testing by Enviroarm Ltd personnel. The samples were submitted to Test Houses UKAS accredited aggregates testing laboratory in Ettingshall, Wolverhampton. A copy of the UKAS certification is presented at Appendix B. The nine trial pits were logged and the trial pit logs are presented at Appendix c. Plate 1: View of Trial Pit 6 returns showing colouration changes

Trial Pit Tests

Each of the nine trial pits was photographed and logged. Samples were taken from eight of the nine trial pits. A record of the sampling undertaken is set out in Table 1 and Table 2 below.

6. MINERAL QULAITY ASSESSMENT

General The sands and gravels have many specific uses. The primary uses of sand are in mortars and concretes and as engineering fill and as general fill. The term mortar in the building industry is used to denote a mixture of natural sand or other fine aggregate and some binding agent, used as a jointing or as a surface rendering material. Mortars are commonly used for the bedding and jointing of building such as bricks and masonary blocks and also for surface finishers. Rendering is a term used for external finishes and floor screed refers to types of regularised floor surfaces to which a finishing coat may be applied. Natural sand as defined in BS882 forms the greater proportion of fine aggregates used for mortars, their sources in the UK ranging from Permian to Recent. The sands are predominantly quartoze in composition. They are often used in their natural form or processed by screening and or washing and classifying. Building mortars are composed principally of sand, lime, cement air and water. Sand is the major constituent, and so any variations in its quality will have considerable effect on the o properties of the resulting mortar Concrete is a construction material made by mixing cement, sand, aggregate and water and hardens to a stonelike mass. The essential requirements for aggregates for concrete are that they remain stable within the concrete for its design life and in the particular environment used. Three quarters of the volume of concrete is occupied by aggregate. This is a mix of coarse to fine aggregates with varying mixtures of sand to provide different types of concrete form different construction contracts. Gradings

In considering the quality of sands BS1200 indicates that’s sands shall consist

of natural sand etc. They shall be hard, durable, clean and free from adherent coatings, such as clay

Sampling and testing of fine aggregates are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate sections of BS EN 933-1, formerly BS812.Gradings of sands for particular use are determined by sieve analysis. As the sand proportion of mortar generally forms a large part of the total volume of mix and its characteristics will influence the performance and properties of fresh or hardened mortars in many ways. The most influential factors are the shape and grading. Currently specifications for building sands in the UK are set within BS EN 13139:2002 for aggregates in mortar and BS EN 12620 aggregates for concrete.

Findings Each trial pit showed vertical variation in percentage of gravel and in some cases absence of gravel and different colours. Plate 1 shows typical colour variation and Plate 2 presented below shows distinct banding of sand and gravel deposits above sand deposits. Plate 2: Vertical variability of mineral composition at Trial Pit 4

The gradings are presented at Appendix C. This represents typical range of material in the superficial deposits. The bedrock geology as reported at Appendix D shows presence of Sherwood Sandstone. This has been used for building sands, mortar sands and as moulding sands for a long time in the Staffordshire and Worcestershire region. The types of fine aggregates available on site are based on gradings are: Fine Aggregates

• Sands for general purpose mortars • Ideal grade sands for general mortars • Sands for external renderings and floor screeds • Sands for floor screeds • Sands for concrete

Coarse Aggregates BS882 for concrete

• 20/40mm • 10/20mm • 4/10mm • 20/5mm

8. CONCLUSIONS

The development footprint has a wide range of coarse and fine aggregates ranging from cobbles to fine sands within the superficial deposits. The superficial deposits have a number of areas tested that are classified as ‘ideal’ grade for general purpose mortar, external render and screed mortars. The bedrock Sherwood Sandstone tends to be of a more consistent nature and has more narrow range of uses, even so it is useful as engineered fill, concrete sand and moulding sands. Due to the variability of the material over relatively short distances both horizontally and vertically it is essential to maximise the working footprint of each phase to enable sufficient feed source to allow for sufficient product stockpile to be produced. The full range of aggregates are available above the water table. No other working site within South Staffordshire has ability to provide as wide a range of marketable sands and gravels as the Mile Flat development from a single site.
