Because of your continued and enthusiasticsupport, 2013 was a year filled with the kindof new initiatives we believe will position usfor future growth and success. After two years of construction, we were proud to joinArchivist David Ferriero in celebrating theopening of the David M. Rubenstein Galleryand its permanent “Records of Rights”exhibition in December. Visitors now enter a

bright and welcoming Orientation Plaza, learn another dimension ofthe American journey of civil rights, women’s rights, and immigration,and can shop in our expanded myArchives Store.

In particular, we thank David Rubenstein, a passionate champion ofthe Archives, whose $13.5 million donation to the Foundation andwhose loan of Magna Carta made possible this interactive andengaging new exhibition space.

We also thank Ancestry.com for its support of the myArchives Storeexpansion, and the Philip L. Graham Fund for its generouscontribution to the store in honor of Foundation Board ViceChairman Patrick Butler.

Our November Records of Achievement Award gala—honoringdirector Steven Spielberg and his dedication to the historical recordthrough such films as Lincoln, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List,The Color Purple, and Amistad—surely ranks as one of theFoundation’s most spectacular milestones. To ensure the continuation of this momentum, we welcomed Patrick M. What an EXTRAORDINARY year!

Starting with a moving New Year’s Eve celebration commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the NationalArchives Museum ended 2012 and rang in 2013 by welcoming more than 9,000 visitors who stood in line for a rare chance

to view the original document. This historic celebration – and theyear that followed – demonstrated the best of the public-private relationship between the National Archives and Records Administration and the Foundation for the National Archives.

The opening of the new myArchives Store in late 2012 affordedgrand space to better display the variety of products available, and the unveiling of the new Visitor Orientation Plaza in 2013transformed the notion of a visit to the National Archives Museumfrom the moment you walk through the Constitution Avenueentrance. An open and graphically interesting lobby now gives thevisitor a direct sight line into the new David M. Rubenstein Galleryand our latest permanent exhibit—“Records of Rights”—with itsMagna Carta centerpiece.

Our wonderful Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery served as the showcasefor two important exhibits, one celebrating the records of ourcountry and one celebrating the talents of our conservation staff.“Searching for the Seventies: The DOCUMERICA PhotographyProject” featured Environmental Protection Agency images of life inAmerica during the early ’70s. “Discovery and Recovery: PreservingIraqi Jewish Heritage” documented the work of the NationalArchives’ preservation staff to rescue and restore some 2,700books and tens of thousands of Jewish historical documents foundby American soldiers in the water-filled basement of SaddamHussein’s intelligence headquarters in Baghdad.

One more highlight of the year: presenting the Records ofAchievement Award to filmmaker Steven Spielberg! Spielberg’scareer of retelling history through his films was meaningfullydemonstrated this year with the release of Lincoln and his use ofthe records of the National Archives to get the story right. It is notoften that a member of our staff, in this case, Kate Mollan, getssingled out in the credits of a major motion picture!

Can it get any better? You bet! The partnership between theFoundation for the National Archives and the National Archives gets stronger every year. The Foundation was proud to workwith its partners at the NationalArchives Museum to significantlyexpand the museum’s permanentexhibition space in 2013 with theopening of the new David M.Rubenstein Gallery and its “Records of Rights” exhibition at the NationalArchives Building in Washington, DC.

The project, which also included theopening of a new Visitor OrientationPlaza at the entrance to the museum,as well as the expansion of themyArchives Store, was made possiblein part by a $13.5 million gift to theFoundation from businessman andphilanthropist David M. Rubenstein.

Mr. Rubenstein, a Baltimore nativewho is co-founder and co-CEO of TheCarlyle Group, is a generous supporterof the Foundation and a champion of

the Archives’ mission. He has loanedthe National Archives Museum a Stone copperplate engraving of theDeclaration of Independence, which ison display in the museum’s “PublicVaults” exhibition, and his rare copy ofthe 1297 Magna Carta, now featuredin “Records of Rights.”

Magna Carta, the first English charterto directly challenge the monarch’sauthority, served as a precedent for

the concept of freedom under lawenvisioned by the Founding Fathers,and set in motion the process ofdefining individual rights and civilliberties for all Americans.

The new exhibit, which opened inDecember, uses original documents,photographs, facsimiles, and videosfrom the Archives’ collection to explorehow Americans have worked to realizetheir rights in our democracy and howthey continue to debate issues suchas citizenship, free speech, votingrights, and equal opportunity. Theexhibit showcases the drive for civilrights for African Americans, women,and immigrants, and includes a 17-foot-long touch-screen interactivetable where visitors can explore morethan 300 additional records from theArchives collection, react to them, and share them with other visitors.

A complementary website,recordsofrights.org, allows the publicto access the database from theirhome computers and experience theexhibition beyond the gallery walls.

In addition to supporting the creationof the gallery and “Records of Rights”exhibit, the Foundation joined theArchives’ efforts to invite the public tobecome “citizen curators” through anonline vote to help choose an originaldocument to be featured in the gallery.The winning record was the 1868 jointresolution proposing the 14thAmendment to the states, whichestablished the principle of “equalprotection of the laws” and grantedcitizenship to “all persons born ornaturalized in the United States.”Foundation Board Vice President Cokie Roberts joined Deputy Archivistof the United States Debra Wall inunveiling the document during theArchives’ first “Tweet Up,” invitingparticipants to spread the word aboutthe exhibit on social media.

ORIENTATION PLAZA The new Orientation Plaza leading tothe Rubenstein Gallery now serves asa gathering place for museum visitors,who can begin their visit in the gallery,then continue to the exhibitions on thesecond floor—including the Rotunda,the “Public Vaults,” and the LawrenceF. O’Brien Gallery—as well as to theBoeing Learning Center and theWilliam G. McGowan Theater. Theceiling of the Orientation Plazaincludes a trompe l’oeil painting of theArchives Rotunda, giving the illusion oflooking directly up into the room thatholds the original Declaration ofIndependence, the U.S. Constitution,and the Bill of Rights. The OrientationPlaza also features a short film oneight video screens that tells the storyof the National Archives’ mission,collection, locations, and activities.

The National Archives Museum took anew look at the 1970s through thelens of the federal DOCUMERICAphotography project created by theEnvironmental Protection Agency.Drawing on the National Archives’extensive photographic holdings, theexhibit proved that the ’70s producednot only leisure suits, streaking, anddisco, but also profound changes inour politics, society, environment, andeconomy. Photographers working onthe project captured the era’s trends,fashions, problems, and achievements,creating a fascinating portrait ofAmerica from 1972 through 1977.

In the spring of 2003, just days afterthe invasion of Baghdad, 16 Americansoldiers assigned to search for nuclear,biological, and chemical weaponsentered Saddam Hussein’s intelligencebuilding. In the basement, under fourfeet of water, they found thousands ofbooks and documents relating to theJewish community of Iraq – materialsthat had come from synagogues andJewish organizations in Baghdad.“Discovery and Recovery” featured thedramatic recovery of these records inIraq and documented the NationalArchives’ ongoing work in support ofU.S. Government efforts to preservethem for future generations. Therecords were made available online atija.archives.gov through the assistanceof the U.S. Department of State, theNational Endowment for the Humanities,and the Center for Jewish History.

Thousands began their July 4th celebration on the steps of the National Archives, where historical re-enactors read the Declaration of Independence.

The Foundation named director Steven Spielberg the recipient of its2013 Records of Achievement Awardin recognition of his film legacy, whichhas brought to life defining momentsof our nation’s history.

The Records of Achievement Award is a tribute to an individual whosework has fostered a broader nationalawareness of the history and identityof the United States through the useof original records, including thosepreserved and protected for futuregenerations by the National Archives.

Mr. Spielberg, a three-time AcademyAward® winner, was recognized for his contributions as director of suchhistorical films as Lincoln, SavingPrivate Ryan, Amistad, and

Schindler’s List. He also was honoredfor his work in creating what hasbecome the USC Shoah FoundationInstitute for Visual History andEducation, which is dedicated tomaking audio-visual interviews withsurvivors and witnesses of theHolocaust and other genocides into a compelling voice for education and action.

Mr. Spielberg received the award at the Foundation’s annual Gala at the National Archives Building inWashington, DC, on November 19—the 150th anniversary of PresidentLincoln’s Gettysburg Address.Documentary filmmaker andFoundation Vice President Ken Burns,a past recipient of the award, chairedthe private event.

Foundation Chair A’Lelia Bundles,Executive Director Patrick M. Madden,and Archivist of the United StatesDavid S. Ferriero presented the awardduring a formal ceremony in theNational Archives’ William G. McGowanTheater. MYARCHIVES STORE

Despite a government closure andbuilding construction, the myArchivesStore continued to expand its reach,launching a new e-store and earning a“Best for History Buffs” recommendationfrom Washingtonian magazine.

The highlight of the year was the Foundation’s launch ofmyarchivesstore.org on April 1. In nine months, the e-store generatedsignificant online business, with anaverage sale of $78.70 per order.Best-selling items throughout the year were reproductions of historicaldocuments and the Foundation-published Genealogy Tool Kit.

The store supported 58 book events incollaboration with the Archives’ publicprogramming team. A special “Eveningwith Congressman John Lewis”garnered the top-selling book event,generating sales of 182 copies of thelimited-edition EmancipationProclamation book, published by theFoundation in collaboration withApplewood Books. Over the course ofthe year, the store sold 2,479 copiesof this book.

LOOKING AHEAD

We take a momentin this report tolook back andcelebrate thesuccesses of 2013.While we catch ourbreath, 2014 isupon us and

promises even more excitement as wework with our Archives partners topromote the National Archives Museumin Washington, DC, and exhibits andeducational programming nationwide.

In early 2014, the Foundation will joinArchivist David Ferriero in hosting thefirst-ever sleepover in the NationalArchives Rotunda, inviting families from around the country to unroll theirsleeping bags and spend the night next to our most treasured records, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

The History Channel’s Brad Meltzer andfellow children’s book author CokieRoberts – a vice president on theFoundation’s Board of Directors—willtalk to visitors about their favoritehistorical characters and stories asfamilies embark on treasure huntsthrough the “Public Vaults,” practicewriting with quill pens, try on historicalcostumes, and interact withimpressionists portraying AbrahamLincoln, Amelia Earhart, and PhillisWheatley. Our young guests will beentertained by a fife and drum corpsand will enjoy a movie in the William G. McGowan Theater beforeturning in for the night, and ArchivistDavid S. Ferriero and Meltzer will evenflip pancakes for them in the morning!

In March, we and our Archives partnerswill launch “Making Their Mark: StoriesThrough Signatures.” This year-longexhibition in the O’Brien Gallerypromises to shed new light on thepower of signatures contained in somany records of the National Archives

and its Presidential libraries—not onlythose on paper and parchment, butthose autographed on basketballs andsoccer jerseys, as well as the “signaturestyles” of famous Americans, includingPresidents Lyndon B. Johnson, FranklinD. Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhowerand First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedyand Michelle Obama.

This spring and summer, leading up to the 60th anniversary of the famedNewport Jazz Festival, we will work withour partners to create a series of freeprograms and concerts featuringNational Archives records related to the history of jazz music in America andexploring how this uniquely Americanart form was exported around the world.

The Foundation will continue its work in promoting the landmark “Records ofRights” exhibition in the new RubensteinGallery and its accompanying publicprograms, as well as through theexhibit’s companion websiterecordsofrights.org throughout the year.
