FH Food Truck Fridays

The food truck phenomenon is coming to Founders Hall! On select Fridays, a food truck will park outside of Founders Hall. You can buy your lunch and eat with friends while savoring new cuisines!

SEMINARS

SCRABBLE®: STRATEGIES AND FUN, Friday, May 18, 1pmRenowned Scrabble® coach, tournament director and player Cornelia Guest will share easy tips that can help you improve your game strategy for top scores. She has been running a youth Scrabble® class at the Ridgefield Library for the last 13 years, and her youth teams have won the North American School Scrabble® championship five times.

HOW WE EAT NOW: THE EVOLUTION OF FOOD SINCE 1950, Friday, May 4, 1 pmFrom jelly molds to kombucha, American eating habits have long been impressionable and paradoxical. Food writer Judith Hausman will discuss how and why our nation’s changes show up on our plates. How did wartime, industrialization and the suburbs set our tables? When did the cuisine of immigrants enter the mainstream? She’ll explain how science and technology have both seasoned and diminished our diet. Bring your own food memories to share.

Our first food truck features Southern cuisine with a flair. Feast on fried pickles, buttermilk biscuits, fried chicken & pulled pork paired with their famous sauces. As Chef Carey Favreau says, “Where there’s smoke, there’s flavor!”

Favreau recently won the Food Fight II Culinary Battle, held at Ergo Chef in Danbury.

DEVELOPMENT

Spring for Things

Thanks to all who contributed to April’s Spring for Things. You’ve helped ease costs

for day-to-day expenses such as coffee and copying.

Because of your care and support, Founders Hall will bloom with great programs, classes and fellowship. Thank you for tending this very special garden.

ANTIQUE APPRAISAL DAY

What a fun and fascinating event! Jack DeStories of Fairfield Auction evaluated

99 items for almost 38 people who brought in their treasures.

Together, they raised $500 for life-long learning at Founders Hall.

GOLD SALEWednesday, May 16

noon - 4 pm

An appraiser from American Gold & Diamond Buyers will be here to evaluate

your unwanted gold, silver and diamond jewelry and watches, and then offer you a price based on current market values. If you sell, you will receive cash; Founders Hall will receive a portion of the total proceeds. Please bring valid identification.

A Tax-Favorable Way to Give

If you are age 70-1/2 or older and have a traditional IRA, you are required to take

a minimum distribution each year, which is subject to income tax.

A provision of the tax law allows you to transfer a charitable contribution directly from the IRA to Founders Hall without paying any income tax on that distribution. This is called a ‘qualified charitable distribution’ or QDC, and could mean tax savings for you.

Please check with your financial advisor for details.

Bobbie linked her legacy with Founders Hall. Will you?

Bobbie Schneider was known for tending both flowers and friendships at Founders Hall. She cherished this caring community so much that she wanted to ensure it for future generations.

Life-long learning at Founders Hall is now part of Bobbie’s legacy. Why not make it part of yours?

Join Founders Circle. See Cindy Nesbitt for details.

Battle FAQs1. Who is the Battle for? You! As a member, you directly benefit from the proceeds. The only way Founders Hall can continue to operate with no membership fee, extremely low class fees and numerous free events is through philanthropy, which includes events like this. Your support is critical for its success.

2. Why are the tickets so expensive? The Battle is a fund-raising event. Because it offers so much entertainment, food and drink, it is costly to put on. That’s why just $25 of a $100 ticket is considered to be a donation.

3. Why go when we don’t get to eat the chefs’ food? You do! You’ll taste special appetizers the chefs create that feature a required ingredient, and you’ll get to vote on your favorite. You’ll also be served signature desserts from all three chefs. What’s more, an open bar and delicious hors d’oeuvres are available throughout the event. Those hors d’oeuvres feature the secret ingredients the chefs will be using in the Battle. Additionally, special vendors will be giving out samples of their gourmet foods.

4. Why can’t we taste the entrée?In just 60 minutes, the chefs can prepare only enough entrees to split among 24 people. That’s why tickets for the entrée tasting sell for $500. To feed the rest of the crowd, the chefs make their special appetizers and desserts, as noted above.

5. What else is there to do at the Battle?Immerse yourself in this epic culinary showdown. Vote for your favorite appetizer. Cheer the chefs on as they battle to create a winning entrée. Learn from the chefs as you study their techniques. Join the countdown before the clock runs out. Party with other foodies and FH fans. Hear from the judges, culinary stars in their own right. Most important of all, support all of the dynamic programs that you enjoy at Founders Hall.

6. Can I sit down? There will be chairs available. But, there will be so much action, you probably won’t want to sit for long!
