Friday, Nov0 9« Closing date for 19th Water Color Exhibition,

The Scarab-Alliance Franjaise party last Saturday night should beclassified as a huge successe 7Twas a whing dinger says Scarab SeamanBeeman0 There was a capacity crowd of l65«> There were more Left-Bankerspresent than there are Left-bankers on the Left-bank,

This was a real French affair - French posters, French decorations, beretsby the score, smocks in abundance, Long-stemmed cigarette holders, lots ofheavy eye shadow, high hair do7s, some long tresses, a few natty wigs, aprevalence of black gowns, scads of black stockings housing handsomelyturned extremities, more sweaters and a better variety than has JaneMansfield, numerous sloppy-Joe sweaters and baggy pants on the men, Longbeards aplenty, an authentic Apache dance, and some folk singing engenderedby a left bank guitarist and a bohemian vocalist, terminating of coursewith the memorable Alluette,

There was a prize given to the winner with the best sketch of a ballerina-costumed model and a characteristic auction of some paintings, Costume-wise,it would seem skipper Bill Bostick and Mrs, Bostick took the blue ribbon, while Eva Beeman, Ann Raskins and Edith Cooper were runners-up with theirApache skirts, where you were forced to take a second gander, just toascertain if your vision was 20-20 in the first glance,

Graham Cookson looked natural behind the bar, pipe and all; Scotty BruceMacDonald with facial decorations which would incite his native heelandersto riot, was custodian of the wine cellar, while wife Tina, perched in the

cashier^s cage, sold fictional francs until"the till was depleted.Everybody was gay, the dinner was excellent, and the music was grand. You - you - you, who didn*t come, missed a real Scarab ball.

Another successful affair in which a few Scarabs were involved was thecocktail party sponsored by the Detroit Chapter of the American Instituteof Architects on Sept. 22« Around 150 architects and their wives enjoyedchampagne refreshment before going to the Institute of Arts for a luncheonmeeting of the Chapter's Allied Arts Committee0 Many of the architectshad never been in The Scarab Club before and were fascinated by thedistinctive architecture, both inside and out0

The new chef, Pearl Littles, has been putting on some tasty and wellselected culinary concoctions for lunch this past month0 Better stop byfor that refreshing pause some noonday, and catch up on the Scarabcomradeship•

Charlie Relinks picture of President Kennedy, taken in the rain while hewas campaigning in Detroit last September, and which hung in the diningroom last May, has been requisitioned by wife Jacqueline for the WhiteHouse collectione Congratulations to you Charliee A new slogan -from Scarab Club to White House.

Clipped from an art publications f?Most regretfully we report the recentdeath of JofciB. Woodruff, 86, dean of the commercial artists in this area. One of the first automotive artists, he made the initial drawings for thefirst Dodge, Pontiac and Buick cars advertizede He worked chiefly as afree-lance artist, and was known for both his fashion and industrialdesigning. More recently he has done religious pictures and was acknow-ledged to be a great art teacher". Adios, to another noted Scarab.

Three new members joined our ranks this past month, young men which theclub needs for leadership a few years hence. They ares

Jerome E. Sikorski, 1040 Iroquois. A student at Arts andCrafts, enrolled in interior designing.

0« William Rosevear, 152? Cliffwood Road, Bloomfield Hills.A student at Lewis Art School, Ann Arbor.

Michael J. Sorenson, 7039 East Canfield* A student at theFamous Art School.

The photographers have themselves organized anew, and are beginning whatis expected to be an active year. Charlie Amman is the new bossman,Al Bretsch, his first lieutenant, Ted Amos will keep the records andtote the money to the bank, Dick Beeman is the model director and Joe Pryis the prospective print director. A photographic dinner is being plannedfor late October9 to which all Scarabs are invited. The first print nightwill be November 6. There has been the feeling that the photographic groupis a closed membership. This is not true0 As in the sketch class, anyScarab may participate. Any Scarab who has a camera and wants to'hobnobwith other shutterbugs is invited to the Tuesday evening sessions, fromeight to ten p.m.

The Cy Coopers have just returned from a vacation at Colorado Springs,Colorado, where they availed themselves of the very scenic ride fromDurango to Silverton, on the last of the narrow gauge railways* Smokeand soot aplenty, Edie says, but scenic beyond description; the Bosticksare off to Spain this month of October touring with the Archives ofAmerican Art group; Detroit Yacht Clubbers in our group must go to thePelican's luncheon on October 12 to hear Beaver Edwards7 talk on"Beyond the Realm of Plastic Surgery"; the-pictures presently in thedining room are from Al Bretsch's dark room, even the one where histongue is sticking out at you; the pictures in the lounge are fromnumerous Scarab mambers; you should see the exhibition in the gallery bythe Progressive Art Club, a well balanced show with something to suitall tastes; Tom Walker is off on a bear hunt, some 200 miles north ofthe Soo; Max Gerger and family roamed the shores and dunes of Lake Michiganfrom Muskegon to Petoskey on their summer holiday; Al Apel back from Quebeclooking fit as a youngster; Topinski is on a flying trip to Gloucester;Treasurer Pike is now hospitalized and recovering from an emergencyoperation a few days ago; Max and Elsa Colter, long time members of theClub in the past, were at the opening of the Progressive Artists Clubexhibition; and finally, did you know that the comic dictionary definesmodern art as a popular style of painting which is abstract, abstruseand absurd.

THE SCARAB CLUBOF DETROIT

Dear Fellow-Scarabs October 1, 1962

Walter McBride has told you something about the marvelous LeftwBank Party wepresented in cooperation with the Alliance Francaise <> I would just like to addmy appreciation on behalf of the Club for the great efforts that many peoplecontributed to make this party a grand success.

Bernard Walker, President of the Alliance and also a Scarab member, was most generouswith time, effort and works of art. Most masterpieces in the auction were from hispersonal collection, as were most of the sketching and costume prizes. The gorgeousfull-size French doll was his personal handiwork down to the most minute detail. He solicited the two gendarmes and the posters from Air France, and his display peoplefrom B. Siegel Company erected the canopy over the dining room door. Donat Gauthierof the Alliance selected our wines and Ginette Stuart helped to entertain the guestswith French songs in real chanteuse style. Many other Alliance members, too numerousto mention, also assisted with putting up decorations, advising us on cuisine andespecially in selling tickets to their friends.

Joe Franz performed his usual indispensable services in making up signs that wouldhave fooled collectors of Toulouse-Lautrec. He and Ken Tigges dug up old Scarabball decorations which added enormously to the basement bar. Leon Haskin lookedafter the sketching project and helped jury the winners of this contest as'well asthe costume awards. Generous contributors to the auction were: Hank Weber, with afine nude photograph, Chris Andras gave a charming little water color, Ed Gurchecontributed an impressionistic nude drawing and Joe Franz a handsome water color still-life. Lester Arwin gave us a beautiful color lithograph by Clave. Jack Lewis gave apaint box for one of the sketching prizes.

Much of the credit for the success of the party can go to Ernest Junker and his hard-working staff, most of whom were handling a party of this size for the first time.Ernie had everything beautifully organized and many people remarked on the smoothnessof the service and the excellent taste of the food. Bouquets also go to our cook,Pearl Littles and to Bruce and Tina MacDonald who helped with the wine and moneysales. As usual, Graham Cookson aided at the bar and elsewhere. Many other Scarabshelped as well*

We are taking steps to invite a few women who are outstanding in either"the practiceor patronage o art to join the Club. If you have any names to suggest, could youturn them in to Mr. Junker for consideration by the Membership Committee? Some ofthe prospects will be joining us for lunch during October so let's extend the usualfriendly Scarab Fellowship!

Cordially,

William A. BostickPresident
