Brouilette at Scarab ClubThe few Scarabs who braved one of Michigan's late

winter snowstorms were treated to a painting seminar andslide presentation by one of America's top watercolorists.

Al Brouillette (pronounced Bree-ette), brought someimpressive credentials with him from his home in Dallas. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, theNational Watercolor Society, and was recently elected tothe National Academy of Art. He was also selected as oneof the judges for the 1983 American Watercolor SocietyShow.

Along with slides of his work ranging from charcoalsketches to finished paintings, Al, an entertaining speaker, made comments concerning his design philosophy as well asgiving practical painting tips. He uses acrylic water- ,colors both in transparent and opaque style, depending onhis painting surface which varied from 300 Ib. cold pressD'Arches to rice paper mounted on illustration board, andgesso covered masonite. Brouillette uses a combination of^ gloss medium and \r to give a semi-gloss surface tohis work.

Scarab Chris Unwin sponsored Mr. Brouillette in aweek-long painting session conducted at the Ford Fairlanemansion in Dearborn.

If the membership is interested in repeating theseseminars, please tell a Board member or call Brian Smith.

the 3vanston Art Center in Evanston, Illinois. The prizeis accompanied by a cash award.

Thought for the day.."The great thing about painting is that you don't_

have to listen to it, and the great thing about music isthat you don't have to look at it."

Antal Dorati at beam signing, May 2, 1980

Hemingway & Maniscaico Teach SchoolFebruary 1? was named "Fine Arts Day" by the West

Bloomfield School District. Music, visual arts, and craftswere emphasized by recruiting professional artists, craft-persons and musicians to act as teacher/consultant for oneday.

Scarabs George Hemingway and Joe Maniscaico were classinstructors. Maniscaico gave a demonstration of portraitpainting in oils, and Hemingway gave a presentation of com-puter graphics on the Apple micro computer. Both classeswere well attended and had television and newspaper cover-age.

Joe I/Ianiscalco held the students spellbound as heworked his magic on a portrait of a beautiful high schoolstudent volunteer model. Near by, George Hemingway's classviewed video tapes, worked on storyboards, drew on microcomputer graphics tablets, and laughed a lot.

The artists were treated to lunch and a pizza partyprior to the evening concert which ended the day,

VERNICK DONATES COPIERRichard Vernick donated a dry copier to the club in

order to lighten the work load and the expense of printingthe many flyers and exhibition catalogs needed for everyclub activity. It has already been a great help, and ourthanks (and yours) go to Vernick for getting such a wonder-ful idea.

SHORT NOTES...JERRY CROWLEY, our marine artist, was interviewed on TV byIrv Steiner, but it was on a cable network, so the editormissed the whole thing. Maybe Jerry will run through theprogram for his many Scarab friends...

KEN LOCKWOOD was the main topic in Jim Fitzgerald's FreePress column on February 25. It seems Ken did a paintingof Jim's sister, Terrible Jean, which was shown at Ken'sexhibit at the Farmington Community Library In February.Good coverage, Ken, of a fine show.

SHIRLEY HATHAWAY showed her fine watercolors at MacombCommunity College from March 5 through 18. Detroit FocusQuarterly reported this exhibit, but the editor didn'tknow of it ahead of time. For shame, Shirley, many of yourScarab friends would have enjoyed seeing your latest works.

MARSHALL FREDERICKS and PATRICIA HILL BURNETT donated someof their work to the Brookside School Cranbrook auction.Marshall gave a bronze sculpture and Pat donated a paintingto this worthy benefit. Congratulations, Marshall and Pat!

GEORGE BOOTH is seeing to it that interested Scarabs will beable to purchase embroidered Scarab emblems in the near fu-ture. Sometimes these beautiful Scarab Club emblems haveprompted members to purchase blazers. Soon we'll all lookclassy, which may force us give up art altogether.

GEORGE HOWELL had some surgery (we call it minor, he callsit major), and he's all better now.

JOHN COPPIN had one of his paintings bought by the NationalPortrait Gallery of the Smithsonian complex in Washington. The painting is a full-length portrait of poet-critic-ec-centric Sadakichi Hartmann, who was the unnoficial Mayor ofNew York's Greenwich Village. Hartmann frequented the clubduring the 1940s. Congratulations, John I
