Obesity is a big health problem in the U.S. About 40% of adults are very overweight. Almost 19% of children are also obese.

What causes the obesity problem? There are dierent factors. To begin with, people don’t get enough exercise. People are not very active. They no longer walk to the store. Instead they order goods online or they drive to restaurants. Many adults work in oces and sit at desks. Children choose screen time over outdoor activities. They watch movies and play video games. They spend hours online. They don’t play outdoor games.

Long working hours is also a factor. Stressed workers are more likely to consume unhealthy products. When people are stressed, they also sleep badly. They then eat too much because they are tired.

The way Americans eat has also changed. People eat out a few times a week. Restaurants serve big portions, so people eat more than they need. When people eat at home, they often eat processed foods. These are quick to prepare. However, they are high in sugar, salt, and fat. Eating too many of these foods causes weight gain.
