IDENTIFY. What is the main idea of the article?

a. Think about your responsibilities and social life before choosing a course type.b. Avoid night courses if you have to work in the evening.c. Online courses are good for most types of learners.

Academic Skill: Use information in graphs and tables

Authors sometimes use graphs and tables to present information. This information supports the author’s main ideas.

Are immigrants happy to be here in the U.S.?It is not easy to leave your home. It is hardto start a new life in a new country. But more than 70% of immigrants in the U.S. say they are happy to be here.

15

For many people, it’s hard to work and go to college at the same time. It’s also dicult to find time to study if you have children to look after. There are, however, a few dierent options that may fit your schedule.

NIGHT COURSES

Night courses are held in the evening. This means people who work during the day can learn after work. Busy parents like these classes, too. It’s easier to get childcare in the evening. Evening class sizes are also usually smaller than daytime classes.

There are problems with night courses, however. If you work all day and then go to class, it can be very tiring. You also have less time to meet friends.

WEEKEND COURSES

If you don’t work on the weekend, these can help you avoid very long days of work and study.

However, like evening classes, weekend courses also mean you have less time to relax and meet friends and family.

ONLINE COURSES

These are a very popular type of course. You can take online classes anytime of the day, evening, or night. You don’t need to travel to and from the school. You also can study anywhere you like — in your own home, in a café, or on a train.

One problem with online courses is that some people like it when a teacher is present. They prefer to talk face-to-face, and to get a quick answer to a question.

WRITE ABOUT IT. Did you wear a uniform when you were in school? Do you think students should wear uniforms? Explain why or why not.

Should students / students’ wear uniforms in school? Students, parents, and teachers have diff erent opinions.

Many parents and teachers like the idea. Parents think uniforms are cheaper than regular children’s / childrens’ clothes. They also think it’s easier to get their kids / kid’s ready for school in the morning. “When I shop for my kids’ / kids clothes, I don’t have to buy expensive designer brands. And my daughter’s / daughters don’t waste so much time in the morning planning what they are going to wear,” says Ann Carter, a Greenville mom.

Teachers say that uniforms improve students’ / students behavior in class. “Wearing a uniform reminds students /

students’ that they are in school to learn and that they have to follow the school’s / schools’ rules,” says Ted Cezus, a science teacher at Greenville Middle School.

However, most students don’t like to wear uniforms. They feel that clothing is a way for people to express their personalities. “I don’t want to dress the same as all of my classmates / classmates’,” explains Tina Lynch, a student at Greenville High School. “I want to wear clothes that show who I am.” Students / Students’ disagree that a person’s / persons’ clothing changes their behavior. “You don’t act better because of what you’re wearing. You’re still the same person inside,” says Tina.
