Circulation Procedure Building/Security - Emergencies

Building Emergencies

Disasters/Emergencies (after library hours)• The Director of the Library will contact staff and inform them if they should report to

work. • Some staff may be required to assist with salvage and clean up.

Disasters/Emergencies (during library hours)Call Campus police and inform the Director (call at home after hours).

Disasters/Emergencies (after normal business hours – 5:00 P.M.)• Call the campus police.• Tell police the type of emergency and location• Campus Police calls Physical Plant personnel.

Tornadoes/HurricanesWhen severe weather is likely, turn on the weather station/weather alert radio Emergency: Tornado/Hurricane WarningAction: Call the campus police

Evacuate to the lower level of the Swilley Building ( in thetape duplication room and near LTC staff offices). Signs are posted in designated areas.

Wind/Hail StormWhen severe weather is likely, turn on the weather station/weather alert radio Emergency: Severe Weather WarningAction: Call campus police and determine if evacuation should be done

Evacuate if necessary (see Evacuation Procedures)

FireEmergency: Fire detected/Fire alarms are activatedAction: Call the campus police (they will call fire department)

Lock elevator Evacuate

Electrical or Lightening StormEmergency: Thunderstorm/Power outagesAction: Call Physical plant – VOIP phones will not likely work during a power

must use landline or cell phoneTurn computers completely offLock elevator If power goes out before locking the elevator, inform police before leaving library. They should lock the elevator when power is restored.

Gas Smell/LeakEmergency Gas leak or smell detectedAction: Call physical plant or campus police

General Evacuation Procedures1. A decision to evacuate is made after a disaster or potential disaster is identified

2. Call campus police to let them know that you are evacuating the library

3. Lock the elevator making sure that no one is trapped inside

4. Circulation staff members alert all staff in staff areas

5. Librarian gets the staff list and begins announcing that the library is to be evacuated and indicates where people should go (downstairs for tornado, outside for fire, etc.).

6. ALL staff should go around the library checking areas and insist patrons leave the library.

7. Everyone leaves the building and staff gathers at a designated place (downstairs by tape duplication room and near LTC staff offices for inside evacuation, in front of the Trustees dining room if it is an outside evacuation). The staff list is used to account for all staff members and student workers.
