Fact Sheet: LGBT Discrimination
in Higher Education Financial AidAssistance Should Be Allocated on Need, Not SexualOrientation
Crosby Burns
What you need to know:
• Through the Free Application or Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, the ederal government
provides more nancial aid or higher education than any other institution. But becauseo discriminatory laws the FAFSA treats amilies headed by two mothers or two athers
dierently than amilies headed by a mother and a ather.
• This treatment distributes higher education nancial aid in ways that sometimes hurt
and sometimes help amilies headed by same-sex couples. Either way, this means that
nancial aid is oten allocated based on sexual orientation when it should be based
solely on nancial need.
• Transgender applicants can encounter roadblocks with the FAFSA due to selective ser-
vice issues, and possibly with data mismatch with their name and gender markers. Botho these issues can result in the delay or the rejection o their application.
•Gay and transgender youth with unsupportive and hostile amilies also encounter
barriers throughout the application process that hinder their chances o receiving a
college education.
•Lawmakers and the Department o Education should take the necessary steps to level the
playing eld and make the application process more air and efcient or students, amilies,
and American taxpayers.

In some instances Isabel and Allison will counterintuitively beneit rom
