19th AOC Conference & Show Perth, Western Australia 11th to 16th September 2012 http://www.waorchids.iinet.net.au/Contacts.htm Bringing Orchids to the Conference is something that is seen as a problem for many orchid growers in other states. The Western Australian Agricultural Dept has come to the party in an effort to clear the air. Hobby growers can now get permits to bring up to 20 orchids into WA without going through the drama of having your orchids treated in your home state. They must, of course be free of insect pests and diseases and inspected on arrival at the Ag Department site in South Perth. They tell me that if you have a bit more than the 20 orchids, you can apply for a second permit to cover them. http://www.waorchids.iinet.net.au/Importing_Exporting_Orchids.htm

WHAT IS A SOFTCANE DENDROBIUM?

Most softcane dendrobiums are descended from Dendrobium

nobile . (You can tell that Dendrobium nobile is a species plant,

as found in the wild because I have typed it in italics. and the

species name starts with a lower case n.)

In the wild, it is found in the lower Himalaya and hills in India

and on the western ranges of the Malay

They cope with extreme heat and cold, a cool dry season, when

they rest, and a monsoon season with heavy rains.

Give them plenty of water in the warmer, growing seasons

from November to April. Fertilising is OK then. Decrease

water in the cooler months, just enough to keep the canes from

shrivelling, as this is their resting time. Fertilising is NOT

necessary in their resting season.

In the cooler months, many soft-cane Dendrobiums lose the

leaves from the canes of the previous growing season. DO NOT

CUT THOSE CANES OFF. These bare canes will soon produce

flowers.. They are not dead.

In any case, canes or back bulbs of many genera of orchids

provide a food reserve for their new growths.

REPOTTING

Large, overgrown plants may need to be repotted, but leave at

least 3 year’s growth on each division.

Repot after flowering is finished only in the warmer growing

season, as resting plants will not put out new roots in the cooler,

resting time.

Use a loose, well drained mix.

Do not put in too large a pot.

Stake and tie it firmly so the newly forming roots do not get

damaged by the plant moving in the pot. A tall plant may need

some stones in the bottom of the pot to stop it falling over.

Another solution is to pot it into a pot which will fit in a carry

tray (such as a tray with 8 x 140mm holes).

WHAT IS A HARD CANE DENDROBIUM?

Simply put - a hard cane dendrobium puts out

flowers on one or more flower spikes, from

the top of the cane. This cane retains its

leaves before and during and after flowering.

On the left is Den. speciosum from the

website anbg.gov.au Expect to see many

better examples, some with multiple flower

spikes on each cane , at our Spring Show

MORE SOFTCANE DENDROBIUMS (Coloured Photo Supplement for .pdf format Newsletter)

Note the masses of flowers on the previous years canes, with leafy new canes building up strength to flower

the following year.

These can be a very rewarding plant, even for a beginner. For the amount of lush flowers on them, they are

surprisingly hardy and temperature tolerant, and they don’t take up a lot of space, especially when resting.

I should like to thank Microsoft’s Employee of the Month, (He called himself Michael and claimed to be in

Melbourne), who walked me through a little problem I had with all this electronic wizardry. If you too would

like a panic button installed on your keyboard, just ring up the Microsoft service centre and ask for one...
