While we didn’t have a presence in the form of a display unlike the previous two years, I gave a talk on ‘Native Orchids of the Rockhampton Region’, and we had several specimens to show the attendees. Overall, we were very well received and of course we didn’t miss the chance to again push the conference with local councillors and many leaflets were distributed amongst the crowd. Editor’s Notes The Spring Show has been and gone and is now confined to history. What an excellent event

it was. It is hard to believe that next year’s ‘Spring Show’ will be the biggest event

Rockhampton Orchid Society has held yet, with the Sub Tropical Orchid Council ‘Rocky

Round Up’ Conference and Show taking its place. This year’s attendance was excellent and

every opportunity was taken to promote next year’s conference with many enquires made by

members of the public. There was also a lot of media interest with the event making local

television news and an excellent article in The Morning Bulletin after the Show which

showcased the forthcoming conference as an example of the opportunities to promote the

Rockhampton region. A number of local politicians and councillors also attended and the

opportunity to highlight the conference was again not lost with a pledge of further and

ongoing support coming from councillor Neil Fisher through the Rockhampton Regional

Council. The Show results are included in this Newsletter.

It may come as a surprise to many members that ROSI was a trend setter with the idea of

orchid-conferences. When reflecting on my long association with ROSI, I realised I have

served as a committee member for an unbroken 30 years in one position or another, from

1988. Some might say too long; but I am not engaging in self-aggrandisement; however, with

this level of continuity I can recall the ‘Orchid-Dalliances’ of the eighties and nineties when

presidents Greg Williams and Rod Elder were at the helm. These ‘conferences’ were always

well attended by kindred societies and enthusiastically embraced by all members of the

society. Likewise, was the last conference ‘Orchid Extravaganza’ held in the mid-nineties

with John Alexander as president; who I and other members caught up with at the Show. All

were held in a mixture of locations, some in the Leichardt Hotel and even the Custom’s

House was pressed into service on one occasion with the dinner having to be held in the

largest function room at the Rocky-Leagues Club. At this event the prize-money for

champion orchid was $1000, sponsored by The Rock Building Society and won by Beryl

Robinson from Robertson’s Orchids Woombye with a paphiopedilum.

Recently, along with a number committee members I attended the Rockhampton Regional

Council’s ‘Tropicana’ at the Botanic Gardens. The RRC have really got on board with all

things ‘gardening’ and ‘sustainability’. This was the third event; and I am happy to say that it

has improved each year. While we didn’t have a presence in the form of a display unlike the

previous two years, I gave a talk on ‘Native Orchids of the Rockhampton Region’, and we

had several specimens to show the attendees. Overall, we were very well received and of

course we didn’t miss the chance to again push the conference with local councillors and

many leaflets were distributed amongst the crowd. In addition, President Jeff Bloxsom gave a

short spiel on what orchid enthusiasts and the public can expect at the conference.

Until next month, happy growing, Jeff Glover

Growers’ Tip

Fertilizer in general is a contentious issue for

orchid growers and considering it’s the start of

growing season I thought a review of the basics

might be in order. A general rule to keep to in

mind is that you use a higher N, Nitrogen for

growth (in Spring -Summer) and a lower level N

for flowering (Autumn -Winter). An N P K ratio

is often quoted which indicates the relative

content of the main nutrients or essential

elements contained in the fertilizer. Nitrogen

(N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), Other

components such as Calcium, Iron and

Manganese may be also present. ‘Types’ of

fertilizers for orchid growers can be grouped into

three basic groups 1. Water Soluble (granular) 2.

Foliar (liquid) 3. Organic (Fish/Seaweed extracts,

Liquid) All have their devotees and many

growers use a mixture of the different types on

their plants with varying results. All genera

respond differently to fertilizer application and it

is always a balance to get flowers rather than

‘growing leaves’. Do your research there is a vast

amount on the internet. Work around more or

less Nitrogen and you shouldn’t go wrong.

R.O.S.I Growers Group Report

On Saturday October 6, 43 members met at Keith and Pam Marsden’s residence in North

Rockhampton. Thanks go to Keith and Pam for inviting us. The yard was immaculate and we

had plenty of shade thanks to Keith and his helpers who erected the Club’s shades, and of

course the large tree that dominates part of the yard. There was much to see in the Orchid

house. Den. aphyllum was flowering beautifully but sadly had not been out for the show.

Later, Keith drew our attention to a large specimen of a flowering Den. keithii.

I presented a small segment about Vl. plantifolia. Our vanilla vine has begun flowering and

Trevor has been endeavouring to pollinate the flowers. The vine had been a gift from Keith

some years ago.

Keith demonstrated the repotting of soft cane dendrobiums and the removal of and potting of

keikis. There were several newish members who hopefully gained from Keith’s

demonstration.

As usual, thank you to the members who donated to the raffle table and the ever-generous

Keith handed out small soft canes after the raffle to those who didn’t win a prize. Everyone

left with a plant.

President Jeff gave a brief report on our Spring Show and thanked members for their help and

support.

Our next Grower’s Group will be held on Saturday October 27 at 2pm, at the residence

of Leone and Darryl Humble at 9 Bells Court Rosslyn, Yeppoon. Remember to bring the

usual- chairs, plate of food to share for afternoon tea and hat. This will be our last Growers

Group gathering for 2018.On the homeward journey, members are invited to drop by our

house at 16 Flinders Close, Lammermoor (if interested). We still have a lot of Phalaenopsis

flowering. If members are feeling energetic, I also recommend that they visit the Wreck Point

Look Out which is close to our place. The new viewing platform is positioned immediately

above the cliff face. Worth a look!

Species of the Month The species of the month is Den. lindleyi known by many

older growers by its synonym, Dendrobium aggregatum.

Many plants are seen gracing the showbench at this time

of year and our recent Spring Show was no exception. It

readily grows into a major specimen. Unfortunately, like

all ‘Indian Type’ dendrobiums, the group to which it

belongs; it has a relatively short flowering period usually

around 2-3 weeks from when the first flowers open to the

last. Its masses of rich yellow-gold flowers make a

beautiful display heralding the arrival of Spring for many

Orchid enthusiasts. A lot of these plants are grown

outside in a sheltered position in dappled light such as,

under a suitable tree. Once reaching specimen size it has

a propensity to grow its own ‘basket,’ with many

growing points forming a dense mass. It is widespread across Asia, from Bhutan in the

Western Himalayan foothills through SE Asia and SW China. Many have been awarded, the

majority being cultural awards. There are two recognized varieties which are Den. lindleyi

var majus and Den. lindleyi var jenkensii, the former having larger flowers and the latter

smaller flowers and a smaller growth habit. It likes a rest over Winter, so cut back on water

and fertilizer. Overall, easy to grow and a must for your collection or garden, or even just to

impress visitors and neighbours. General Cultural Guide October/December

Judging News

Terry Dean with his Champion of Show. Paph. rothschildianum ‘Ellie’ HCC/AOC. With the Show just passed, I thought it was timely for an explanation of the judging processes considering we recently have had many new members, and also for some of those members of the society who may have a misunderstanding of the judging processes. Terry’s plant was collectively vetted for an AOC award by the Judging Panel (11 Judges, 4 Associate Judges) and as is always the case and has always been at our Shows, consideration was also given to the Reserve Champion Orchid. Likewise, as is any other ‘quality or cultural’ exhibit, such as, a third preference or Best Specimen that any judge deems worthy of nomination for Award-Assessment (not an automatic process as some mistakenly believe). However, in the case of Showbench Judging, to select the major show prizes, plants are taken from Class Champions, (refer to the schedule), the panel will also collectively then vet each nomination as to whether It will stay on the judging bench. In this Show’s case three plants remained after vetting. Votes were then taken; excluding any judge who had an interest in any of the 3 exhibits. As a result, Terry’s plant was voted by majority as Champion of the Show. The Reserve Champion was then selected by voting from the remaining two plants. After the show bench judging was completed, Terry’s plant was then also nominated by several judges as worthy to be further accessed for an Australian Orchid Council quality award. By panel consensus the award assessment proceeded and resulted in it being elevated to the higher award of Award of Merit (AM, pending). It had increased its flower count from 3 to 4 when it was awarded an HCC as Champion Orchid at the 2016 Spring Show. In addition, it was now also comparable to other plants that had received this standard of award. The Reserve Champion was also then nominated by several judges as being worthy of assessment for a quality award. However, already being an awarded mericlone meant the owners would be unable to apply their own cultivar name as in Terry’s plant’s case, which was a seedling and also as this clone Van. Pine Rivers ‘Wasana’ has previously been awarded many times, the offer was declined. It is worth noting for members not familiar with the Judging Rules and procedures, it is always remains the prerogative of the owner to have the plant assessed for an AOC quality or cultural award. For whatever reason they can accept or decline, keeping in mind that a cost currently $38.50 is incurred.

Page 8: Rockhampton Orchid Society Inc

Thanks go to Mel Wheeler, immediate past STOC Registrar who acted as the Panel Chairman (usually the job of the highest-ranking judge present, Registrar or Assistant Registrar), for the Champions’ selection and awarding processes. This is a common occurrence, as under the Australian Orchid Council rules judges who have an interest in either judging process Showbench or Award, (i.e. either own or are acting on behalf of the owner) must absent themselves from the assessment. It was necessary in this case as two plants out of the 3 selected were owned by judges. Likewise, Terry was also precluded from the Award assessment. Thanks to all judges and associates who attended and volunteered their time, (sometimes a thankless task,) and to those who travelled at their own expense, especially Mel and Judy Wheeler from Brisbane, John Hughes from Bundaberg who has supported both of our shows for many years, and our Gladstone compatriots, Frank Mollenhauer, Len Dowling, Jennifer Scott, and Richard Cornale. Thanks also those members who acted as Stewards for the Show. 36 Jeff Glover, Assistant Registrar, Northern Area Panel Sub-Tropical Orchid Council

Support from The Morning Bulletin President Jeff Bloxsom has secured support for an advertising promotion from the Morning Bulletin for the conference through the newspaper’s community support program. It will be in the form of three advertisements this year and three next year as the conference draws closer. After much toiling, our webmaster and designer ‘extraordinaire’ Bob Lakey has again come up with a beautiful poster/add which is shown below. Keep an eye out for them, the first should be in a paper sometime this month.
