Thank you all for a very successful auc-

tion; and a special thanks to Patti Lee, and

our plant donors (Frank Ariosta, Pat Free-

land, Mark Gagliotti, Nancy Gerhardt, Alan

Koch, Sergey Skoropad, Bill Stender, me,

and Tropical Orchid Farms). The net for

the auction was $1,750 which will go to-

ward our speaker program, our show and

our Holiday Party.

Now that summer is almost over our atten-

tion turns to our Holiday Party on Decem-

ber 14 and then our Show which is Janu-

ary 12-15 at Rutgers in the Douglas Cook

Student Center. Mark your calendars now

and plan to volunteer! Stay tuned for

more information on both these upcoming

events; and in the meantime, start staking

your plants for their best presentation ev-

er!

We have a Board meeting September 18,

and any member in good standing is wel-

come to attend. Please contact me for in-

formation about time, location and agen-

da. Any input for the show and/or Holiday

Party would also be most welcome, just

email me your ideas.

MAC RIVENBARK

Of Mac’s Orchids

Will Tell us About

Introduction to Philippine species Mac Rivenbark and his wife Helen opened Mac’s Or-

chids in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 2002.

They specialize in Asian species and their collection

includes over 300 Asian specialties.

Mac is a past President of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid

Society where they have been members since 1999.

Mac is a Chemical and Hygiene Specialist by profes-

sion and is a veteran of the US Marine Corps. His pas-

sion for orchids began with many fascinating trips to

the Philippines and other parts of Asia. He

was inspired to collect and grow a variety of Asian spe-

cies. Currently,

Mac’s goal is to prop-

agate these species

and to help edu-

cate and inform oth-

ers about orchid

growing.

Mac and Helen will be

bringing plants for

sale.


New Guest Policy

Starting in October, we are instituting a $5 fee for non-members after their first visit. There is no change for a first-time visitor. Members who have not paid their dues are considered returning guests. Of course, you can pay your dues right then and there and avoid the extra fee. Dinner remains at $20 for members and non-member alike (unless Hanover Manor raises the price). The $5 does not apply to our auction nights and can be suspended by the Board at any time. Thanks for your understanding.

The North Jersey Orchid Society, Inc. is a non-profit, edu-

cational organization, dedicated to the sharing of

knowledge, information and instruction concerning the

culture of orchids, their hybridization, conservation,

display, arrangement, and exhibition. We are an affili-

ated member of the American Orchid Society (AOS),

Joint Presidents Council (JPC), and Orchid Digest.

North Jersey Orchid Society, Inc. is a tax-exempt or-

ganization under Section 501(c)(3)of the Internal Rev-

enue Code.

The objectives of the Society are to promote, carry

on and aid in the development, improvement and

preservation of orchids; to disseminate information

concerning the culture, hybridization or develop-

ment of orchids; and generally to extend the

knowledge, production, use and appreciation of

orchids of any kind in any manner.

Greenhouse anyone?, continued

Another option under custom building, is to build your own out of pressure treated wood. It is long lasting, and it does not conduct heat to the outside the same way a metal frame does. With wood con-struction, it is easy to add an internal sheet of plastic in addition to double or triple wall polycarb sides, which will minimize the heat loss in winter.

Local Zoning

In NJ, hoop construction greenhouses are not con-sidered permanent structures on farms. In urban and suburban settings, check the local zoning before you make any decisions.

Location & Orientation

Ideally the greenhouse should be to the South of any other structures. 2nd best is either East or West, while North of a house is very poor location due to the shade pattern (in particu-lar in winter) - unless the proper-ty is large enough, that the greenhouse can be placed 75-100’ away from the house.

While trees can offer a beneficial shade pattern at the height of

summer, they might block needed light at other times.

The optimum orientation is on a North/South axis. This gives you the option of creating multi-ple shade zones in the greenhouse.

Second best is an East/West axis, but you will generally have to shade the entire greenhouse the same. You can of course add smaller shade cloths inside the green-house to provide heavier shade where needed.

Shade & Fixtures/Accessories

Without any external shade source, make sure that you:

A. Get the right shade cloth. In ‘greenhouse speak’ it is usually defined as % of full sunlight blocked. The 3 basic levels are:

Paphs & Phals 55-60%

Catts, Phrags & Onc 40-45%

Cym, reed stem Epis,

L anceps & Aussie Den 20-25%

B. Include adequate ventilation in the greenhouse:

B.1 Automated top vents

B.2 A combination of fans and louvered vents (to draw outside air into the

green house) in the walls.

C. To distribute the heat evenly, include one (or more) overhead fans to drive the warm air down.

D. To avoid Botrytis (dark fungal spots on the flow-ers) and improve overall plant health, make sure that you get good air circulation in the green-house. That requires multiple fans to create a circular air movement, typically one fan in each corner. In very large greenhouses, also midway along the walls.

E. Once a greenhouse is full of plants, you will gen-erally have adequate humidity. In a partially filled greenhouse, you might need a couple of tubs with water under the benches.

Long Term Operating Costs

Hoop construction is the least expensive in initial cost & installation, but you have to cover the green-house with 2 layers of new plastic every 4-6 years.

Double ($$) or triple ($$$) wall polycarb panels re-quire a metal or wooden frame. They are more ener-gy efficient, and last much longer, but not forever. A life expectancy in 10-20 year range is stated by U.S. Global Resources.

The cost of operating electrical fixtures is the same, regardless of heating choice. However, heating is your biggest cost, so here your choices are im-portant. With current energy costs, natural gas is the most economical choice, with propane & fuel oil lagging far behind.

In the ‘good old days’, coal was an option. While it required more manual labor to stoke the furnace, as the fire burned low, it provided a natural slow cooling overnight, with temperatures reaching the lowest point in the early morning hours.

From a plant habitat perspective, that gradual cool-ing approximates a natural daily temperature fluctua-tion. To mimic this, I suggest using thermostats, that allow setting multiple temperature levels, such as:

Day time : min 65F

6 PM to 3 AM : min 58F

3 AM to 7 AM min 52F
