As part of the highly successful 171 Series by Amels, M/Y Addiction was originally built in 2010 to a specified length of 54.3 meters (178 feet) and recently underwent a refit in 2015 at Monaco Marine in La Ciotat, France. After discussions with the yacht management company, Waterman Marine Consultancy and Monaco Marine, along with the owners and captain of Addiction, it was agreed that this impressively styled yacht would be repainted in ALEXSEAL premium products.

Monaco Marine is a most notable network of six different yacht service and repair yards stretched along the southern coastline of France. Their La Ciotat yard boasts handling of yachts up to 655 feet (200m) thanks to a 2,000 ton Yachtlift and two dry docks with 30 feet (9m) of depth. For the M/ Y Add ic t ion p ro jec t , Performance Yacht Painting (PYP) was chosen to handle the preparation prior to the first application of ALEXSEAL Finishing Primer 442. Before applying the ALEXSEAL finish coats, PYP applicators received hands-on technical training from the ALEXSEAL service and support team, led on this project by Serge Baccaini. “To help ensure an ideal finish, the ALEXSEAL team stayed on-site during the recoating of Addiction to support PYP for this complex project,” explained Baccaini.

With over ten years of successful product applications, ALEXSEAL® now offers what are unquestionably the best fairing and priming products in the marine market, all while working tirelessly to also produce the best topcoats available.

When selecting the right topcoat paint for a yacht, it is important to note that there is much more to consider than simply choosing what’s easiest or least expensive to apply. New England Boatworks Finishes the Rambler 88 in ALEXSEAL® Metallic SilverWhen a passionate owner commits to developing the fastest possible racing monohull in its class, you can be assured that every detail is considered to make the boat as fast and technologically superior as possible. After owner George David commissioned the Rambler 88 with Juan Yacht Design and New

England Boatworks, the team turned to ALEXSEAL for their coatings needs due to the strong reputation of the ALEXSEAL coatings system and their metallic topcoat designed specifically for the marine environment. Having previously used ALEXSEAL on a variety of projects, New England Boatworks was already familiar with the quality and application of

the products, but had never applied the ALEXSEAL metallic system, especially on a new construction project of this size or magnitude.

As one of the largest and most ambitious monohull builds of its kind, no stone was left unturned during the project’s

preparation and vendor selection. Led by General Manager Scotty Murray and applicator Craig Mello, the New England Boatworks paint team worked with owner representative Mick Harvey to perform extensive research and testing. This included coverage and weight studies as well as spraying test panels of several competing paint systems for thorough comparisons. As ALEXSEAL representative Alastair Smith recounts, “the team concluded that the ALEXSEAL system, including any use of fairing compound and primers in addition to the metallic topcoat, could be executed in

fewer steps, finer style and provide more weight savings than competing metallic paint options.” Finishing the Rambler 88’s expansive carbon fiber surfaces included the striking Anniversary Silver hull with additional metallic graphics and a Kingston Gray deck. In addition, ALEXSEAL Clear Gloss Topcoat was applied directly over the carbon fiber throughout the interior and on major running gear such as the canting keel, dual rudders and the boat’s massive telescoping dagger boards. ALEXSEAL Clear Gloss was also applied on finer details such as the broad twin steering wheels and many other carbon fiber parts—all to a gorgeous result.

Designed for IRC-rated ocean racing, Rambler 88 was launched in December 2014 with the specif ic targets of participating in the 2015 Transatlantic Race as well as the Rolex Fastnet, Middle Sea and Sydney-Hobart races. She quickly took line honors in the RORC Caribbean 600 race and won the prestigious Voiles de St. Barth’s regatta before winning her class in the Transatlantic Race over her new rival maxi yacht, the 100’ Comanche. With over 5,000 nautical miles already behind her transom, Rambler 88 has been raced hard and the team couldn’t be happier with the durability, toughness and ease of repair that the hull paint has exhibited throughout some of the challenges they’ve faced.

Back in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the New England Boatworks team should be proud of their exceptional work on this highly advanced project. ALEXSEAL’s Alastair Smith adds, “Craig and the paint crew really did a great job to apply what was a fairly complex color scheme.” Up next on the docket for New England Boatworks is a slightly smaller, but similarly advanced, 63’ carbon yacht which is expected to also feature a metallic ALEXSEAL finish. With such a tight-knit and competitive offshore racing community, everyone involved looks forward to witnessing more owners and builders specifying ALEXSEAL products for these exciting classes of racing yachts.

The colors used on this Tim Heywood-designed yacht included Moon Dust on the large surfaces and Anthracite Gray on the window frames and water lines. Although multiple “shoots” or topcoat applications are still necessary—as it is in any large scale paint project—superior coverage is provided by the topcoat’s dry film thickness which is sufficient to cover and hide substrates of any color. Project manager and paint surveyor Ron Kleverlaan recounts, “The extensive and detailed preparation of the surface by the

applicators as well as the superb support from ALEXSEAL technician Thomas Grusa, in combination with an excellent product, resulted in consistently high levels of gloss, distinction of image and a superb overall finish.”

The advantages of ALEXSEAL’s coatings technologies are numerous for projects of this scale. With over ten years of field testing and use in the yachting industry, experts agree that in terms of durability and hardness, there is no system

comparable on the yacht coatings market today. Unlike competitors, ALEXSEAL Premium Topcoats provide the possibility for easy touch up and repairs of surface damage without the risk of poor blending between new and old coatings. M/Y Addiction will now enjoy a stunning and highly durable finish for years to come, and the team of applicators can enjoy the accomplishment of this flawlessly executed project.

Tender Shipyard and ALEXSEAL® Compliment the World’s Most Modern YachtsBy definition, tenders are small boats built to support larger motoryachts and are routinely used to make the connection between ship and shore for the transportation of people and goods. Modern tenders are often custom-built to the same luxurious standards as their motherships, and as the world’s superyachts have grown in size, luxury, and sophistication, so have the design and coatings of their tenders.

Since opening their doors in 2012, Tender Shipyard has manufactured over a dozen custom yacht tenders and have several new boats currently under construction. Philippe Cabon, a naval architect by trade, started Tender Shipyard and leads a team that handles all aspects of design and construction from their facility in Olonne

sur Mer on the west coast of France. Tender Shipyard’s range of models is impressive, with many composite tender designs involving an infusion of polyester or carbon fiber, and varying in size up to 40 feet (12m). Each model incorporates unique features including retractable and height adjustable hardtops, along with different power options including outboard, inboard and jet drive. One can find boats from Tender Shipyards all around the world, accompanying many impressive yachts from renowned builders such as Benetti, Heesen, Lurssen and Sunrise Yachts. From their very beginning, Tender Shipyard was looking for a finish of the highest quality possible for these runabouts; a search which led them to choose the full product range of ALEXSEAL, including primers,

fairing compounds and finish coatings. With continuing new developments in ALEXSEAL’s product lines, and expansion of our global distr ibution network, ALEXSEAL provides Tender Shipyard with the quality, advanced technology and product availability they need to compliment the most elite and stylish yachts in the world—many of which are also utilizing ALEXSEAL products.

Gunboat and ALEXSEAL® Celebrate Another Colorful AccomplishmentIt was in 2001 that Peter Johnstone embarked on a mission to make the perfect cruising catamaran, giving birth to Gunboat and the company’s first splash, Tribe. Sailors took notice and word spread, helping to take Johnstone’s passion from a single 62 foot cruising cat to a thriving business building luxurious cruising catamarans ranging in size from 48 to 90 feet. Johnstone’s latest innovation is the Gunboat G4, christened Timbalero 3 by its

owner. In close collaboration with Holland Composites, the world’s first recreational, fully-foiling catamaran with comfortable long-range cruising accommodations was launched. This 40-foot cat not only turns heads due to her rocket-like speed around the race course, but also her bold ALEXSEAL finish—a vibrant color trait she shares with many of her Gunboat sisterships.

With the 2013 America’s Cup regatta accepting new cutting edge foiling technology, it was only a matter of time before these exciting advances made their way to the private yacht sector and Gunboat was determined to help pioneer

this technology. Collaborating between Gunboat’s headquarters in North

Carolina and Holland Composites’ fac i l i t y near Amsterdam, the

team deve loped the i r own foiling catamaran design they

knew would have an instant international appeal. As a

brand of the Mankiewicz group that shares a long

h i s to r y o f p rov i d in g advanced coatings to

the aviation market, ALEXSEAL was more

than qualified, and excited, to assist on such an innovative project. The exceptionally lightweight coatings system used throughout much of the G4’s carbon fiber skin helped with the boat’s overall weight savings; a critical factor in the engineering of a foiling craft of this size.

Af ter completing construction, the Gunboat team immediately delivered Timbalero 3 to her owner just in time for the boat to participate in the 2015 Caribbean racing season. With only a few days to practice, this amazing new sailing machine was put through her paces in St Barth and Antigua prior to capturing first place in the Antigua Sailing Week in dramatic fashion. Taking second place behind Timbalero 3 was another Gunboat, the 55’ Toccata, also sporting a stunning ALEXSEAL finish. As the Gunboat legacy has grown, the fleet’s sharp lines and spectrum of bold colors have made it easy to see why ALEXSEAL has played an obvious role in the brand’s pursuit of excellence in aesthetics and performance. As founder Peter Johnstone explains, “We use ALEXSEAL coatings on the Gunboat G4 and all of our boats because it is the finest yacht paint available—period!”

reaction that targets 100% molecular cross-linkage, meaning every molecule is matched, mated and connected with another one during the curing process. Unmatched molecules can lead to a breached finish and the resulting disappointments of lost protection and beauty. Achieving 100% cross-linkage is a lofty goal and it is the primary reason polyester based polyurethanes retain gloss better than competing products. This molecular crosslinking creates a tougher finish that stands up better to real world wear and tear on a yacht. One can see this in practice in places such as longer lasting non-skid decks and resistance to damage from rubbing fenders on a hull-side.

Despite any paint’s toughness, repairs to a yacht’s surface are inevitable. Guests will bump the dinghy around; crews can make mistakes; and the habits of other boaters aren’t always predictable. When a mishap does occur to the topcoat, the initial choice in paint technologies can mean the difference between an easy, seamless repair and an unsightly frustration.

To d a y ’s a l i p h a t i c p o l y e s t e r polyurethane coatings, like ALEXSEAL, are comprised of resins in which the pigment thoroughly saturates the entire thickness of the paint film. To the contrary, traditional polyurethanes separate out into a clear surface coat, with the color or pigment underneath. When a repair is needed, these traditional coatings require buffing and sanding all the way through the clear portion of the finish in order to affect

the color beneath. This need to deeply abrade the coating during repairs can result in a prominent “halo effect,” and makes completing a seamless repair much more difficult—even for the most experienced of technicians.

While acrylic paint can be repaired like a full-pigment polyurethane, acrylics are much sof ter and do not provide the durability and resistance to harsh marine e lements tha t p r emium polyester polyurethanes can. The softness of acrylic coatings also makes them less than optimal for nonskid and other high traffic or scratch prone areas of a yacht. For instance, a soft coating often jeopardizes a satisfactory color match between a bulkhead and cockpit sole, as the areas wear at different rates. By their very nature, acrylics just don’t work very well in these circumstances. That is why experienced yachtsmen and applicators usually choose polyester polyurethane when they seek a highly durable finish. When choosing a polyurethane topcoat, there is an alternative to compromising between traditional aviation style polyester polyurethanes—which provide the hardest surface with the highest chemical resistance—and au tomot ive s t y l e acr y l i c polyurethanes—that are softer with quick drying and easy to repair

characteristics. You no longer have to choose between a hard to scratch, yet hard to repair, polyester system and an easy to repair, yet easy to scratch, acrylic based system. The choice is now clear; ALEXSEAL Yacht Coatings provides a superior solution—designed from the molecular level on up—to excel over the competition in all marine applications.

Grateful Partnership: A Long String of Spencer Yachts Feature ALEXSEAL®

Captain Paul Spencer was raised in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and began his first job as an offshore mate at the young age of 12. After several years as a captain running fishing charters and winning multiple tournaments, Spencer decided to turn his focus to building boats. Since that decision in 1996, Spencer Yachts has grown into a formidable icon throughout North America and as far away as Hawaii and South America. In 2015

they have several custom sportfish under way and have proudly begun construction on their 100th hull. Situated in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Spencer Yachts is comprised of two facilities, one located in Manns Harbor where the construction process begins for each custom cold-molded hull. From there, the primed hulls are moved to Spencer’s main facility in Wanchese for completion. These facilities provide for on-site fabrication of nearly all components of the boat including all carpentry, wood work, metal fabrication as well as painting and finishing.

The facilities at Spencer Yachts may seem modest in comparison to some production boat builders and service yards, but their efficiency and expertise cannot be questioned, especially considering their completion and delivery of nearly 100 hulls in a 19 year span. Over the last decade, Spencer Yachts has developed a strong preference for ALEXSEAL for both their new builds and refit projects. Paul Spencer confirmed, “We’ve used ALEXSEAL fairing, priming and topcoat products on the majority of our boats. We couldn’t be happier with the service and overall quality of the finish.” This includes notable

recent launches such as the stunning 87’ convertibles Bang-a-Rang and Betsy, the well-known 60’ Stream Weaver and the 69’ Gratitude, as well as many other elite sport fishing boats that can be found on the tournament trail.

Gratitude is of particular interest in that it is one of many different custom yachts originally built by Spencer for the same individual owner. The Gratitude fleet has included an outboard engine powered 37’ Express, a 60’ convertible, and their latest, a 69’ convertible, among other Spencer-built yachts. Customer loyalty such as this speaks volumes to the high quality build and functional layouts seen in all Spencer Yachts. As these boat names suggest, ALEXSEAL is likewise very thankful for the Gratitude and Spencer Yachts families for consistently wrapping their sport fishing dreams in the proven protection, performance and beauty of ALEXSEAL coatings. With Spencer’s 100th hull slated to be faired, primed and painted in ALEXSEAL products in 2016, everyone in the sportfish community is excited to watch this landmark build come together!

“We couldn’t be happier with

the service and quality.”

Mankiewicz Germany, original creators of the Alexseal brand, recently broke ground on the “Ingenieurwerk,“ or Engineering building, shining light on the company’s future growth and ongoing commitment to research, development and networking. With employee education, training and well-being in mind, this new facility will feature an environment that staff, affiliates and customers will thoroughly enjoy.

Designed and engineered by planwerk elbe GmbH, the purpose of the “Ingenieurwerk” building is not only to have a growing space for employees at Mankiewicz Germany, but also to house close affiliate companies such as UMCO Umwelt Consult GmbH, who handles all of Mankiewicz’s safety data sheets and environmental compliance. A number of close Hamburg business allies will jointly

utilize the facility’s new marketing and IT facilities, with companies in a variety of fields planning to move into these new premises. This collaborative co-working space will increase information flow between companies which will in-turn benefit customers due to the network’s synergetic effect and increased efficiency.

Some of the features generating the most buzz throughout Mankiewicz’s campus is the inclusion of a new canteen, changing rooms and shower facilities. A new lecture room will be available for events and conferences. State-of-the-art presentation technology and acoustics will harmonize the space, creating an optimum experience for all those present. Additional conference rooms will also be available for group work and meetings of varying sizes and requirements.

Completion of the “Ingenieurwerk” building is scheduled for the end of 2015 and all of Mankiewicz’s Hamburg personnel look forward to this modern office and social building. Its opening will introduce many workplace improvements including a boost in communication between colleagues and business partners, relaxation, food, modern furnishings, and state-of-the-art equipment.

American Custom Yachts (ACY), located on the Atlantic coast of Florida on the St. Lucie River, has become well known over the years for turning out beautiful custom cold-molded sportfishing boats. But that is only half the story as the ACY marine yard also tailors to a great number of repairs, repowers and refits on boats ranging from mid-size center console and sport fishing boats up to cruising yachts over 100 feet (30m) in length.

When it comes to custom construction, ACY handles every aspect in-house from the beginnings of planking the hull through to interior finishing along with coatings and paint work. When a boat visits the yard for repairs and paint jobs, ACY turns them over to one of their experts, such as Eagle Marine, located on-site. While some marine service companies try to be the jack of all trades, Eagle Marine has honed in on the specifics of fiberglass and gel coat repair along with paint repair, hull and topside repaints as well as bottom painting. This direct focus has driven the Eagle Marine team to be an expert in their field, turning out beautiful results on many boats that come through the yard.

One notable yacht that recently enjoyed a stay at the ACY yard was Melina, an iconic 1994 Bertram 60. Though based in North Palm Beach, FL, Melina and her crew are known far and wide in the competitive sportfish world, traveling the Caribbean and mid-Atlantic to fish many of the big billfish tournaments. While receiving some repairs and updates to her steering, electronics and other systems at the ACY yard, owner Wiliam Burris sought

out Bobby Heyna of Eagle Marine for a repaint. Burris explains, “I first painted Melina in 2007 with ALEXSEAL and was impressed that eight years later the paint was in good shape. I decided to refinish Melina this year because I wanted a new look, not because it needed it. I was also excited about the metallic paint chip I saw for Peppermint Blue.”

Heyna and the Eagle Marine team admittedly didn’t have much experience with ALEXSEAL or their metallic system yet, but were interested to learn how to obtain perfect results. ALEXSEAL’s Jeff Holland visited the Eagle Marine team in Stuart, Florida, helping them calibrate their spray guns and providing some helpful pointers to get the project up and running full speed. Although metallic coatings do involve a bit more complexity as compared to a typical topcoat application, once the team understood how to ideally

spray ALEXSEAL’s advanced coatings, they raved of the ease of coverage and beautiful luster. Burris offered many praises after closely examining his boat’s new shimmering topcoat, “American Custom Yachts and Eagle Marine did an amazing job in the restoration. The finer details are in the transom and toe rail painting, but the hull has not one scratch, blister, peel, etc… a perfect job. She sure is a head turner.”

In the last ten years, the majority of ALEXSEAL’s growth in the yacht coatings market has been by word of mouth and the converting of one boat owner, captain or applicator at a time. With Melina performing out on the water and the team at ACY and Eagle Marine active in the yard, ALEXSEAL’s field of trusting owners and applicators will surely continue to grow.

Mankiewicz Honored as a Top 100 Most Innovative Company in GermanyMankiewicz Germany was recently awarded during the German Company Summit in Essen for being one of the most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany. “Top 100“ mentor and famous science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar presented the Hamburg company with the “Top 100“ seal, an award which was created over 20 years ago.

Mankiewicz has two reasons for celebrating this year: Next to being awarded the “Top 100“ seal the company also celebrates its 120 year anniversary. Originally founded in 1895 as the independent subsidiary of an English paint factory, the company started out producing paint for coaches according to original English formulations. Today, more than 1,100 employees worldwide develop and sell innovative paints for high-tech sectors such as the aviation, automotive and general industry markets. Of these employees, 300 engineers work in the service sector. “Our main focus is on product development and optimization for our customers’ market needs, for example on paints with resistances which protect surfaces from corrosion and other weather influences. Our major goal lies in the long-term value maintenance of our international customers’ commodities”, says Michael Grau, Mankiewicz’s owner and managing director.

The company philosophy of the globally active paint manufacturer is clearly focussed on innovations which will benefit the customers. Investments in the area of research and development as well as a state-of-the-art production department are the foundation for the company´s success.

Being in a top innovation process with customers and their needs, Mankiewicz is also dedicated to trade associations and universities. Moreover the company at taches great impor tance to i ts employees’ professional training. Annual strategic meetings and regular innovation meetings are held in the various business sectors.

“ M a n k i e w i c z , a company with a long tradition, stands for coating concepts of the future and the implementation of marke t demands i n t o c u s to m i ze d s o l u t i o n s ” , exp la ins Michael Grau. “Flexib i l i t y, innovativeness and the imagination of our employees are the keystones for a steady and dynamic product development. The “Top 100” award is an appropriate confirmation of our actions to date and an incentive for the innovative development of our company in the future,” emphasizes Mr. Grau. The basis for being awarded the “Top 100” seal is a two-step analytic process developed by Professor Dr. Nikolaus Franke (professor for entrepreneurship and innovation) and his team at the Vienna University of Economics. The scientists analyze innovative management and success of medium-sized companies by means of more than a 100 parameters in five categories. The scientific management

alone decides who will be awarded the “Top 100” seal. In 2015 Professor Franke and his team checked more applicants than ever: of 302 applicants, 234 made it to the final. As founder of Hanse Yachts, Michael Schmidt spent over two decades building sailing yachts that broke the contemporary rules of design and luxury and set new market trends. After building the company to the position of second largest sailing yacht builder in the world, Schmidt sold his ownership in Hanse in 2011, but found he could not sit still for long. Feeling the need for something larger than his current Hanse 630, Schmidt collaborated with Italian designer Lorenzo Argento of Brenta Design and world-renowned architect Sir David Chipperfield to create the first ever Brenta 80 DC. This long-range sailing yacht has been designed to offer 3 different layouts, all with beautifully-appointed interiors that are practical and flooded with natural light.

The Brenta 80 utilizes an extensive amount of composites including carbon fiber, as Project Manager Andreas Bock states, “Carbon fiber provides a

very low displacement, more accurate control and more stability resulting in a more efficient yacht.” Efficiency was paramount throughout the build of this new design as Schmidt envisions a Brenta 80 owner embracing the cruising lifestyle

and sprinting long distances. Schmidt explains, “We are interested in efficiency, collaboration with the best suppliers and absolute satisfaction of the customer. Therefore each aspect of the product is made by people with passion for quality, by craftsmen living their dedication for building boats.” Schmidt succinctly adds, “We are bringing back the art of boatbuilding.”

It wasn’t by chance that ALEXSEAL was chosen for the Brenta 80, explains Bock, “ALEXSEAL came recommended to us by an associate. We wanted a high-quality product that would reflect our expectations, and so it was a good fit for the Brenta 80 DC.” With a 100 foot sailing yacht in development and a 42 foot day powerboat on the drawing board, ALEXSEAL looks forward to being the coatings of choice for each new masterpiece created by Michael Schmidt Yachtbau and Brenta Design.

ALEXSEAL is delighted to collaborate on this project as a supplier of a variety of coatings—from the brilliant color of the hull to the interior spaces that receive ALEXSEAL Clear Gloss over the woven carbon fiber structures. To watch the build of this breath-taking and highly modern sailing yacht is similar to witnessing an artist paint or construct their masterpiece: every detail is carefully considered, and sketched before being laid out and created, with the end result being remarkable and timeless.
