Beginning in kindergarten, Fairmont’s outstanding teachers create a homeroom environment where children master the basics of language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. Hands–on, meaningful experiences help our students understand the

world around them. Group activities facilitate development in language, fine motor, gross motor, social skills, cognitive skills, and establish reading and math readiness concepts. Teacher–directed activities ensure that all areas of development and academics are addressed.

Our dynamic, well-rounded curriculum allows students to grasp reading and writing concepts at an earlier age than peers in other schools and programs.

WHY JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN?

Junior kindergarten (JK) is for students turning five–years–old between September 2 and December 1, as well as for students who are not quite academically or developmentally ready for kindergarten.

This first year of a two–year kindergarten program marks the beginning of their elementary education. Students wear uniforms and attend a full day of school, which includes recess and lunch on the “big kid” playground, and specialty classes. The students follow a kindergarten level of the Treasures reading program, along with EnVision Math. Upon completion of junior kindergarten, students advance to kindergarten.

Junior kindergarten is offered at Fairmont’s three elementary campuses.

Character education is an integral part of Fairmont’s curriculum from preschool through high school. Our character education program is based on Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (at school), as well as the Character Counts! program.

Character Counts! is a framework centered on basic values called the ‘Six Pillars of Character.’ Each pillar is highlighted on a monthly basis, and helps instill a positive learning environment for students.

These programs help students to think about the decisions they make and prepare them for leadership roles in the 21st century by improving decision–making skills, increasing accountability, developing cognitive skills related to being just and fair with others, as well as encouraging civic duties and social responsibilities.

In Fairmont’s fun and engaging campus environment, students have the opportunity to learn and grow, not only in the classroom, but in the many extracurricular programs offered on each campus. Activities such as performing arts and competitive sports allow students to challenge themselves, while making connections and building friendships with their peers. Students are also encouraged to bond and learn together during interactive field trips! Look for our campuses on Facebook to see the fun things happening at Fairmont each day!

Honors courses are similar to regular courses, however students work at a faster pace, are introduced to additional texts, and are expected to write with a higher level of proficiency. Students are challanged with a wider variety of writing assignments and a more advanced study of vocabulary. Students are chosen for honors courses through teacher recommendations, standardized test scores, and writing proficiency assessments designed by Fairmont’s Education Department.

HONORS COURSES

Yes. Fairmont students are required to wear school uniforms purchased through True Grits uniform company.

What is the best way to communicate with teachers?

Each teacher has his/her own phone extension, as well as an email address. If you have questions regarding your child’s grade in a class or a specific question regarding class work, please contact the teacher directly. Blackboard is another great option for teacher communication. Log on at http://fairmontschools.blackboard.com

How will I know how my child is doing in a class?

Teachers regularly contact parents when a student’s grades change. Communication with parents is a priority on our campuses.

How can I check my child’s grades?

Each parent/guardian of students in 2nd grade or older will have access to

our online system, Netclassroom, which displays current grades and comments from the teachers. Netclassroom can be accessed through our website at www.fairmontschools.com.

EARLY EDUCATION

Is kindergarden a full or half-day program?

Junior kindergarten and kindergarten are both full-day programs.

of good study habits. Students in 7th-8th grade will be given nightly homework assignments Monday through Friday. Honors classes may require more.

How are students placed into classes?Placement is based on teacher recommendation, grade in the class, and placement tests in math and English. Students new to Fairmont will take placement exams through the Admissions Department.

As a general rule, no more than two tests are allowed per day at the junior high level.

Does each student receive a locker?
